every bioware animation

  • back of the head scratch
  • a character shaking their head in disbelief or disgust with hand on their forehead, looking down
  • that kiss animation used since origins and in every mass effect game where they very slowly go in, hesitate, bop their heads around, and really go in for the kiss
  • when a character, usually female, talks and puts their two hands in front of them like a robot and shakes them to illustrate their point
  • a character leans back on one leg with their arms loose
  • the exit-stage-right an NPC does after a conversation ends
  • angry limp wrist pointing
  • neck/collar bone scratch
  • a slow crossing of the arms in times of suspicion
  • that punch animation
  • drinking alcohol and violently shaking head
  • a character gives a half smile with an eyebrow raised
  • pointing behind with thumb, body turns very slightly

I can never watch a conversation again without this post following me around

I’ll just leave this here…

Bioware did one hour-long mocap session for knights of the old republic in 2003 on a budget of $3.25 and never again since.

Someone please explain!

Why doesn’t BioWare pull a Bungie and just “leave” EA’s overlord clutches? I’m assuming when games don’t perform as they should such as Mass Effect Andromeda (still a great game) and Anthem (I’m doubting it’s one of the years best) EA will pull funding and cut staff, however, Bioware still holds its own value and some form of its own income I’d assume, so why not cut ties. Start a studio somewhere and make what you want unrestricted. BioWare has a history of greatness and its strength is in singleplayer storytelling, not looter shooters. As a lifelong and committed fan, the last thing I want to see is BioWare closed due to “poor performance” according to EA’s shitty standards. I dont understand business specifics however and may not see the whole picture so can anyone explain why this hasn’t happened yet?

bungie had a publishing deal with actiblizzard but remained an independent studio, while bioware was straight up purchased by ea. i believe that the founding members of bioware quit at or shortly after the purchase was finalised (they had their payday, after all). several oldschool ex-bioware devs work together at beamdog but all they’re managed so far is rereleases of bioware’s old dnd games (bg1/2/tob, nwn1).

simple fact is that bioware has not existed as anything more than an ea brand name for well over a decade now. it sucks, but that’s the way it is.

Bioware is the company who made a canon bisexual woman only available for male shepards

Bioware is the company that had a fucking beauty contest for me3’s default femshep’s appearance

Bioware is the company that made Femshep’s unable to call Kaidan out on his shit if she romanced someone else in ME2 & he tried to pull the whole “cheated” line while Maleshep’s could instantly shut down Ashley in the same scene

Bioware is the company that made a race of sexy, blue aliens and then proceeded to slut shame them & toss any agency or respectfullness that a long-lived species could have had out the window for the male dudebro’s titillation

Bioware is the company that created a genetically engineered “perfect” woman and then had every character in the game call her bitch, slut and every name in between.

Bioware is the company that made zero mention of there even being a female Shepard until the last game of the series

Bioware is the company that made it so that FemShep was the only Shepard that had an LI die on her no matter what they did in the previous games.

Bioware is also the company that made it so one of of FemShep’s LI’s cheated on her and got another woman pregnant and then had that LI come back later and say they were going to name the baby after her & Shepard had to be totally fine with it.

Don’t you fucking dare reblog something from me about the underrepresentation & mistreatment of women in Bioware games and tell me how ” they are all for what you want” when this shit is not what I want in my video games.

some extra comments:

it takes three games to have a femshep-locked lesbian love interest, and even then she’s basically just a side character with little influence in the story. a single lesbian character in the entire series.

(the same goes for a mshep-locked gay love interest. In fact, I believe that in the entire series and all the romance options, there are two male options for mshep, including a single bisexual male character in the entire series who despite being a major character in the first game was locked to femshep, and is only mshep romanceable in the 3rd game. There are NINE bisexual romance options through the series ranging from full storylines to brief romantic/sexual encounters, and ONE of those characters is male, and only after retcon.)

