If a werewolf dyed her hair, should it affect the color of her fur post transformation?

Oh man, you got me thinking now, Anon! I'm gonna say the hair would grow from the follicle each time, so it wouldn't carry the dye through between shifts... probably???

quick & dirty werewolf romance rec list

Tumblr recs

  • @monstersandmaw - Gabe and Odessa, complete, full novel. I cannot tell you how many times I've read this story. It's a comfort read okay. Slow burn. Odessa, lawyer, escaping the city, moves into a small cabin in the woods and meets Gabe, a park ranger, with more to him than it seems. Just a beautiful story.
  • @snowkissedmonsters - Candy and the wolves. Explores poly dynamics between a wolfpack and the human waitress Candy who is their mate. Gorgeous art to accompany it too!

Hiii, I love all of your works and not long ago I read your fic about Caleb and Rowan. And I want to know if you will ever write about them again? Have a nice day and stay happy ❤❤❤

Oh my goodness, thank you!! I'm so happy you enjoy what I share on here, and thank you for taking the time to reach out and let me know!

Unfortunately for you though, I don't have any plans at the moment to write more of Caleb and Rowan :(. Never say never, but it's not on my radar at the moment.

Hope you had/have a nice day too! It was really sunny here for once, and I just adore sunny days in winter/spring, so I was actually happy for once.

unnnggggff the urge to write another modern werewolf romance story has risen in me despite having many other projects on the go. ffffffffffffffffffffffuck why do i do this to myself...

@severedreamerbeard you horrid, wicked little enabler-gremlin, you.

Fine. Look what you made me do. *writes a cheesy ‘romance novel’ style blurb and does a fancy little moodboard just for you*. Because you asked nicely and you’re so lovely all the time.

Working title: Wolfmaw

*CW for brief mention below of past abusive relationship, an attack at night, and mention of blood*

When Faye Carter decides to rebuild her life, after finally finding the courage to get out of an abusive relationship, she signs up to self-defence classes at Wolfmaw Gym and starts to claw back some self-confidence. Pun intended.
Six months later, she’s a little bit fitter, and whole lot happier in herself than she’s been in years. She’s even made a few friends.
When she sees her trainer talking one evening to the most beautiful man she’s ever seen, a little of that new-found confidence crumbles away, especially when he looks over at her and glares like he wants to paint the walls of the gym with her blood and entrails. It’s shocking that someone as easy-going and friendly as Teo would know someone as patently terrifying as the man in that sharp, black suit, let alone talk to him so familiarly, but it’s even more surprising that he comes to Teo’s Halloween fundraiser that very weekend. He does deign to speak to Faye for a few minutes, though he leaves looking like he feels the need to bathe in disinfectant, but that’s not the most disturbing thing that happens to her that night.
She witnesses a stranger tear out the throat of one of the party-goers with his teeth in a side alley, and then he discards the corpse and comes at her with red eyes blazing and blood pouring down his chin.
Turns out vampires are real, and she just accidentally (?) staked one to death in an alley with a bit of wooden pallet. She has learned something from six months of self-defence classes after all.
The guy with the snappy suit, Luca, is actually some kind of werewolf royalty, and he’s not happy with her — not only for finding out about their secret world (though really, how is that her fault?!), but also for potentially breaking the fragile truce with the local vampire coven and risking a messy turf war. Oh, and neither her new best friend nor her trainer are human either. The clue should have been in the name, but actually almost no one at Wolfmaw Gym is human.
Except Faye.
The supernatural is real, and she’s stumbled right into the deep end…

Aka: Luca is an aloof asshole with a secret heart of gold and more money than God, Teo is the Most Golden Retriever of all werewolves and may or may not be in a secret, forbidden relationship with a vampire; Faye’s accidentally become besties with said vampire’s exiled sister, and she’s really just trying to perfect her left hook while avoiding kicking off an interspecies war…

Aka: a pretty tropey ‘supernatural billionaire boyfriend’ romance ft. an m/f main pairing, with an lgbtq+ cast, and a bunch more cliches thrown in too.

__

Should I write it in full? I’ve started a bit already... lemme know via the usual channels, folks (I’m not accepting messenger birds at this time, but asks, comments, reblogs and likes are always welcome).

Also also I just remembered your asheridge pack Bois of Sol and Luke so for that same ask game where I asked about your other Bois :tm:, how about 🍋 and 🍍

Avatar

Oh ho, that werewoof pack story. Hnnngggg I really should get back to that, but it needs a complete re-write...

Anyway, beware some spoilers below... mention of parental death, and paralysis to sibling for Sol, and death of mother from cancer and a distant, alcohol-dependent father figure for Luke.

Super grumpy lad Sol first:

🍋: What is your OC’s most painful memory?

