The roof is not lit at night, but as soon as my bare feel reach its tiled surface I see his silhouette, black against the lights that shine endlessly in the Capitol.. My feet move soundlessly across the tiles. I’m only yard behind him when I say, “You should be getting some sleep.” He starts but doesn’t turn. I can see him give his head a slight shake. “I didn’t want to miss the party. It’s for us, after all.”

The Hunger Games Chapter 10

Testing the colour settings on my computer so things don't come out washed out and desaturated anymore.

Trick or treat!! (I’ll get to yours I promise)

Welcome welcome!

Come on in and have some candy:

🍫🍬🍭

And as a treat…

There’s a prosthetic company in our city that is very involved in the community. They sponsor all sorts of events and at their booth they hand out candy and promotional materials from the socket of a prosthetic.

So now I’m picturing a modern day Peeta doing the same at Halloween dressed like this:

So was Suzanne Collins trying to be deliberately cruel by having Peeta say a lot of things during the Quell that could be contrasted with what hijacked Peeta says about Katniss.

  • Peeta saying he has a weakness for Katniss’s beauty -> telling her she’s not particularly pretty
  • Peeta calling Katniss pure and liking her for that -> implying that more happened between them on the train in a derogatory way
  • Peeta saying Katniss is perfect to him -> calling her a piece of work
  • Katniss paying particular attention to how good his lips feel against her neck -> his hands wrapping around her neck

Peeta rises from the floor and scoops up a handful of ice from under the fruit tureen. He starts to raise it to the red mark on his jaw.

It strikes me how quickly and automatically Peeta tries to ice his wound after getting punched. To me, this is more evidence that getting hit is a regular occurrence for him and he habitually tries to hide the marks of his mother's abuse. It makes me wonder what his school life was like. Obviously his teachers and classmates must have noticed what was going on in his home, but clearly there's no kind of child protection services in Panem (other than Katniss's fear that they'll be taken to the community home if people find out they're starving to death).

Also, I'm just realizing that Peeta is constantly getting injured in the first book - the first time Katniss sees him he gets a black eye, then punched by Haymitch, then his hands are cut up, and then all of his many injuries in the Games. This poor boy!

"...the baker, Peeta Mellark's father...he knows Prim even better. When she sells her goat cheeses at the Hob, she puts two of them aside for him and he gives her a generous amount of bread in return. We always wait to trade with him when his witch of a wife isn't around because he's so much nicer."

A few things I noticed for the first time on this reread:

-Prim trades in the Hob?? For some reason I never imagined Prim herself frequenting the black market. Probably because of the way Katniss describes her as too soft for hunting in the woods. Just a little hint at the toughness we see in Prim in the next two books.

-This is one of two times in this chapter the baker is described as a generous trader. I think he is concerned about many hungry people in the Seam, and trading with them generously is the way he tries to help them. This is especially remarkable considering his own family can't afford to eat their own bread unless it's gone stale.

-Prim's goat cheese is mentioned later in the book by Peeta, when he talks about the goat cheese and apple tart they make in the bakery. Also interesting that it comes up after Katniss tells him the story of how she bought the goat - it shows just how interconnected their lives are in this small town, even though they never speak to one another.

Katniss and Peeta after meeting 2.0 seconds ago, being reaped to kill each other:

Side note: I think it’s the fact that Katniss hears Peeta laugh that eases her to make a joke. She literally just met this boy, and he can loosen her up. The effect HE has on her is something I can talk for dayss.

THG Chapter 3

The baker sits awkwardly on the edge of one of the plush chairs. He’s a big, broad-shouldered man with burn scars from years at the ovens. He must have just said good-bye to his son.
He pulls a white paper package from his jacket pocket and holds it out to me. I open it and find cookies. These are a luxury we can never afford.
“Thank you,” I say. The baker’s not a very talkative man in the best of times, and today he has no words at all. “I had some of your bread this morning. My friend Gale gave you a squirrel for it.” He nods, as if remembering the squirrel. “Not your best trade,” I say. He shrugs as if it couldn’t possibly matter.

Mockingjay Chapter 26

Through the water in the glass, I see a distorted image of one of Peeta’s hands. The burn marks. We are both fire mutts now. My eyes travel up to where the flames licked across his forehead, singeing away his brows but just missing his eyes. Those same blue eyes that used to meet mine and then flit away at school. Just as they do now.

It's interesting how the fandom and fanfics have such a consistently positive portrayal of Mr. Mellark

I think some of it comes from Katniss’s description of Mr. Mellark (and lack thereof). She doesn’t necessarily have anything bad to say about him and defends him to an extent:

We always wait to trade with him when his witch of a wife isn't around because he's so much nicer. I feel certain he would never have hit his son the way she did over the burned bread.

There are a couple one liners from Into the Woods that get stuck in my head: Nice is different than good is one of them.

Nice is about appearance and Mr Mellark is the Nice Baker, not the Kindly Baker.

Kind is word Katniss reserves for Peeta (and Madge)

👻 Trick or Treat 🎃

Trick or treat! 🍭 Thanks for all the fun this month of October, with organizing the THG trick or treat and all. I wanted to keep yours for last, and make it a good one! Have some Peeta being silly with SFX makeup on Halloween.

(cw: mild fake gore)

(This would of course have to take place in a modern/no games au - he wouldn't think of trying this in canon </3)

((And before you say "how did he lose his leg if there's no games??" PEETA IS A DISABLED CHARACTER!!!!! HES DISABLED IN EVERY AU!!!))

Anyway, Happy Halloween!! And thank you for all the asks. 🧡

i am a firm believer that the most significant difference between the 74th games and the ones before is the berry scene. it is the concept that two people would risk their own survival, their own life, in order to save the person they love.

because it is not like all of the children that came before katniss and peeta were coldhearted killers. they weren't. in fact, many of them actively memorialized their dead peers. they saw the other tributes as people. people that deserved respect and reverence in their pitiful funeral.

however, for all of the tributes, their survival came first. even reaper, who offered a proper funeral for his fellow tributes, was very clear about his intentions to kill the others. and yes, he was sorry about it. but at the end of the day. he would kill them (tbosas, 191).

but for katniss and peeta, they just... couldn't. they couldn't let the other person die in front of them. let alone, kill them.

because although katniss's memorial for rue was powerful, it was not new. but the fact that they would rather die than live in a world without the other? that was the radical thing.
