life is a web of both small and large melancholies but it also contains grace and friendship

Decide on hobbies?
I want to do all the things.
I recently started a new hobby! So I can talk about the deciding on a hobby process. For me it was looking at something I had wanted to do for a while (being able to draw) and looking at what held me back (the stress of using up materials in this case.) So I got a digital art pad.
So maybe look at some things that you know you would like to do, find the barrier, and see if there is some alternative that removes that barrier.
Ahhh okay, that sounds like a really good solution! I hope you're enjoying it! ^-^ And thank you!

I know you've gotten a ton of advice on this already, but...
For me, I decide on hobbies based on what I'm feeling at the time, such as what catches my eye and I know will make me happy with minimal frustration.
Painting, for me, is fun when I want to make pretty colors and combine the pretty colors and if you hate a painting, you can just white out the canvas and start again, saving some cost.
Paints and canvases can be very expensive, but my favorite brand Daler Rowney, has very reasonably priced canvases and paints, especially for a beginner. Brushes can also be an expense, but a basic set from a craft store/Walmart/Target shouldn't be too expensive either.
As for knitting or crocheting, more pretty colors, but it is extremely satisfying to do (I crochet, but I imagine knitting is the same). Also can be quite expensive, but the brand Red Heart runs for about six dollars (with tax) a skein and has lots of fun and soft colors and there are plenty of tutorials online to get you started/help you out.
Both are fun options that really soothe the mind. :)
Ohhhh thank you so much for the suggestions! I'll definitely keep those in mind.

Hi! I know it can be really overwhelming to consider all the crafts and how much "equipment" one might need to get started, but as someone who enjoys many, I would say: just start with one, and only get the basic equipment, and don't worry about "being decent" at it; just have fun! If you're looking for an inexpensive hobby to begin with: I highly recommend knitting or crocheting! All you need are two needles (knitting) or one hook (crocheting) and a skein of yarn! That's it! (And maybe a pair of scissors dedicated to cutting yarn tails, since cutting yarn will dull your household scissors very quickly.) There are countless video tutorials on YouTube, so you don't even need to buy a pattern book; you can just start out with learning a couple stitches, and go from there; you don't even need a pattern, because a scarf is just an extra long rectangle, so, tada, knit / crochet a rectangle for long enough, and you have a scarf! ✨ How to begin crocheting righthanded: - Learn how to "cast on" aka make a slip knot (this is also how you start knitting too btw!) - Learn the "chain stitch," aka the base for your fabric - Learn the "single crochet" stitch! Tada! Now you know how to crochet! - Learn how to "cast off" aka "bind off" aka finish your project. [This video uses the double crochet stitch, but the method is the same regardless of what stitch you're using.] Tada! Now you know how to crochet! 🎉 Crocheting lefthanded: - The chain stitch - The single crochet stitch - How to "cast off" aka "bind off" aka finish your project How to begin knitting righthanded: - Learn how to "cast on" - Learn the knit stitch - Learn the purl stitch if you want! Alternate between one row of knit and one row of purl and that's how you get the pretty V's associated with knitted fabric! - Learn how to "cast off" aka "bind off" aka finish your project. Tada! Now you know how to knit! 🥳
Knitting lefthanded: - How to "cast on" - The knit stitch - The purl stitch - How to "cast off" aka "bind off" aka finish your project No pressure of course, but knitting and crocheting are so fun and also very relaxing! Definitely recommend trying it out. ✨ These two hobbies are especially great because you can do them at home, on the bus, at work, in the classroom, at the park...pretty much anywhere you can carry it! Have fun!
Oh, wow, thank you so much!! I really appreciate this. Very helpful. 👀
Quick grocery shopping tip (don't laugh if it seems obvious to you) in case any one here does not know this from their mom, or maybe is facing a tight grocery budget for the first time due to inflation:
When buying any kind of food, it is almost always cheaper in the long run to buy the food with the cheaper price per ounce.
It is legally required that they give you enough information to calculate this, even though it may mean you have to pull out the calculator on your phone.
On the shelf, next to the pack price on the same sticker, the smaller price is usually the price per ounce. (Sometimes it will say "unit price", more on this in a minute.)
Things I always buy this way: breakfast cereal, meat, butter, milk, noodles, chips(!!!) etc. etc.
It is always ok to buy a larger amount of something if the price per ounce is lower that way. This method will also help you determine if you really save money or not.
Chips/crackers/snacks: always do this for chips, since they are notorious for air-stuffed packages but cannot lie about their weight.
Sometimes you will not find a price per ounce on the shelf label. This is when you need your calculator. On every package it is legally required to list the net weight. Find the "NT WEIGHT:" usually near the bottom or the top. There are 16 oz in 1 lb. DIVIDE the total cost by the net weight to get a number that you can compare with the other brands on the shelf.
Some special cases of "unit price" can be calculated the same way to compare such as eggs which are labeled with unit price rather than weight, but don't forget to take the size of the egg into account. (Jumbo>large>medium>small)
And lastly stay the heck away from a box of individually packaged snack sized bags like kiddie cheetos, as their unit price may be given rather than OZ but in any case they are ALWAYS way more expensive than their large bag counterparts.
Be sure to check because you may be surprised about what things look expensive but in price per ounce are actually not that much more expensive than what's considered cheap.

