The Hidden Suffering of Orihara Izaya

A while back @wawawawawawawawawawawawawa was screaming into the heavens about Izaya having ASPD (antisocial personality disorder) and posted THIS ARTICLE. I read through it the whole time feeling like I was reading an Orihara Izaya character study. While the language is a bit outdated, this article was really interesting to me when I considered it alongside how Izaya's character is written. I wanted to use this article as a lense to look at Izaya, breaking it down and examining what we know is canon about him as well as my own interpretations of him. I want to look at the characteristics of ASPD as outlined by this article and use that to show how Izaya suffers as a direct result of his ASPD. I have been autistic as fuck about this man for 12 years and as such have developed a lot of opinions about him while consuming every bit of media I could find on him (that was in english at least). 

Quotes from the novels are taken from my copies of the books, while quotes from Sunset and Standing Ovation are from translations by Kaede726 and can be found here.

I would also like to formally apologize now because I tried so hard to make this somewhat organized but it just goes off the rails several times because I kept remembering random shit I wanted to add in. Hopefully the places it goes are at least somewhat interesting to you. But anyway with all that said, everyone please feel free to add anything you like to this discussion and I'll be happy to reply especially if you somehow make it through this whole nightmare of an attempted analysis. So strap the fuck in because here we go, motherfuckers.

To Orihara Izaya family were friends just like non-family. But Izaya was suddenly reminded of something that happened back in middle school. Namely, Nakura stabbing Shinra - what you could call the ultimate cause behind what had happened this time. Now that I think of it… It might be the only thing that ever did affect the formation of my personality in a significant way. Remembering the envy and the sense of defeat he had felt back then, he realized that Kishitani Shinra was probably more of a rival than a friend to him. Different from Heiwajima Shizuo, whom he hated, Shinra was probably something he had aspired to be. But as soon as he recalled the way Shinra looked right now he smiled and dismissed the idea altogether. “No way.” In retrospect Shinra, who lived confidently above this world, did invoke some jealousy in him. Yet he was attempting to betray even a friend like that. Not a friend by Izaya’s standards, but a “friend” as defined by most people in the world. He’ll probably be mad at me if he finds out that I went to meet Celty taking the head with me. “Haha!” Izaya couldn’t help but laugh slightly as he pictured his only “friend” by the world’s standards getting mad at him. There is nothing to be afraid of. Shizaya is such a wild ship when you remember that in the canon duration of the LN they only interact a couple of times until the final showdown. Which in most cases would warrant a "nothing burger" when it comes to the idea of shipping them AND YET!! And yet despite hardly ever interacting face to face for most of the story they can never seem to stfu when it comes to bringing the other person up unprompted. And I'm not even exaggerating here. A character can genuinely just be standing there not speaking, and shizaya will feel it's super important to bring up the other person, ask about them and mention how much they hate them like ???? Who tf asked? Why do you guys keep talking about the person you hate? No one said anything you keep bringing the conversation back to that (brainrot lvls of obsession). Also love those moments where someone else will reminisce about their time at raijin and of course shizaya gets brought up again with how intense their rivalry/hatred/situationship was

It's insane because no one even asked for this ship they really just did that on their own,

and they're so intense about it??? Like bro, if I really hated someone, I would not want to see their face or be in the same vicinity as them for more than a second. Much less grin like a maniac and chase after them regularly for ten fucking years.

Even Shinra, their mutual childhood friend, who knew them both so well, who is a man, saw potential in the ship and was like "Well, maybe they could be-" lol excuse me, what?

Then there's that final fight, hoo boy. What happened to "I want to start a war that only I can win so I can be taken to Valhalla and live forever"?

So you've been cooking up this whole conflict for a whole year, and now you're saying you want to die by his hands to prove he's a monster? Bitch you didn't even see him for a whole fucking season.

How did we go from unserious, goofy fights like this

to this

complete with tragic "what could've been" highschool flashbacks in between, and Shinra saying he genuinely wanted them and Celty to be a group of best friends just like Mikado's. Their relationship is so messy but such good writing tbh.

Anyway, this is getting dark. Here's a funny little thing I noticed on a rewatch of season 1.
