I can’t get over how badly written Harry Potter as a character was. Like I could go into an essay about how his upbringing should have effected him in far more complex ways than was written about, or how he experienced no proper character development because he went into the story the same way as he left the story etc etc but my main thing rn is just the fact that... this kid was literally abused and manipulated by authority figures at every turn of his life and he grew up?? Conforming to those authority figures?? He just became an auror and entered society as a perfectly well-adjusted, conformist, law-abiding citizen?? That sucks so fucking much and just doesn’t feel realistic at all. Harry could have been so much cooler had he not been written by a fucking terf conservative. He wasn’t rebellious at all, he was an average skinny white guy who would literally bully me if he got the chance.

In reality, Harry should have fucking REBELLED against the system. In my mind he’s a gnc stoner who sucks dick for money. My guy plays the drums and listens to fucking screamo music. He has tattoos on his top surgery scars. He makes out with guys at the bar. Everyone is wrong about him especially his own fucking author oh my GOD I can’t believe this bitch tried to pretend to us that she was progressive in any fucking way it’s actually so sad and hilarious. Okay ma’am I see you making Hermione Granger Minister for Magic to tick the Hollywood box of “women can be in power too!” It’s a shame your little feminist message is undermined by the fact that all your female characters are married and with children by the time they’re thirty.

So I’m seeing people on tiktok saying it’s problematic to give a trans character a deadname, and I— um... well, I don’t want to speak for all trans people, and there may be something I’m missing here, but as a trans person myself I really don’t see what the problem here is. If they’re saying it’s problematic to call a trans character by their deadname when there’s no need to, then yes, obviously that’s problematic but not giving a trans character a deadname at all is really limiting the amount of experiences that someone can write about.

I myself have to hear my deadname on a daily basis because i’m not out yet, and if I wrote a story about a character in a similar situation I’d be really pissed off if someone told me it was problematic. Once again tiktok seems to lack complete nuance when it comes to this sort of stuff. Trans people have deadnames and unfortunately, they have to be used sometimes before that trans person comes out, and if I want to write about a trans character who’s still in the closet and still has to hear their deadname then I have every right to. I understand how deadnames can be triggering, but all trans experiences and stories deserve to be written about by those who experience them, and yes... that includes misgendering.

I feel like it is quite a privileged take to say that trans characters having deadnames is problematic. I understand people not wanting to read about trans characters being misgendered for personal reasons if it’s triggering, but that shouldn’t mean I can’t write about a character who is in a similar situation to me. I don’t have the freedom or the ability to live my life without hearing my deadname, and if I want to write about that, I’m going to.

I’m sorry if I’m misconstruing what people on tiktok are saying, because I’m pretty sure these people are trans themselves and the last thing I want to do is invalidate a trans person’s own feelings, but for me personally, there is far more nuance to a trans person having a deadname than just “it’s problematic and triggering”. I’m writing about my own experiences here, and that involves getting misgendered. What do you want me to do, say [redacted] every time a trans character is deadnamed? Like, please tell me if what I’m saying is wrong or if I’m missing the point, but it really annoys me sometimes, because it just feels like there’s so many of my own experiences I can’t write about because I’m worried I’m doing something problematic.
