He Was Tall

Marianne’s and Dawn’s respective first sights of the Bog King, to the tune of ‘He Was Tall’ from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. (Song did not make the movie version with Whoopi Goldberg in it, but is on the CD of a different troupe’s production.)

Marianne

He was tall, very tall, And his eyes were clear and blue. He was broad-shouldered, thin, And his scales a greyish hue. When he strutted across the stage He was like a vengeful god, And everyone else screamed and ran And this was when things got odd. The fireworks were shooting stars; The goblins stole the elves’ guitars; And when he leaned into my space, I drove my fist into his face! Then I was pinned back down against the floor, But somehow felt stronger than before. He was tall, very tall, And his eyes were clear and blue …

Love-Dusted Dawn

He was tall, very tall, And his eyes were clear and blue. He was slim, very slim, And his wings were narrow too. When he issued commands from his throne, He was like a thing divine, And all the goblins turned their heads, And naturally I turned mine. The chandeliers were spiked with thorns; His chin was, too; his wings were torn; His shoulders were like pinecone scales; My mind was caught by each detail; Then I was floating just above the floor, Feeling fonder than ever before … He was tall, very tall, And his eyes were clear and blue …

Last batch of Inktober drawings - only a day late to post :)

This isn’t connected to my Strange Magic Inktober drawings; it’s a Strange Magic/Labyrinth crossover illustration I did last year sometime, the sketchbook for which I promptly lost and just recently found again. 

I like how the floating chandeliers and bubbles turned out. There’s hurricane lamp-style glass around each candle so the flames won’t catch their wings or the floating drapery!

Roland’s three henchmen are really only visually distinguishable by wing colour - green, lighter green, and greenish brown.

I think the glowy cobwebs turned out pretty good here.

“Folks said I was daft to build a castle in the swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show ’em! It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp, so, I built a third one. That one burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp - but the fourth one stayed up!”

I wonder what the goblins’ next castle is going to look like.

The windows of the Fairy Castle make it look more like a jack-o-lantern ... ah, well, it is October.

This brownie is also a demonstration of why one should use references - I completely forgot about the whiskers.

This door doesn’t seem to like Roland much.

His Majesty the Fairy King - never officially named in the movie, but sometimes called ‘Dagda’ in the fandom based on an interview with the cast and crew.

For the Strange Magic Inktober days that I missed posting on the day in question.

Of the various species in this movie, I think the goblin designs are the most forgiving when doing a quick ink image.

Image captions don’t seem to be saving, so, in order, there’s Brutus, Pare, the unnamed elf couple glimpsed on the Ferris Wheel behind the Imp, the unnamed goblin who wanted to eat Dawn’s wishbone, The Flower, the moon, the Bog King, and Marianne’s handmaidens.

A very disproportionate Marianne in a very dramatic landing pose. (What appears to be her elbow on the lower arm was actually intended as her shoulder joint, but I messed up her torso positioning and got mixed up while colouring so now her intended elbow just looks like her forearm is crooked and her new upper-arm looks like foreshortening went very badly.) The markers worked out really well for colouring in this.

News from the mushrooms - one is sleeping on the job and missing out on all the gossip!

Her other foot didn’t turn out wonky, I just messed up the placement and size of the drawing and went over the page edge.

Stuff has the hardest face to draw. I kept making messing up her nose-eye spacing or making her whole face too narrow. This still doesn’t really look like her but it’s the best of the batch. (In fairness, I was drawing while out and about. I’m sure I’d have done a much better job with reference images on hand.)

I was trying to go for a ‘news from the mushrooms!’ pose but I think I made Thang look more like he needs to ... be excused for a moment.
