Anime North Time!

As you may have guessed by the lack of features for the past month it is once again time for Anime North! This year is a bit more laid back than other years as I will not be participating in any panels, but we will have the kimono display and extra kimono around the Gallery to keep it looking pretty. The theme of the display this year is A Brilliant Brocade of Chrysanthemums 菊花錦繡容彩 A Celebration of The New Emperor with each kimono featuring chrysanthemums of various ages and rendered in a multitude of styles! The other kimono throughout the Gallery will also have a special theme, so try to figure out what it may be! The smaller display this year is about kanzashi and features various types made from different materials that are used for various purposes. Speaking of kanzashi, one of our artists this year is Angel Weber, who is the artist behind Apple Dainty Kanzashi! She will also be doing a kanzashi workshop this weekend, so if you’ve ever wanted to learn how to make kanzashi then this is something you should not miss! We’ll also be having our super popular life size Pokémon display again this year, so if you’re a fan then you’ll definitely want to check them out! One of the featured ‘mons this year is one of my favorites... Mewtwo ^^! Gallery Momiji is located right outside of the Dealer’s Room entrance and is open during the following hours: Friday: 5pm - 10pm Saturday: 10am - 8pm Sunday: 10am - 3pm Please come by and say hi! I promise I won’t bite but would rather love to give you a tour instead ^^!

Anime North Announcements

This is mostly a head’s up for people who are attending the convention, but there will likely be many images floating about later for those of you who can’t attend in person. Either way, please look forward to these events! I’ll be camping out in Gallery Momiji all weekend as that’s the department that I run. This will be our 10th year inside the Toronto Congress Centre and the 10th kimono display! You can find it in Hall D right beside the entrance to the Dealer’s Room. For those who want to see how kimono dressing is done, I’ll be publicly dressing the staff members for the Moonlight Ball on Friday starting at 6pm inside the Gallery. I may also be dressing my staff on Saturday morning and again on Sunday on the stage, so you can come check out some of the crazy kitsuke I manage to come up with on the fly. As for information, I’ll be holding my kimono panel twice this weekend! The first time will be Friday at 8pm and then again on Saturday at 2pm! Both will be taking place inside Gallery Momiji. The panel itself is called  “Kimono: History, Types, and Examples”; as can be guessed by that title, there will be many examples of kimono that you can come up and see for yourself, including some that are 200 years old! So, if you want to see some very old and very interesting kimono up close then this is a chance you don’t want to miss!

The kimono display will be running all weekend in Gallery Momiji and you can take pictures of the kimono this year! Previously we did not allow photography inside the Gallery space, but we’ve relaxed the rules surrounding the exhibits this year. The theme for the kimono display is “Colours of The Rainbow - A Celebration of Change,” with 13 kimono representing a huge stretch of colours and a surprise sub theme (I’ll keep that part a secret for now!). The other main exhibit is going to be GIANT, LIFE SIZED POKEMON SCULPTURES! I am super hyped for this and they are going to be so cool! Our “mini exhibit” that has focused of geimaiko for the past few years is also back! The theme this year is “Famous Flowers: The Legendary Geisha of Japan’s Most Prestigious District” which features an in depth look at some of Gion Kobu’s most famous geimaiko along with their personal uchiwa and images. There will also be maiko kanzashi displayed with each to bring out the flower theme. Finally, I will be doing a panel on shironuri with famous shironuri fashion icon Minori! This will be taking place on Saturday at 3:30pm in the Barton Room (the front panel rooms) of the Toronto Congress Centre. I’ll be starting off the panel by talking about the history of shironuri in Japan. After that we’ll be joined by another surprise guest who will be talking about the parallels of white makeup in Western theatre and such. From there Minori-san will be talking about contemporary shironuri use in Japanese street fashions. It’s going to be really cool (and probably packed) so you may want to arrive early if you want to be guaranteed a seat ^^

