The blog of a happy-go-lucky fashion history loving literature nerd. I love the 18th century, Turn: Washingtons Spies, Star Wars, superheroes, costuming and sewing... it's all good.

Since I currently can't work on the plushie due to both my wrists nopeing the fuck out, here's a short video of me attempting to film the progress of Gui's head. I blame my phone, it's tricky to hold it.

@acidyellowlava I know I said his head's in safe hands, I SWEAR, I only dropped him ONCE.🙏😅 Mercy. *flutters eyelashes* 🥺

If you wondering what the crash sound is... It's Gui's head hitting a cinnamon bun wrapping 😭

*Actual footage of me reaching despairingly for the cute-as anything plushie*

Oh my goodness @captainchipe!!

This is a simply GORGEOUS project. I’m sorry I haven’t commented before now, because I am a huge “Tired Dad of the Maria Silenciosa”  Lesaro fan, and seeing him get his very own plushie just fills my stupid little fangirl heart with absolute joy!

Can I say I’m absolutely in AWE of how you’ve done his hair? I used to have a stab at making dolls for obscure fandoms myself back when i was into Turn:Washington Spies, and I ended up using yarn because my experiments with fake hair.... didn’t go well (bald doll, hairy glue-covered fingers)

You are super talented and I love seeing Mini-Lesaro pop up on my dash. May you give him all the snuggles he undoubtedly deserves once you’re done!

WIP Progress picture for @spoomed: Mini-Simcoe 2 A little update for @spoomed ,@detectiverickitubbs, @rapid-apathy, and everyone else who voted on Mini-Simcoe 2’s new hair colour. There was an overwhelming vote in favour of proper, blazing, fiery red - and here we are! (Are we sure that’s Simcoe? not Hamilton or Thomas Jefferson in disguise as a Queens Ranger?) Speaking of Hamilton, he does look rather like a back-up dancer from the musical with those bare arms. But he’s very nearly finished, aside from a very small green coat and hat. And just in time for Christmas, too...

Mini-Lola: Christmas gift for @rapid-apathy!

It’s that time of year again - in addition to working on MiniCoe 2 for the lovely @spoomed, I’ve also had another little Turn character in the works - Miss Lola, from that one episode of Season 4. I know, I know, she’s a little known side character from barely two scenes. But hey, why shouldn’t a Holy Ground lady of ill repute get her own action figure? There’s few enough female characters in Turn as it is. And I loved the dusky pinks in her costume enough to try and recreate it.

Mini!Lola looks far too happy for her humble (and probably NSFW) lot in life, but she turned out rather nicely, and I really enjoyed trying new techniques for getting Lola to look appropriately down at heel.

I copied her costume from the picture above from Rianne Steele’s Twitter

Her petticoats are tea-dyed, to give them a weathered, distressed look, as was the polka-dot net on her corset, to match the colours of the actual gown.  (which was fun, but used about three teabags and made a mess of my kitchen sink for a bit)

Her teensy lace mittens are actually removable! Mini-Lola also has painted stockings and garters, as well as some dainty slippers in black silk clay -that I forgot to take photos of once she was fully dressed. Silly me.

I am definitely proud of her hair. I’m getting better at hair the more I practice, ang Mini!Lola has a recognisable style! Even better, little ringlets and loose curls - which I really struggled with for mini-Anna.

Materials:

  • 1 eight-inch artist’s poseable mannequin figurine
  • Fimo polymer doll clay
  • 2 black beads for the eyes
  • I scrap white net fabric (gloves/ net on corset)
  • pink linen fabric (tea dyed for petticoats)
  • pink chiffon fabric (overgown)
  • black silk clay ( slippers)
  • blue floral ribbon
  • miniature blue silk rose
  • 3 pink silk roses (hair decoration)
  • brown/pink braid (hair decoration)
  • black yarn for the hair.
  •  watercolour pencils for the cheek/face details.
  • fineliner pens

Stay tuned (or should that be Turn-ed?) for more in the obscure fandom arts and crafts line!

So, apologies for being absent without leave, people! I've recently moved apartments again, and I'm not due to get Internet until the 25th, so it's been rather dark and 'data limit'-y this week. I'm lucky my hotel has wifi this weekend! But I couldn't go off into reenactment land without sharing my latest project! This is all @mercurygray and @calamity-bean's fault, by the way. Merc had to go and write La Fille de Regiment, with the lovely Margaret Frances, 18th century laundress - and then @calamity-bean had to go and do some absolutely AMAZING fanart of Margaret, wearing such a cute little short jacket with a gorgeous print of columbine flowers all over it. So, when I saw this verrrry similar floral cotton print in my local fabric shop - well, 18th century sewing happens. I did my own take on Margaret's gorgeous swallowtail jacket in the picture, with ribbon and blue front lacing. Once I've made a blue petticoat and apron, this baby is going to @mercurygray to have fun with as she pleases...

Also known as the super teeny-weeny Major Edmund Hewlett post - and FINALLY completed! I originally started making tiny Hewlett and Anna dolls for the ever-wonderful @calamity-bean way back at Christmas-time, as a little thank you, but with one thing and another, it's ended up as a sort-of Easter present. Sorry, @calamity-bean! But at least you should get him (and the lovely Mrs Strong) by the end of April. Call it a token of my respect and friendship. Well, Mini-Hewlett here went together much better than Anna did, possibly because I'd already worked out the logistics of making men's uniforms from @rapid-apathy's Mini-Simcoe. Being smaller, though, the major got much less pretty braid and silver lace sewn on his uniform - something Simcoe would probably be insufferably smug about. But Mini- Hewlett has got a Mini-Anna, dude. I wouldn't gloat too much. I think my favourite part of making the major was probably his tiny riding boots, made out of a small piece of leather stitched in a tube with his painted feet. The dark red sash is a tiny piece of ribbon - and his brass buttons are those little stick-on dots you can find in craft shops sewn down ! Sadly the facings are a bit uneven, so he looks a bit absent-minded - and dishevelled. (Personally, I think Anna may be to blame for that one, hehe) But gosh, his HAIR! That was my favourite part, because it was so simple! I'd struggled for ages trying to make a tiny removable white wig, and initially I was just going to paint on his dark hair - but I eventually discarded that idea as being overly- complicated for such a small project. I found some some soft black 'cuddle fleece fabric', and simply glued a scalp shaped piece onto Mini-Hews scalp. IT gives him adorable rumpled black hair, that is also rather nice to pet, should you be in the mood! @calamity-bean - maybe you should practice Annlett voodoo with these to ensure a happy season 4 outcome.
