Headcanon that ever since his mum left him the day he turned 10, Xaden has always disliked his birthday and actively avoided celebrating it due to the bad memories it brings up. He’s generally unfriendly and standoffish whenever it rolls around, sparring with Garrick and flying with Sgaeyl to take his mind off it. Until one year, when he’s with Violet, she bakes him a chocolate cake because she knows it’s his favourite, despite that fact that she can’t cook for shit and had to suck up to the cook at Riorson House for the recipe, and he feels his heart melting all over again for this beautiful, brilliant woman who loves him and maybe his birthday isn’t so bad after all.

This just made me think more about the chocolate cake. What if he and his dad woke up that morning to find that his mother had left. Not wanting it to be a completely horrible memory for Xaden, Fen Riorson made a chocolate cake with his son. Neither of them knew their way around the kitchen, and their chef stood by in anxious horror biting back instructions, but the end result was at least edible. As he became a teenager and Fen got busier with the rebellion, they didn’t always have the time to talk it out together, but Xaden knew his dad cared whenever he saw a slice of cake waiting in his room.

Iron flame spoilers again

As I was re-reading some of the passages where Violet is incapable of adding six and one, it occurred to me that if Xaden is venin he may be able to animate wyrvyn.

During the battle of Basgaith, Violet was noticing that there were multiple types of wyrvyn. They seem to be animated with rune stones and Xaden clearly knows more about runes than Violet.

Since Aretia’s wards are going to fall, what if Xaden is able to raise a wyrvyn mirror of Andarna’s breed? Would wyrvyn fire charging a ward stone repel dragons? Hmm

Spoilers for Iron Flame

Keeping secrets aside, the fight Xaden and Violet really need to have is about her death wish in the battle of Basgiath. Like, the man has a lot of history that he’s not openly sharing, but Violet took a look at that wardstone and decided to sacrifice herself (and Tairn) to end the battle. Xaden felt that and then made his choice.

Also—Sgaeyl’s “eerie silence” is pretty sus. Is she being quiet or can Xaden not speak to her now that he’s venin? Violet can still sense him and he still wields his signet power, so it seems like they’re not cut off completely.

With the instability of the signet powers manifesting at random, it also seems unlikely that not a single other dragon rider in history would have reached for more power like Xaden did. Perhaps that’s what the letter to mama Sorrengail in the final chapter intro is hinting at—maybe riders have turned venin before.
