HAYMITCH
I wish I had more time (and energy) to draw Second Quarter Quell gen characters before the book release. I’m ready for my headcanons to be smashed and burn but I want to enjoy them as long as possible haha.
How are you guys?

meme under the cut
While I expect Maysilee will be the ‘most stuck-up girl in town’ character, I don’t actually think that will be a defining character trait - I suspect that’s Haymitch’s perception of her before they meet, similar to Katniss telling us that you might expect the mayor’s daughter to be a ‘snob’
Also:
Maysilee’s parents own the sweetshop - how frivolous must that place seem to a boy who comes from the part of town where ‘starvation’s not an uncommon fate’?
I welcome you all to my huge project! Big thanks to @thehellcaster for commissioning this. Look below the cut for the large images!
the synopsis and cover of the new hunger games book, sunrise on the reaping, out march 18, 2025.
"Sunrise on the Reaping" will revisit the world of Panem 24 years before the events of "The Hunger Games," starting on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.
As the day dawns on the 50th annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves. When Haymitch’s name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He’s torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who’s nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he’s been set up to fail. But there’s something in him that wants to fight ... and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.
🎃 Trick or Treat 👻
hi! thanks for coming by. unfortunately the porch lights are off and I have no candy, and now I am going to ramble at you while rifling through my pantry to find something for you...
I've recently had the odd idea to combat my slow fic updating by branching out and writing little cut scenes for SOO from outside perspectives. I am under no delusion these would be well received, or interesting to anybody but me and possibly you. Idk, it's a way to refresh my brain without getting out of the brain rot entirely.
so anyway, from this idea, I got some ideas for two stories with my OCs from SOO:
Kennet & Selene: how they met and ended up at Haymitch's house. the long and short of it is, Selene (an Avox) saved Kennet (a D12 refugee) from a pod while he was fighting in the Capitol. she leads him to safety through the Transfer, and Kennet in turn protects her through the end of the war, and they stick together after that. they're surprised they can communicate with each other so easily when they've never met anyone like the other before. once they have to stay with Haymitch for a bit, it would offer more details to that time I couldn't get into during those chapters bc of pacing and such. I was very sad I couldn't include more about Hotel Haymitch (or Peeta's Palace) outside of a couple throwaway lines, so this would fill in some blanks there as well as give me new characters to play with and develop.
Alice: truly any day with Alice will have something entertaining imo (very biased), but I really like the idea of her interacting with Hazelle and Haymitch in a normal setting where we can see their vibe from the outside looking in. Hazelle tends to forget how scary Haymitch comes across to others and doesn't fully realize how he treats her differently. meanwhile Haymitch is perceptive but gets in his own head a lot or ignores things if he doesn't think it's worth it to him (or that he's worth it for it, if that makes sense). so having someone who is taking it all in like ...wait... would be very amusing and very fun to write. no promises her takeaway would be ours, though. not much of a plot to this one yet, but I am toying with Alice and Haymitch being in cahoots about something concerning Hazelle. we'll see.
we'll have to see if I do any of this, lol 🤷🏻♀️
oh, and here's some leftover cookies from Trader Joe's!
🍪🍪🍪
I LOvE all of this and let me just tell you, I SPRINTED up the stairs to take pictures of this children’s book upon reading ‘Hotel Haymitch’ lol!
How perfect is this?!??
Bruce the bear who’s a grump and accidentally becomes the mother to four geese comes home from Florida (migrating) to discover his house has been turned into a hotel
why is it always crows or ravens in ya literature??? is it because they’re scary and foreboding?? you know what else is scary and foreboding?? geese. show some originality, give me a book with philosophical quotes about geese
trick or treat! haymitch headcanons please?