What’s That Thing? Part 5

Also known as: Kimono, The Karyukai, and Pokémon! On The Twelfth Day of Fun I present… another question that I’ve bee hanging onto for a few days! It’s a topic that I’ve thought about covering before, so I couldn’t pass up this opportunity! Anonymous asked: “I remember you mentioned recently that you like Pokémon, and I realized something when playing the other day - Lurantis in its ‘resting’ pose reminds me a lot of some of the poses from Kyōmai, where its blades look like furisode sleeves and the way it stands makes its lower half look vaguely like kimono. Thank you for running your lovely blog x” First of all, you’re very welcome! Secondly, it’s not an accident! The addition of kimono and even the karyukai have been present in the Pokémon games almost from the very beginning. The original Gen 1 Red/Blue/Green/Yellow games took place in Kanto, which is actually where Tokyo is, so we didn’t see too much in there except for one main character: Celadon Gym Leader Erika:

It was a bit hard to see in the original sprites, but Erika has always worn a kimono and maintained a close relationship with nature, which is something that kimono and kitsuke aficionados strive for. The first time she’s introduced in the anime she actually looked like this:

image

Image courtesy of The Pokémon Wikia. Erika was posing as the owner of a perfume shop, but here we can see her dressed in a princess-style outfit, complete with beautiful nihongami! It’s not until Gen 2′s Gold/Silver that we really start to see a deeper connection with kimono, but also the introduction of the karyukai! In the original Japanese release of the games the five women who each battle with an eeveelution in Ecruteak City are called “Maiko Han” (まいこはん)!

image

Image courtesy of Bulbapedia. They’re shown to be wearing appropriate nihongami and even darari obi! In the games they were given pretty standard female names: Zuki, Naoko, Miki, Sayo, and Kuni. However, In the anime the girls have names that fit the karyukai quite well: Komomo, Satsuki, Koume, Sakura, and Tamao! For the English release their names were changed to “Kimono Sisters” and trainers known as “Kimono Girls” have appeared in every generation of the game since Gen 2. (Random side trivia: in Pokémon Go, to be guaranteed an Umbreon as an evolution for Eevee if you’ve never obtained one before you can change the Eevee’s nickname to Tamao. In the anime Tamao was the maiko who battled with an Umbreon, and her name translates roughly as “Great Treasure”).

Each girl has a different kanoko color to match their name. In the anime version they do appear to look a bit more like hangyoku than maiko, but it’s pretty good for a kid’s show.

The shoulders of the kimono even have tucks and you can’t miss the bira with the kanzashi! Some of the show’s main characters have worn kimono as well, including Misty and Jessie who dressed up as Heian princesses for a Girl’s Day event:

Image courtesy of Bulbapedia. Froslass was actually an added evolution to an already existing Pokémon, Snorunt. Only female Snorunt can evolve into Froslass, which fits with her furisode-like “sleeves” (they’re technically facial extensions…). What’s even more interesting is her Pokédex entry: “Legends in snowy regions say that a woman who was lost on an icy mountain was reborn as Froslass.” and “It freezes hikers who have come to climb snowy mountains and carries them back to its home. It only goes after men it thinks are handsome.” These entries pertain directly to the legend of the Yuki Onna, who I’ve written about before here. Over in Gen 7′s Sun/Moon we get to see the first Pokémon duo who share kimono traits: Fomantis and Lurantis:

Image courtesy of Bulbapedia. Fomantis may not look like much since it’s still starting out, but its stunning evolution Lurantis is clearly kimono inspired:

Image courtesy of Bulbapedia. Not only is Lurantis’ body shaped to look like he/she (there’s no difference in the game) is wearing a kimono, but its Pokédex entries back it up: “It requires a lot of effort to maintain Lurantis’s vivid coloring, but some collectors enjoy this work and treat it as their hobby.” and “As it slashes into its enemies, it looks like it’s dancing. Its elegant appearance has led some to call it the most glamorous Grass Pokémon.” This shows us that trainers value Lurantis as they would a fine kimono and strive to keep it looking its best. The person who sent in the question mentioned that Lurantis looks as though it’s dancing, which, according to the Pokédex entry, it actually is!   Finally, how can we forget the most famous Pokémon of all? In the anime Pikachu has been shown wearing kimono with hakama while waving fans to cheer on his friends or while in competitions:

In 2017 The Pokémon Company opened up a new Pokémon Center (a store where Pokémon goods are sold) in Kyoto, and to celebrate they released a bunch of merchandise with both male and female Pikachu in kimono. The female Pikachu are actually called ”Maiko Pikachu” too!

