May 27th, 2019: Congratulations to Masako (槇沙子) of Nishimura (西村) in Gion Kobu on the occasion of her misedashi! She is the third imōto of the very successful and popular geiko Makiko (槇子), also of Nishimura, with whom she shares two kanji of her geimei. It was an extremely hot day and Masako was wearing an all season kuromontsuki that even has an extra hiyoku! Maiko and geiko are not allowed to wear ro outfits until June 1st, although the extra layers like the hiyoku, upper inner lining and sleeve lining are often removed during the months before and after summer. However, this change is not performed on kuromontsuki, so the June 1st date is hard set when it comes to formal outfits. Pictured with Masako are all of the current Nishimura maiko and geiko, including: Back row: Okasan Kumiko (玖見子), Asako (亜佐子), Miwako (美羽子), Masako (槇沙子), Mariko (槇里子), and Tomoko (朋子). Front Row: Mihoko (美帆子), Makiko (槇子), Yukako (有佳子), and Mikako (実佳子). I think it’s really nice that all three of Makiko’s imōto (Tomoko, Mariko, and Masako) are all together in the picture! In Gion Kobu the onesan will not wear a kuromontsuki like her imōto, but rather will wear a houmongi for the event. With so many maiko hopefully the Nishimura okiya will continue to grow and prosper! おめでとうさんどす槇沙子ちゃん ^o^! Images are courtesy of Makiko, Kyotoq9, and No Name Misa.
Good News and Bad News
You'll rarely have one without the other, so here’s the latest mix of news: Masako (槇沙子) of Nishimura (西村) in Gion Kobu will debut on May 27th. But Fukutomo (ふく朋) of Horiyae (堀八重) in Miyagawa Cho will be retiring at the end of the month. Masako will be the imōto of the extremely popular and successful geiko Makiko (槇子), where she shares the “槇” and “子” kanji from. Fukutomo has had a very illustrious career and has been among the top earners in her district during her 5 years of apprenticeship. Cafe Roji Usagi will be holding a farewell party for her on the 28th, which you can check out the details for here. It’s sad to see her leave, but we hope that she enjoys her life outside of the karyukai ^^
A New Rhyming Duo!
I finally have better information, so it’s time to announce what I know about the two minarai in Gion Kobu! Both are from Nishimura whose geimei are Asako (亜佐子) and Masako (槇沙子)! Asako will be the imōto of Yukako (有佳子) and Masako will be the imōto of Makiko (槇子)! This is very cute as Yukako and Makiko are known as the YukaMaki combo, so now their imōto could become the AsaMasa pair! Asako’s misedashi will be on May 14th whereas Masako’s will be approximately 1 week later ^^

Tragic News
It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce the passing of Masako (満佐子) of Man (まん) in Gion Higashi. She passed away last week of unknown causes, with her funeral taking place the same week. She was the most senior geiko in her district and the okasan of Man. It seems that the role of okasan will now go to Masami, but that has yet to be confirmed. While her specific debut date isn’t know, we do know that she started sometime around the late 1960s or early 1970s. You can see a picture of some mourners with former geiko Masayo, current geiko Masaki, and maiko Masano here.