should you pursue James Vega sexually in the Citadel dlc as femshep, you sexually harass and take advantage of him by stalking him as he’s getting drunk, continuously asking ‘what it would do to convince him [to sleep with you]’ and egging him on to keep drinking so his inhibitions will be lowered enough to want you. despite the fact that from the beginning of the topic being raised he’s obviously highly uncomfortable with it, and if/when you DO sleep with him, implies that he’s still uncomfortable and wants to forget it ever happened. Like, James ‘consents’ but it is borderline rape if not just outright rape, and if this was a male character/mshep doing this, you can be GUARANTEED that there would be outrage. Despite that almost any discussion on these scenes boils down to male gamers thinking that James should be super happy and pumped he got to fuck his commander and that his unhappy reaction about being coerced into sex with someone he respects and has a clear power imbalance over him is ‘weird.’

too riff of the comments about the Asari, they’re supposed to be the most politically powerful highly advanced species in the galaxy, with lifespans that can reach 1000 years, and a diverse society built on the back of culture and philosophy and politics and law. And yet despite this, the Asari are always strippers in clubs. They’re distinctly human in bodyshape, breasts, and beauty so all male gamers are safe to get their rocks off. They’re also canonically all non-binary yet this is completely and utterly ignored or really even commented on. Despite being depicted almost all the time as sexy blue pansexual chicks who will sleep with literally any race, there’s a small subset of Asari who have a genetic disorder who means that they kill those they have sex with and are also sterile, and these Asari are absolutely demonized by the game and the Asari population, and they supposedly become more powerful the more people they kill using this method, so go around seducing and murdering anybody they can get their hands on.

finally, the sentient AI onboard the ship starts out looking like this, just a floating holographic blue ball:

Yet in the third game finds herself a full robot body which just so happens to look like this:

Note the obvious colouration of her armour which implies that her breasts and ass are covered but not her cooch. Also, thigh highs?

The real reason for her getting this body is honestly just so she can become the love interest of a male character who gets the sexy robot girlfriend. Being a love interest pretty much becomes her entire character arc.

Edit: also want to add that the character who cheats on femshep and gets another woman pregnant and wants to name it after her is one of two black love interests in the series, both men, and the only black love interest available for femshep. :^)

And let’s not forget about EDI’s cameltoe, the banshees’ genitals worked into their texture maps, Miranda’s constant butt shots shoved in our face, Samara’s deep cleavage, FemShep’s increasing bust size through the games, FemShep getting a clingy plastic dress in ME3 while BroShep gets a cool leather jacket, or the number of love interests available to FemShep as opposed to BroShep (especially in ME3).

I’m looking forward to Andromeda, but I’m quite concerned that BioWare will still do this kind of stuff in that game. There were already a couple of hints of that in the trailer.

CONFESSION:

I think adding Bianca Davri to the DA universe was one of the biggest mistakes the devs made. I don’t know anyone who likes her or the way she was shoehorned in to give Varric a love interest - presumably so people would stop asking to romance him. Personally, I was happier with the idea of asexual Varric in a relationship with his crossbow, or not-asexual Varric quietly (even one-sidedly) in love with Hawke or Bethany. Any of those would have been better than what we were given.

CONFESSION:

My sister and I were very disappointed with the fact that when Cole is made human that means that he wants to hook up with ladies. Not only did this feel out of character but I didn’t think he would be on board with being in a relationship with someone in just two years. He still hadn’t gotten the hang of being human yet. And my sister, who is asexual, felt it was insulting that Bioware thought human=hooking up with people. She really liked Cole and felt like she could kind of relate to him.

The Orsino bossfight will never stop to bother me. It was an unneccessary, lorebreaking mess of character assassination, shoehorned into the game so that players who sided with the templars feel more justified, despite the game never missing out on squeezing blood magic into the narrative for some cheap “but mages can be bad, too!” arguments, because BioWare couldn’t write a proper conflict even if their lives depended on it. And when you get the option in Inquisition, to confront Varric, and by extension, BioWare with Orsino, they slap you in the face by giving you disapproval from Varric. They only included the dialogue option out of spite.

My relationship with BioWare would likely be significantly less complicated if they didn’t have this frustratingly persistent habit of learning the wrong lessons from their mistakes…

Official Word From the BioWare Team on Mass Effect: Andromeda

Since the release of Mass Effect™: Andromeda, we’ve worked hard to address feedback from our community. From improving animations to expanding customization options, we looked to respond to your concerns, and build on what you loved.