And as a treat: some post war Haymitch love!
Haymitch is not Katniss and Peeta’s father. He’s not their uncle, he’s not their child - but never the less he’s family
In Catching Fire Katniss says:
The liquor isn't for my family. It's for Haymitch, who acted as mentor for Peeta and me in the Games. He's surly, violent, and drunk most of the time. But he did his job - more than his job because for the first time in history, two tributes were allowed to win. So no matter who Haymitch is, I owe him, too. And that's for always.
He’s part of the ‘always’ pact in his own way
One of the first things I ever wrote was a Haymitch POV one-shot Haunted House which featured a favorite HC - Haymitch’s super power is miffing them off, but it’s often used for good!
Somehow I end up on the receiving end of their complaints about each other. At least until I piss them off enough to send them running back to the other. That’s my specialty: creating a common enemy in myself to unite them.
Haymitch knew from the moment Katniss volunteered that she was a contender.
Think about his actions after the district salutes Katniss
Now I am truly in danger of crying, but fortunately Haymitch chooses this time to come staggering across the stage to congratulate me. "Look at her. Look at this one!" he hollers, throwing an arm around my shoulders. He's surprisingly strong for such a wreck. "I like her!" His breath reeks of liquor and it's been a long time since he's bathed. "Lots of ..." He can't think of the word for a while. "Spunk!" he says triumph-antly. "More than you!" he releases me and starts for the front of the stage. "More than you!" he shouts, pointing directly into a camera.
Is he addressing the audience or is he so drunk he might actually be taunting the Capitol? I'll never know because just as he's opening his mouth to continue, Haymitch plummets off the stage and knocks himself unconscious.
He's disgusting, but I'm grateful. With every camera gleefully trained on him, I have just enough time to release the small, choked sound in my throat and compose myself. I put my hands behind my back and stare into the distance. I can see the hills I climbed this morning with Gale. For a moment, I yearn for something ... the idea of us leaving the district ... making our way in the woods ... but I know I was right about not running off. Because who else would have volunteered for Prim?
He may be drunk, but that’s not what’s happening here. This is a performance: a calculated diversion so she can pull herself together and remain appearing strong to the audience.
He’s strategizing long before the confrontation on the train.
Haymitch raising/taking care of geese has always intrigued me so much and as a textbook over-analyzer I decided to look into it. Now Suzanne may have chosen geese at random, but that won’t stop me from looking for some deeper meaning and this is what I found.
Geese are monogamous, meaning they live in permanent pairs through out the year. And historically, they have been seen as rather easy prey to target especially by the first European colonizers when they came to America. And what else come in pairs and have been seen as easy targets within the Hunger Games? Tributes, especially tributes from district 12.
However, there is also some literary and rhetorical significance to Haymitch raising geese as well. Once again, geese are often associated with the phrase “silly goose” and “goose” means “fool” or “silly one” in many modern languages in which geese have been seen as foolish or helpless. Much of the same can be said for all of the previous tributes Haymitch mentored before Katniss and Peeta. So there is something particularly moving about the fact that Haymitch takes care of geese because of the ways that they mirror the tributes.
However, the same can, in many ways, be said of Haymitch who had gained a reputation for being the drunk and silly mentor who never led his tributes to victory. However, we know just how much the odds were against those tributes and we know just how much trauma Haymitch endured during his own games and from watching tribute after tribute die. And yet, he survived and he played an important part within the rebellion in which he becomes likened to the quote “all his geese are swans.”
And this makes Haymitch (unconsciously) taking care of geese that much more impactful and adds a bit more depth even if it was unintentional on Suzanne’s part.
Geese are also fiercely territorial and protective. They love their caretakers and absolutely will rock your shit if they don’t know you. They can act as guard animals for other domestic birds.
He's sure Katniss and Peeta were too wrapped up in each other to even notice what was happening until it was too late. Whatever - he knows his place as a footnote in their overarching love story.
Stop it 😭
when the mentor character knows he's the mentor character and gets all despairing and existential about it 😬

And
"Of course Peeta's right. The whole country adores Katniss's little sister. If they really killed her like this, they'd probably have an uprising on their hands," says Johanna flatly. "Don't want that, do they?" She throws back her head and shouts, "Whole country in rebellion? Wouldn't want anything like that!"
My mouth drops open in shock. No one, ever, says anything like this in the Games. Absolutely, they've cut away from Johanna, are editing her out. But I have heard her and can never think about her again in the same way. She'll never win any awards for kindness, but she certainly is gutsy. Or crazy. She picks up some shells and heads toward the jungle. "I'm getting water," she says.
I can't help catching her hand as she passes me. "Don't go in there. The birds -"I remember the birds must be gone, but I still don't want anyone in there. Not even her.
"They can't hurt me. I'm not like the rest of you. There's no one left I love," Johanna says, and frees her hand with an impatient shake. When she brings me back a shell of water, I take it with a silent nod of thanks, knowing how much she would despise the pity in my voice.
The goal of eliminating Haymitch and Johanna’s loved ones was to break them (and set an example), but the unintended consequence was that they have nothing left to lose.
we've done east + southeast asian district 4, south asian district 7, and lat-am district 10. now, brace yourself for an indigenous seam!
