prompt: anonymous: “Can you write something for Rachel Roth x reader with “ People are gonna tell you who you are your whole life. you just gotta punch back and say, ‘no, this is who i am.’ ””
Rachel was laying in the back seat of your car, awfully silent. You had just picked her up from a random location in Florida. She wouldn’t tell you why she was there, only that she needed you to get her.
“You doing okay?” You asked her. She wouldn’t answer. “Rach?”
“Can you turn some music on?” Rachel mumbled and adjusted her position, facing her back towards you. You complied and switched the radio on, trying to find a decent station. You found a classic rock station snd settled for it, figuring that this was probably the only station in this hell state that Rachel would enjoy.
“Why were you in Florida, Rachel?” You finally had to ask her.
“Wanted to see Disney World.” She sat up and shrugged. You made eye contact through the rear view mirror and cocked and eyebrow at her. She crossed her arms and turned her head, and slouched back. “Wanted to see some more freaks?”
“Are you serious?” You stopped the car and turned around to face her.
“What?” Rachel scrunched her eyebrows together. “I’m a freak, it’s kind of public knowledge.” She shook her head. “Can we just go home.
“Well, Rachel. It’s gonna be a long car ride.” You turned the radio off again. “So buckle up.”
Rachel hadn’t spoken in six hours. Six. You ended up pulling into a motel in Louisiana around 1am. She threw her backpack on her bed and went straight to the bathroom. You heard the shower turn on and shook your head.
“Man, I had to pee.” You told yourself. You switched on the TV and tried to find something to watch. The only thing on was Adult Swim, so you went for it. Rachel came out of the bathroom a little while later and grabbed some pajamas, then disappeared back to the bathroom. When she was dressed, she went right to bed without a word. “Hey, Rachel, we’re not doing this.”
“Doing what?” She groaned.
“I’m not gonna have you ignoring me, okay? We still have a day and a half drive to get back to San Francisco. You’re lucky I was in Georgia when you needed me.” You frowned when she ignored you, then laid next to her in bed. “Why did you bolt again?”
“Why does it matter?” She turned over to face you. “I’m a flight risk, I’m a freak, I’m a demon, whatever. I’m a whole lot of bad things waiting to happen.”
“What are you talking about?” You looked into her eyes and watched her start to cry.
“Everyone’s been telling me that I’m just a ticking time bomb! I’m sick of it.” She sobbed. “It’s not fair, alright? That’s why I went to the other side of the country. The farther I am from my loved ones, the better.”
“That’s obviously not true, or else you wouldn’t have called me.” You held her hand.
“I guess I just trust you more.” She sniffled.
“Listen, Rach. People are gonna tell you who you are your whole life. you just gotta punch back and say ‘no, this is who I am.’ You got me?” You tried to reason. “You think me and our teammates haven’t been criticized for what we can do and how we do it? The things people say about us are ridiculous, but we get to decide if it’s true or not.”
“I don’t know, y/n...” Rachel sighed. “I wish I was normal.”
“Sometimes I do, too. But without us, who’s gonna kick ass without pissing their pants?” You and her giggled.
“I guess you’re right.” She wiped the tears off her face. “Thanks, y/n.”
“Anytime, kiddo. Now, I’ve had to pee for the last two hours, I’ll be back in a minute.”