The night his parents were killed, and his sister was paralysed, which triggered his feral state for almost a year is probably the most painful thing that's ever happened to him...

🍍: Where does your OC feel most comfortable?

Sol is not a man (werewolf) who feels comfortable very easily. He's got PTSD symptoms which include hyper-vigilance, so it's hard for him to let himself switch off. Later in their relationship, when he's comfortable being shifted around Luke, he very much enjoys lying with his head in Luke's lap and letting him stroke his fur and play with his ears. It's very calming for him after so long of fighting everything and pushing almost everyone away.

And Luke:

🍋: Luke went to live with his father when he was young, after his mother passed from cancer, and his father was distant and had an alcohol dependency issue that definitely affected Luke's childhood (which is why he spent so much time with Harry and his family until they basically just informally adopted him into the family.

🍍: Luke loves libraries, museums, and antique stores; places where he's surrounded by relics of the past. When he's not lost in a book, a cuddle with wolf- or human- Sol is the next best thing...

(Thank you! OC asks here)

Werewolf pack mud puddle adventure. Presumably they hire the local mobile dog wash company for the afterparty, who are advised to wear bite armor and ear defenders.

Aww!

I came across a link on here to a transcript from an old-school message board thread entitled "dogs in elk", in which someone's two dogs had found an elk carcass, climbed inside, and had an extremely gross and gory party whilst refusing to come out for at least a full day

Please imagine someone dealing with their werewolf partner doing this. "No, they're not stuck. Yeah, I can't remove them, they plant their paws in and scream when I try. They're very happy. Please can you bring a chainsaw and the mobile dog wash van. And some brandy. I am so tired."

(As a dog owner, part of the fun is the "oh for ****'s sake" moments they generate)

Oh man, dogs are the worst sometimes (and I say this as a former dog owner). My spaniel would be guaranteed to find the nastiest shit out there on a walk (literally sometimes) and roll in it. Or eat it. Or both.

Anyway, yes, shifted werewolves who lose track of their 'human' mind and control a bit would definitely get into disgusting shenanigans like that. They'd come to afterwards and be like... 'babe... why are you looking at me like that? ahhh shit, what did i do this time?'

Well, folks, we finally did it! This is my longest-running story on here, and it’s finally come to an end. Kind of. This is the end of ‘Season One’ (for want of a better term), and I have a short interlude planned from Gabe’s POV, followed by a ‘Season Two’. I also asked you what other ‘non-humans’ you’d like to see for 2023, so I’m going to be working on some other stories too since my workshop is currently flooded and out of action for the forseeable future. Thanks for your input and ideas with that - I always welcome prompts and ideas, even if I don’t guarantee to write them!

Anyway, enough waffle. Here’s the wrap-up to G&O (if you have any ideas for actual titles for this story, please tell me - I did ask ages ago but my dumb brain cell forgot them!).

Content: After two blissful weeks, Odessa has to say farewell to Gabe and Pinewatch, and return to the city, but once she’s there, things turn out to be not quite so bleak… Wordcount: 4367

Catch up here:

Part One (sfw), Part Two (sfw), Part Three (sfw), Part Four (sfw), Part Five (sfw), Part Six (sfw) Part Seven (sfw), Part Eight (sfw), Part Nine (sfw), Part Ten (sfw), Part Eleven (nsfw), Part Twelve (sfw), Part Thirteen (sfw), Part Fourteen (nsfw), Part Fifteen (nsfw), Part Sixteen (nsfw), Part Seventeen (sfw), Part Eighteen (v. light nsfw), Part Nineteen (nsfw), Part Twenty (nsfw), Part Twenty-One (nsfw)

Odessa woke the next morning and for three full minutes, she didn’t think about having to leave.

The moment she did, she began to cry.

Silent tears slid from the corners of her eyes to melt into her hair as she lay on her back and stared at the ceiling while Gabe slept on silently beside her, curled on his side and facing her. His chest rose and fell with the regular, quiet ease of someone deeply and contentedly asleep, and she tried to focus on that instead, letting her mind drift along with each steady inhale and exhale. Memories of her fortnight in the forest scudded across her mind’s eye like little boats in a flotilla of happy snapshots: walks to the lake, shy flirting, drinks at the pub, new friends, discovering fairytale creatures were real, more mind-blowing and affectionate sex than she’d ever had in her life, pancakes, blackberry cupcakes, waterfalls and werebears, adorable wolf-dogs, Gabe’s hazel eyes and dimpled smile…

Somehow, her last day in Pinewatch had dawned, and the idea of leaving all that behind just seemed more painful and unfair than anything she’d ever experienced, even if it wouldn’t be for long. For a long time, she couldn’t move so much as a muscle as the sudden, sharp grief crushed her and buried her beneath its weight.