Edit:

Anonymous asked: ”I think Oricorio deserves a mention in your Pokémon post ^^ It has four forms, based on different dance styles: Baile, Pom Pom, Pa'u, and Sensu. The Sensu form has long 'sleeves' like a furisode, and it dances with two fans. It definitely made me think of a maiko the first time I saw it, which it why its my favourite Pokémon. :)” Yes, I somehow did miss Oricorio! Its Japanese name, Odoridori, means “Dancing Bird” and one of its forms is definitely worthy of the name “Sensu”!

Image courtesy of Bulbapedia. While the hair may look a bit oiranish, its movements are inspired by geisha. The mysterious women who charm others with their sensual dances (to the outside world) has been personified in this bird, and its Pokédex entries back it up: “This Oricorio has sipped purple nectar. Its elegant, attractive dance will send the minds and hearts of its enemies to another world.” and “This Oricorio has sipped purple nectar. Some dancers use its graceful, elegant dancing as inspiration.” Its feathers definitely resemble kimono sleeves too, making it a very traditional yet elegant bird! So, did I miss anything or is there anything you’d like to add? Please feel free to let me know ^o^!

Getting To Know Me - Part 3

Today is probably one of the last “slow” days I’ll have for the next few weeks, so let’s talk about a fun topic - Pokémon! Yes, I am a huge Pokémon nerd and have been since the original red and blue were released in North America (I was in 6th grade! Also, yes, I got all 151 on my blue version - I got the Mew through a Toys R’ Us promotion). There’s some that I just always like on my team, or have always liked the look of them, so some of my favorites are: Best Eeveelution Umbreon - I own a bunch of Umbreon plush too ^^ Why Way back on original silver my Eevee evolved at night, and as I progressed through to the end game it became one of my favorites for being so versatile. Since then I’ve always had an Umbreon on my team as I find it balances well when I battle against friends. I teach it the weirdest set of moves to keep them on their toes ^^v Best Shiny Milotic! Why Years ago (I think when I had platinum) I got a shiny event Milotic from a friend, and wooooooow did I love that thing! Not only is Milotic a solid fighter, but it’s so pretty!

Best Starters Gen 1: Bulbasaur Gen 2: Cyndaquil Gen 3: Torchic Gen 4: Piplup Gen 5: Tepig Gen 6: Froakie Gen 7: Popplio Why I love me some Bulbasaur; they’re adorable and I own a GIANT plush one. Cyndaquil was just epic in Gold/Silver. I didn’t play Gen 3 until the Ruby/Sapphire releases for the DS, but Torchick is obviously the best (lol). Nothing beat Piplup in Gen 4 (fight me), although Chimchar was good too. Gen 5 was overall kinda underwhelming, but Tepig was cute. Gen 6 Froakie was a damn solid fighter (Greninja!). Gen 7 I’m only on my second play through (I’m still working through Ultra Sun), but I had Popplio first and loved her final evolution (for US I started with a Rowlet).  Other Favorites Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam, Mewtwo, Mareep/Flaafy/Ampharos, Skarmory, Ralts/Kirlia/Gardevoir, Swablu/Altaria, Feebas/Milotic, Tropius, Shellos/Gastrodon, Togepi/Togetic/Togekiss, Rufflet/Braviary, Goomy/ Sligoo/Goodra, Fomantis/Lurantis Why Either through design or power, they’ve all played important parts in my previous adventures. There’s many more, but those are among the ones I’ve really liked. Other Things CONTESTS Why I LOVE me some ribbons and competition! I honestly adore the contests in each version and my favorite Pokémon always end up drowning in ribbons (I’ve had a bunch that had 20+ ribbons in a single version).
