my most pertinent scrapped idea is katniss’ field of study. originally, i wasn’t planning on including her songwriting in the fic at all! i was going to have katniss be the limonologist (a profession that later went to finnick) but when gracie abrams dropped a snippet of the song ‘i love you, i’m sorry’ waaay back in april this year, everything changed lmao. that unlocked what i think of as the beating heart of the fic, which is the songs that im borrowing from gracie that katniss writes. that song really opened a lot of doors for the story’s development and plot beats

stay with me on this very cracky train of thought: Haymitch renaissance in the time of a SOO!Hayzelle toasting...
Katniss is invited to Hazelle's bach party and goes bc she figures, *she's* invited so it can't be that bad. Hazelle is a 40 something year old mom on her second marriage, how crazy could it be? just a light-hearted, kid-free night in with the women in her life. Katniss walks in, there's a candid of Haymitch in his firefighter uniform on the cake. she's like,I need to leave. she came with her MOM. and it actually ends up being a normal get together but she is on EDGE. she eats a plain corner slice.
meanwhile, at Haymitch's bach, he is holding his friends + Peeta hostage to play Panem-equivalent Risk. "this is my first ever wedding, you have to," he says, fake-but-also-not brattily, in a ridiculous sash Johanna is making him wear (Johanna is attending both events in the same night). Plutarch brought cigars ("They're nonalcoholic!"). Beetee has made and brought every firework known to man. the geese are present, in party hats.

Poor Katniss is so uncomfortable. She’s so ready to bolt at the slightest innuendo and Johanna (and Alice) are there so of course theirs plenty! (Of course Johanna is attending both)

The thing that cracks me up about the cake is - I can picture it and in my head it’s one of those grocery store sheet cakes with one of those pictures printed with edible ink and Katniss, on top of being mortified that they’re sexualizing Haymitch, is just as horrified that it’s on a cake. She’s incensed, like - you know Peeta, an artist and professional baker, lives right next door… he could have put anything on a cake for you… and your serving this… that’s all I’m saying…
Meanwhile Alice defending herself and also unable to refute Haymitch’s good looks - I doubt he could have made anything that looked better than this 👀
Needless to say - Katniss does not take this well