With each patch, you let us know we were heading in the right direction, and we’re grateful to everyone who joined us on this journey. We’re proud of what we created, and we hope you enjoyed it as well.

Early in development, we decided to focus Mass Effect: Andromeda’s story on the Pathfinder, the exploration of the Andromeda galaxy, and the conflict with the Archon. The game was designed to further expand on the Pathfinder’s journey through this new galaxy with story-based APEX multiplayer missions and we will continue to tell stories in the Andromeda Galaxy through our upcoming comics and novels, including the fate of the quarian ark.

Our last update, 1.10, was the final update for Mass Effect: Andromeda. There are no planned future patches for single-player or in-game story content.

In the coming weeks, our multiplayer team will provide details of their ongoing support and upcoming content, including new multiplayer missions, character kits, and what’s in store for N7 Day.

We appreciate all the millions of people who came with us to the Andromeda galaxy. We hope to see you again in the Mass Effect universe.

So the new BioWare game… exists?

It’s funny, I guess they’ve been burned by overselling their products so many times they’ve just stopped actually saying what they are.

I’ve been thinking about this since that Kotaku article about how Andromeda fell on its face. I feel like one of BioWare’s biggest issues is their inability to figure out who they are, and the lack of confidence to stand by it. One of their biggest flaws over ME’s lifespan has been the almost neurotic over-reaction to fan complaints. It’s in their entire history. Don’t like the elevator load screens? Replaced with even more boring generic graphic load screens! Economy and inventory system a bit badly designed? Get rid of all inventory! FemShep’s run isn’t ‘feminine’ (????) enough? Give her a laughably exaggerated hip-sway!

You look at a franchise like Uncharted, and see a dev who decided what they were about and stuck to it, and did it well. And granted, their gameplay didn’t exactly chart (hoho) new waters. But that didn’t matter because they decided what kind of game they wanted and they made four of them. And they weren’t flawless games, either. But they stuck to their damned guns and as a result they have a quadrology story that will be well-regarded for a long time. Meanwhile, CDR spent a lot of effort on creating an amazingly powerful cutscene animator engine for the Witcher games, and the result was a third game packed with character moments that will also stand the test of time.

Dragon Age has fared a little bit better over the years because if its pedigree as a fantasy RPG. It was able to cling to gameplay conventions that ultimately gave the whole franchise an underlying direction, even when they were having trouble finding a good line to walk between story and open world.

Mass Effect, on the other hand, spent ten years… flailing. It bleeds out of that Kotaku article. Their grasp of what made ME special was apparently so weak they spent the majority of Andromeda’s five year dev cycle on vaporware. They’re still desperate to please both the hardcore shooter set and the RPGers, for some reason. They crammed in an MP no one asked for, which, despite in itself being a decent little game, had strong and IMO negative blowback into the single player game. (I would forgive the MP if it didn’t affect SP development, but it did. A LOT.)

I can’t help but think BioWare spends a lot of time apologizing for being a storytelling dev. It’s almost embarrassed by the notion that a lot of people play for the characters and relationships rather than the video game mechanics. Its biggest problem is a decade-long identity crisis it can’t seem to resolve. And the result is Andromeda, where the strengths we know and love are grossly underserved by a mishmash of problems that evolved out of trying to be everything to everyone and never deciding who they actually are.

I’m honestly kind of tired of it. We’ll see if this new franchise manages to stake out an identity, and, I don’t know, stand up for it.

I love that Ubisoft’s response to the racist white man pain mess that was Watch Dogs was by giving WD2 a black male lead. But then when racists got angry, Ubisoft put wearable blm merch in-game, added playable buff female characters and black vikings to For Honor, diversified their roster in Rainbow Six Siege, made their newest Assassin’s Creed games take place in China and Egypt, and made Far Cry 5 be about beating up white supremacists.

Conspiracy Theory: Ubisoft Was Killed And Replaced By A Look Alike

Whatever demons Ubisoft inhabited exited into Bioware.
