which, really, was also Katniss’s strategy, but the she wasn’t privy to the “get my husband back” timeline (narrator: there wasn’t one until she went catatonic)

I actually think that Peeta *would* be easier to work with-- as long as he thought that Coin was making a good faith effort to save Katniss. The instant he learned she wasn't, though? All hell would break loose.

that’s a valid point he probably would play nice while it benefited him (source: his time as a POW with Snow) but more impressive @warriorlid14 you can’t leave the part about him and Gale being roommates in the tags can you imagine the havoc that could be perpetrated (or maybe the just warfare philosophy discussions that could be had I mean either one)

The thing is, Gale doesn't *hate* Peeta. At worst, he begrudgingly respects him, and at best, he begrudgingly likes him. So I do think that would eventually turn into a friendship.

I do think that Gale would mostly avoid him at first, only really interacting when needed. But with time and more interactions (and nightly nightmares they'd refuse to talk about), Gale would grow more sympathetic. After all, this kid lost his whole family and also Katniss and is virtually alone. I imagine Gale would invite him to eat lunch with his family once and then it becomes routine and then Peeta is sort of not really adopted into the Hawthornes (as Katniss was).

Peeta is also really good at making people open up emotionally. Which would really help Gale's whole "the only emotion I feel is anger, grr" and maybe help him process some grief and trauma from D12's bombings.

Definitely loads of philosophy talks around war. Absolute havoc being wreaked when Peeta inevitably susses out Coin's true intentions.

(And if you wanna make it gayer and funnier, you can have Gale both a little scared and horny when they're in training and realizes that Peeta can absolutely pin his ass down in hand to hand combat)