Beside her, Gabe inhaled deeply through his nose. “Hey,” he mumbled, coming awake sharply and reaching for her with a frown. He blinked back the bleary remnants of sleep from his eyes and brushed the tears from her face with his knuckles. He kissed her temple, shuffling closer to her and tucking the duvet up around her. “Come here.”

With Gabe wrapped around her body from behind, holding her tightly enough that she felt a little more grounded, she began to feel marginally better, and with a deep sigh, she tried to let it all go. “I know it’s only temporary,” she said, kissing his hand before he moved it to continue stroking her hair. It was too wildly curled and tangled for him to comb his fingers through it, but the way his palm skated over the contours of her skull calmed something deep within her.

“Still sucks though,” he said and she hummed. “Could I come and visit you there?” he asked after a pause.

She frowned. She hadn’t even considered that as an option. “In the city? I thought you hated it? And what about your family? And the dogs?”

She felt him smile and he kissed her again. “I hated it there because I thought I had no choice about my future. The dogs will be fine on their own in the enclosure for a few days. I’ll take them for a long run when I get back, and Tala or Carys can feed them for me once a day.”

“And… your family?” she asked when she realised that was the only thing he hadn’t answered.

So this is a werid ask, but how would you react if someone treats one of your werewolf OCS as a dog? Like squeaking a ball at them, just in general treating them dumb? I've ran into a few and it irritates me so much.

For me this all depends on how a person imagines their werewolf character's state of mind is during the shift, and how much of their humanity they keep. After all, in many stories, when a shifter transforms, they lose all concept of humanity, forget who they are, and do become essentially a beast. It depends on the setting and on the writer.

For most all(?)* of my were-creature characters though, they fundamentally stay the same as when they're in their human form, with just a few subtle differences, so doing that would probably make them very angry and unimpressed.

Take Gabe as a case study for how the shift affects my various were-creatures' mental faculties:

  • Perfectly able to understand human speech but cannot reply in the same due to the physical limitations of his mouth/teeth etc. (could if he learned sign language?).
  • Reading and understanding human language is a little harder when shifted though. Gabe describes it thus: "I can read, but… wolf brains aren’t really wired for human languages. It’s… hard to process."
  • However, Gabe does lose a bit of nuance when he shifts: "When I shift, everything is more… primal. I’m still myself, but […] It’s all a lot less nuanced. Things are simpler as a wolf. It’s a lot more instinct-driven. I can understand human speech, but it takes a little while to process sometimes, and sometimes I’ll act before I think things through.”
  • He owns three wolf-dogs, and will happily shift and play around with them on their terms, and would probably even let Odessa throw sticks into the lake for them all to chase and fetch, but the important factor here is that she knows he's still in there, and that he's doing it specifically as part of playing with the dogs. He'd never be interested in doing that with just Odessa on their own because that's weird and patronising, and she'd never dream of offering.

So yeah, I wouldn't like it if someone treated my shifted werewolves as dumb animals, but everyone is entitled to imagine their own fantasy characters however they like.

*I am currently playing with a beauty and the beast idea with a shifter who's forgotten a lot of his humanity, but that's a bit of an outlier really in my work, and not quite the same thing as losing it completely every time he shifts.

a child with some kind of unusual physical affliction being thrown out of their village by superstitious elders as a "bad omen" and abandoned to the wolves in the woods, but is taken in by a pack of werewolves who adopt them as one of their own

Found family always gets me. Person cast out for [insert arbitrary reason here] and finds love either with a bunch of misfits and/or with a bunch of scary-as-fuck monsters who are entirely wholesome, supportive, and loving. And who will eat the people who caused their new family member’s sadness. Every time. Yes.

Favorite movie werewolfs and favorite movie vamps?

In terms of design, my favourite werewolves on film are probably the Van Helsing ones (though their teeth are kinda goofy), but I also like the Lycans from the Underworld franchise. (The werewolves & werebears in Skyrim are neat too; extremely boopable snoots as well...)

Favourite movie vampires are actually difficult for me. I really enjoy the campy-gothic nature of the Underworld vampires though. I also enjoyed the sadly-shortlived series 'Moonlight', and Buffy-verse vampires are usually fun. I'm struggling to think of others I really liked though (the Cruise/Pitt Interview with a Vampire ones are ok, I guess). I've only really enjoyed the first one, but the super schlocky 1991 film 'Subspecies' has a fun take on them (though it was difficult to enjoy the vampires because I was too busy falling in love with the female (human) lead...).

I feel like we've been cheated over and over when it comes to 'proper' werewolves and vampires in film and tv (and by 'we', I mean 'monsterfuckers', obviously). The wolfman form that Dracula takes in the 1992 film Dracula is a peak monsterfucker moment though. I mean...
