It still boggles my mind that there's a huge demographic of fanfic readers who won't read some of fandoms greatest stories just because they're incomplete. and this goes even harder when these stories are already like 30+ chapters in length. like a whole week of you engrossed in one of the most beautiful fics you've ever read is not worth it just because it doesn't warp up nicely with a final chapter? seriously you guys are missing out on so much.

Me recently moving into a new place has made me want to write yet another (potentially uni) AU where Peeta and Katniss live in the same apartment building and learn to know each other by randomly running into each other in various places such as a small elevator...

The trauma and then the alcohol pickled his emotional development, preserving it at his 16 year old state

The boy with the bread is the most obvious example of the “hunger” theme in the books, whereby Peeta literally keeps Katniss and Prim alive by giving them bread at his own expense. Right off the bat, this sets up food (more specifically bread) as a source of not only physical nourishment, but spiritual nourishment as well. To Katniss, bread and Peeta both symbolize hope and life. I feel like Haymitch’s alcoholism is an extension of this theme?

Haymitch drinks alcohol constantly and Katniss comments in the first book that she rarely sees him eat (ie. that he doesn’t nourish himself physically or, by the theme of the book, spiritually). She also compares being drunk/hungover to being poisoned. President Snow literally drinks poison and coughs up blood. The metaphor could not be any clearer - he’s a bad dude who ingests and expels nothing but death. Haymitch’s experience in The Games figuratively poisoned him and he turned to alcohol as a way to try and forget, continually poisoning himself.

When Haymitch and Katniss get drunk together, Peeta freaks out and throws away all of Haymitch’s alcohol, insisting that all three of them start a training regimen for the Quarter Quell. Once again, Peeta swoops in to provide some motivation at a time when everything seems pretty much lost, getting rid of the “poison” aka the hopelessness that living in President Snow’s world brings.

The depth of this story and these characters is something else 😭
