The blog of a happy-go-lucky fashion history loving literature nerd. I love the 18th century, Turn: Washingtons Spies, Star Wars, superheroes, costuming and sewing... it's all good.

Alright. I was.. inspired? Perhaps that’s not the correct word. (I’ll keep it to myself) by @thepiratehunter‘s ‘Javier as Pirate’ pic.

I blame lack of sleep, lack of coffee, and a wild previous crack story (you know who you are!) for what follows:  MEA CULPA

It’s inevitable I fear. Through my spyglass I see the sails.

Black Sails.

‘Capitán!’ I call out in fear, grasping desperately at his sleeve as he appears at my side.

“Do not concern yourself, little Señorita. That m-. That pirate will not dare sail closer.” Salazar had almost called the other Captain a man.

“How strange,’ I whispered, keeping a trained eye on the figure standing tall at the wheel, his billowing black coat emanating a dangerous guise. “He.. if you will pardon me for saying so Capitán, looks very much like you!”

Salazar nodded and gripped at the gunwale, leaning forward as if he were about to leap into the water. “Si.”

I could see the hesitation in his eyes: The narrowing of them, recalling a past that was turning up old ghosts.

‘Have we stumbled upon some other universe? Perhaps if I return to the books the selkie guided us to I could find an answer.’

Armando Salazar turned and held his strong arm across my chest. “There is no need,” he said searching my face, wondering if I might keep the secret he wanted to reveal. Some of his men knew. Lesaro certainly.

But now, with those sails on the horizon there would be no more running. There was nowhere to hide.

‘You cannot mean -,’ I gulped, a cold shiver dancing over my arms.

‘Oh, but I do,’ Salazar assured me. ‘Primo Raymondo.’ He spit the pirate’s name out, stood tall and straightened his coat. ‘I always knew he would turn… Pirate.’

‘But I thought your cousin was a merchant? Roberto, the salsa man.

Salazar brought my chin up with his hand. ‘That cousin, if you recall, has a fear of the seas. I made sure of that.’

Smiling, a mischievous flash sparking in his eyes, Salazar pulled me away from the impending meeting across the waves. ‘But now Señorita, I find myself ravenous. Perhaps you should not have spoken of …salsa.’

A small portrait of cute Sebastien for @montmartre-parapluie 😂 (a closer fragment)

SQUEALS IN JOY!

OMG YOU NAILED HIM PERFECTLY, @frostysky33!!! I always pictured him looking vaguely like Hugh Armitage from Poldark Season 3 - sweet handsome boy, but with a wholesome boy next door feeling. You’ve captured the way I imagined him just wonderfully!!

So, after nearly a month, I’ve *finally* managed to squeeze in another chapter of La Viuda Marina. Apologies for the delay, folks, but I got there eventually!

In which  In which the art of diplomacy and compromise is practiced by La Maria's ambassador, and an introduction is made between ship and passenger...

PotC - DMTnT Question!

Okay, here’s one of the many questions I have and that make no sense with this sequel. Hence why I say that the first three are the only ones in the series as they don’t contradict or retcon most of the history. Anyways, the thing that I don’t get is why is Will gaining sea life as his father had while he served Davy Jones? Wasn’t that the whole thing that if Will actually did the job he was supposed to do he wouldn’t be cursed as Davy Jones was by changing? Unless Will is off doing things he shouldn’t I don’t see why they showed him and the ship cursed again? Since at the end of At World’s End, he wasn’t all crusty and briny. So what gives between the year or three between the end credits scene and the bit in Dead Men Tell no Tales where Henry tied himself to the rock in order to speak with his dad? Is it just because they needed a gimmick for a reason for another movie? And that the ship looked ‘cooler’ as a wreck and haunted?

Canon: Capitán Armando Salazar’s father was once an admiral. But he betrayed Spain – and not just Spain, but his own family – by working with pirates. The man who had been appointed an admiral to arrest and bring pirates to trial had instead been accepting a cut of their stolen plunder. Spanish reales, coins stolen from his own people, in payment for ignoring the crimes of pirates. His father had finally been caught and imprisoned for treason, his mother forcibly dragged away from their home to die in a ‘workhouse’ - the wife of a traitor must pay for his sins - and he’d had to watch as his childhood home and all the wealth of his family had been taken. And they’d taken everything. The portrait of his grandmother; the chest containing his grandfather’s sword and scabbard; even the worn armchair his mother had sat in to tell him stories as a boy, the firelight lending an otherworldly glow to her face as she’d leant forward, voice hushed – all of it was confiscated and sold. All because of his father. And yet, in spite of everything, he’d kept the Salazar name.

But why? Why would he keep a name that would bring him nothing but mockery, scorn and heart ache? Why would he put himself through all of that, as he rebuilt his life, after everything that had been taken from him? Headcanon #1 Because it had never been his father’s name. It had been his mother’s.

Okay, so hear me out.
