It took two whole seconds, the two of them locking eyes before the front door slammed shut, and hard. It was enough to make Bilbo flinch before blinking rapidly at that wooden door in front of him. The redness on his cheeks was morphing from embarrassment to agitation as a few seconds ticked by. After those few moments, the door clicked and began to creep open. Bilbo lifted his gaze, and caught sight of those sinfully blue eyes staring back at him before Thorin’s full frame came into view. The guy looked pale as a sheet, and there was something shaky about him, but it wasn’t for Bilbo to comment on. He was just stuck standing there under the blue-eyed menace’s gaze.  Clearing his throat, Bilbo inched his hands forward, his palms sweaty around that tin pie pan as he forced his lips upwards. It was the type of smile that was reserved for uncomfortable family get-togethers. “Well, that’ll be the second time something’s slammed between us and ended up awkward.” The words had flown out without much forethought, but oozing with the same type of false niceties that he’d normally give Lobelia. The way Thorin’s brows furrowed, and his overall expression darkened spurred something in Bilbo. Something unpleasant.

“Thorin.” Taking the offered hand, Bilbo gave it a small shake, feeling Thorin’s firm and calloused grip against his palm as little sparks danced across his skin. “Bilbo, it’s nice to meet you, Thorin. Can I buy your next drink? Looks like you need it, and just…consider that my appreciation for what you do.” Though their hands were released rather quickly, and Thorin’s eyes rolled rather hard as an unamused grimace took over his face, reaching for his shot glass that had gone untouched due to chatter. It was the same routine every night he worked, wasn’t it? Someone spotted him, tried to make nice with him, and then went for the usual pickup lines of free drinks and yadda yadda. Scowling, Thorin’s eyes narrowed as he wanted to cut this conversation off abruptly as he started sliding out of his seat. “You’re not the first person to try this tonight. I get enough of it at work. I’m not in the mood–” “I’m not…oh! I’m not trying to be forward with you! Just appreciative, I also wanted to…I don’t know, prove to someone that I can hold a conversation with someone outside my circle, but I guess I can’t even do that much.” Or perhaps Hamfast would win the bragging rights for the night. Handsome as this Thorin was and wandering as Bilbo’s thoughts might have been, his intentions were completely innocent. “I’m not good at this, this isn’t my scene at all.” As Bilbo’s eyes dropped, he wished the floor would swallow him whole. A heavy sigh rang louder in his ears than the surrounding music, catching a glimpse of Thorin adjusting more comfortably in his seat out of the corners of his eyes. This indicated that Thorin had the intent to stay where he was, versus fleeing like he had been ready to do. It caught Bilbo off guard to say the least. “Alright, alright. One drink.” The words were affirmative and stern, but Thorin didn’t look quite as uncomfortable or murderous, so that was a bonus.

“When do you need to report backstage?” “Before too long. We should be getting ourselves ready while Ironfoot takes the stage.” Taking another glance at the stage, Thorin came to a halt, a heavy sigh working through his chest as he eyeballed those on the stage. It wasn’t his type of music by any means, but to see how happy they looked, it sparked something in him as he knew his time would come. “What do you think so far?” Bilbo paused, truly mulling over the question brought to him as he gave his head a small tilt. While he had never imagined himself a fan of the harder stuff when it came to music, he had grown quite a taste for it. The fluffy sounding notes and tunes coming from the stage paled in comparison. “I think…I’m quite ready to see Durin’s Desolation in action.” A laugh escaped Thorin’s lips as he leaned over to press a kiss to the top of Bilbo’s head. Of course, he found no small amount of amusement in his boyfriend’s lack of interest in the ‘bops’ from the Greenwood pop stars along the stage. “That’s my guy,” he teased, proud as ever, “I’ve trained you well.” To which Bilbo could only flash a wide grin before tugging Thorin along to look at some nearby merch stalls. There were a handful of those offering piercings, tattoos, and other various things you’d find at a gathering of creatives looking to make a living, and who was Bilbo if not a supportive lover of the arts?

Bilbo Baggins has two great loves: molding young minds and baking. So it comes as a bit of a shock to him when at his nephew’s 7th birthday party a third love is added to the list. A pair of dazzling blue eyes that are constantly looking in his direction. Of course, they could just be looking at Bilbo’s cupcakes - they were outstanding if he did say so himself.

Humming lightly to himself alongside the tunes blasting from a wireless speaker, Bilbo wasn’t sure what prompted his eyes towards the gate leading to his front yard. At first the fond grin that had formed on his lips was similar to the one he wore when greeting his students each day. Then suddenly it wasn’t. While he recognized the two kids marching their way into the yard, it was the fellow they were tugging along with them that had Bilbo rooted to the ground with his mouth agape. Fili and Kili, sons of Dis Durin who had…lost her husband last winter, if Bilbo remembered correctly. This couldn’t be a new man in her life already, could it? Then again, who was he to judge? Swallowing thickly at the implication, Bilbo took another glance towards the exasperated fellow being dragged along through his yard. He looked far too much like Dis now that he was getting a second glance. Perhaps a brother? Or a cousin, perhaps? Whatever it was, Bilbo desperately wanted to know– “Something on your mind, Bilbo?” Prim asked, smacking him square in the chest with a bag of cheese puffs. “It’s not every day you’re standing there looking like someone twisted your tongue into knots.” “I’m–I was just unaware that the Durin boys were invited, it’s a nice surprise.” “Especially the big one there, huh?” Feeling an elbow nudge into his arm, Bilbo was suddenly grateful he had no siblings. This was the type of annoying teasing he could have expected from a brother or sister…but even still, he hadn’t escaped it entirely. “Hardly.”
