What’s That Thing? Part 14

I really liked this question, so it actually skipped a few to be answered ^^ Anonymous asked: “Maiko Mameyo of Arai was recently photographed wearing a unique Miyako Odori kanzashi I think? Are these usual - can't say I've seen them before? The photo is on Geimei's Tumblr since I saw a question asked about it on there and wondered if you knew anything else about them ^^” First, let’s look at the image being referenced:

Image courtesy of E__m_____ on Instagram. Arai has an absolutely massive catalogue of unique kanzashi that they’ve been using for decades, and this just happens to be one of them. These kanzashi are meant to resemble the props that are used during the Miyako Odori. They’re called Dansen (団扇/だんせん), which is based on a round Chinese fan called Duansyen /Tuanshan (spelled as either 團扇 or 团扇). Over time they evolved into double sided paddles that are split down the middle and covered with cherry blossoms on one side and willow leaves on the other. This split may have been done to look like war fans that were used for signalling on the battlefield. Their complimentary colors definitely give a feeling that they are signaling the trees to bloom! They’re approximately the size of an uchiwa, but are slightly more round. This is what they look like up close:

Image courtesy of Chi_mama_jj on Instagram. Here’s an image of her onesan Mameroku wearing it when she was a young maiko too:

Image courtesy of Honori-e. I’m not sure how long Arai has had this kanzashi but, like many of their others, they’ve probably owned them since at least the early 1990s. They are all beautiful works of art that have clearly been treasured ^^

Thank you for sending them in and I hope that you will continue doing so!  The most popular questions were: -What makes Umechie so special? -How can I tell if a maiko is tying her obiage? -Do you have a favorite documentary on the karyukai? -Is this Toyochiyo and do you know what she does for a living? -How does Mitsuki fit in with the other Tsurui girls? -Miyagawacho Maiko sure have a very unique aesthetic, don't you think so too? If you'd have to pinpoint, what would you say makes their look so unlike the other kagai? -In an earlier ask you've mentioned Hanafusa's "shimmering" kuromontsuki. Did you mean the one with the golden waves, that was worn by Kikusana for her debut? -What 'levels' are there to kimono seniority? -Are those Kyoto geimaiko performing in the video? Are maiko allowed to perform during their misedashi? -From an otokoshi's perspective: Are more experienced maiko and geiko easier to dress? March 7th, 2018: Congratulations to Mameyo (豆誉) of Arai (新井) in Gion Kobu on the occasion of her misedashi! She is the first imōto of Mameroku (豆六), so there are high hopes that she will become a talented dancer like her onesan ^^! おめでとうございます豆誉ちゃん ^o^! Images are courtesy of Ono Komachi Blog.

SURPRISE!

Remember how I mentioned that there would be six new maiko helping with the tea ceremony at the Miyako Odori in Gion Kobu? Well, I finally have news about the new Arai (新井) girl! Her geimei is Mameyo (豆誉) and she is the imōto of Mameroku (豆六)! Even more surprising, her misedashi is March 7th! That’s exactly one week from now ^o^!

The BIG News Post!

Last week I promised the news about another erikae, but I actually have information on not only erikae, but misedashi as well!

Misedashi News

Odamoto (小田本) in Gion Kobu will be debuting another minarai on February 12th named Katsumomo (佳つ桃)! I’m not sure of her onesan at the moment, just her name and date.

There are going to be SIX (6) misedashi in Gion Kobu beginning in late April and going throughout May following the Miyako Odori! They are going to be from Arai (新井), Fukushima (福嶋), Tama (多麻), Tsurui (つる居), and two (2) from Nakagishi (中支志)!

Currently they do not have geimei, but will be assisting in the tea ceremony at the Miyako Odori. It is possible that some may be debuting in March, but right now it’s more likely that it will be after the odori instead of before it. Edit: The Fukushima minarai has now begun her minarai period and will be debuting in March!

Erikae News

Tomitsuyu (富津愈) from Tomikiku (富菊) in Gion Higashi will be having her erikae on May 22nd!

This is a tentative date and may occur a day before or after, but this is the date that she was telling people during Setsubun.

Sad Retirement News (and Some Good News)

It’s not unusual for maiko and geiko to retire at the end of the year as it gives them a quiet exit. However, it’s always a shock not to see them again in January when the new year begins. I’ve consulted with the annual booklet that Gion Kobu hands out to its members and long time customers and the following maiko and geiko have left: Sonoe (その恵) of Kineya (きねや) Sakiko (紗貴子) of Nishimura (西村) Mamechika (豆千佳) of Arai (新井) I think that Mamechika’s departure is a huge blow as she was extremely talented. But, in all of this bad news there is one sliver of good news! Katsuma (佳つ磨) of Odamoto (小田本) has returned to the profession! It seems as though she took a year and a half off for herself, but now she’s back and will be performing again! I updated the various tabs to reflect the changes last night, so for now they’re back up to date. I do plan on releasing a list of all active maiko and geiko of Gion Kobu just so that it can be searched instead of just found on the tab, so please look forward to that ^^

Loss of a Legend

Although this happened back in January it’s only been officially confirmed now as images of the paperwork have finally surfaced. Mameji (豆爾) of Arai (新井) in Gion Kobu has retired from the profession. This likely explains why Mameroku was allowed to have her erikae at what basically amounted to the last minute as Mameji will now be dedicating herself to running the okiya full time.

Someone asked the other day whether Marika/Tsurui’s kanzashi is the same as the one owned by Mameroku/Arai, so here’s images of both girls wearing their chōchin and sakura kanzashi. Although they do look similar and are based on the same design, the biggest differences are: -Mameroku/Arai’s sakura curls underneath the chōchin. Marika/Tsurui’s stops before the bottom of the lantern. -Marika/Tsurui’s has very large white tsunagi dango while Mameroku/Arai’s does not. -Mameroku/Arai’s has a small tassel at the bottom of the chōchin where Marika/Tsurui’s does not.  I hope that this can clear some things up! If you ever want me to do more visual comparisons or take an in-depth look at anything then feel free to request them at any time ^^ The image of Mameroku is courtesy of Sonjamagic on Instagram and the image of Marika is courtesy of Love_Justine on Twitter.
