March 31st, 2017: For most people The Miyako Odori begins on April 1st, but for the past 9 years it’s actually begun on March 31st. This special performance on March 31st is called “Media Day” where photographers from major news outlets and some very lucky and loyal customers can watch the inaugural performance of The Miyako Odori. Media Day was created after the use of photography was banned back in 2007 as it became too distracting to both the geimaiko and other patrons. All visitors can take pictures on this day (although it’s usually suggested that non-news outlets/customers do not take them or sign a waiver to not share them publicly). Oddly enough, photography is not allowed at the special tea ceremony that preludes the show but it will be allowed for all of the other tea ceremonies throughout the month.