The Four Loves Fairy Tale Challenge: Official Announcement
The Event
The Four Loves Fairy Tale Challenge invites Christian writers and artists to retell or illustrate a fairy tale that features at least one of the four loves:
- Storge: Familial love
- Eros: Romantic love
- Philia: Friendship
- Agape: Self-giving love
Creators will aim to post their works by February 14, 2023, and works will be reblogged to the main Inklings Challenge blog throughout the month of February.
For Writers
Writers participating in the Four Loves Fairy Tale Challenge are invited to retell a fairy tale from a Christian worldview in a way that features at least one of the four types of love. This could involve retelling a fairy tale that features on the chosen type of love or changing a fairy tale that traditionally focuses upon romance, family or friendship to focus on a different type of love. Retellings can be in any genre--fantasy, science fiction, historical, contemporary, etc.--and should retell the original tale, rather than any modern adaptations. There is no maximum or minimum word limit, but because of the short time frame, the challenge is best suited to short works.
For Artists
Artists participating in the Four Loves Fairy Tale Challenge are invited to create artworks related to a fairy tale. Artworks can take any form--illustrations, moodboards, photographs, crafts, etc.--so long as they are related to a fairy tale. Artworks can feature a scene from the traditional tale or adapt the fairy tale to a different setting or genre. Artists who are also writers can also illustrate their own works if they desire.
Posting
Retellings and artwork can be posted to a tumblr blog anytime after February 1, 2023. Writers and artists are encouraged to post their works by February 14, 2023, but works can be finished and posted after that date. Works will be shared to the main Inklings Challenge blog until the final deadline of February 28, 2023.
All stories and art will be reblogged and archived on the main Inklings Challenge blog. To assist with organization, creators should tag their posts according to the following guidelines.
- Mention the main Challenge blog @inklings-challenge somewhere within the body of the post (which will hopefully alert the Challenge blog).
- Tag the story #inklingschallenge, to ensure it shows up in the Challenge tag, and make it more likely that the Challenge blog will find it.
- Tag the type of love that is featured in the work: theme: storge, theme: eros, theme: philia, and/or theme: agape
- Tag the fairy tale that is being retold or illustrated within the work.
- For writers, tag the completion status of the story: #story: complete or #story: unfinished
And that’s the Four Loves Fairy Tale Challenge! Any questions, comments or concerns can be sent to this blog, and I’ll do my best to answer them.
I’ve been struggling with finding time and motivation to even get started. Part of me wants to do one long story, 28 chapters for 28 days. The rest of me isn’t as confident.
I honestly dunno what to do. I had even drawn up a “table of contents” and everything.
I dunno, maybe I should just do smaller, individual stories and shelve the long fic for another time.
i think it doesn't matter if you fail. it matters that you tried something ambitious and wanted to stretch yourself creatively and you gave it a shot.
it doesn't matter if you don't get the fic finished during the month or even at all, so long as it's something you want to write. push yourself and go for it. start wherever you want in the story - the beginning doesn't always have to be the first thing you write - and just try
Prompt #655
“This is your home, and it will always be your home,”
Imagine your OTP is from a warm place and they go on vacation to somewhere cold for the holidays to experience snow for the first time.
Bonus: They get snowed in and decide that's enough snow for a lifetime.
Bonus 2: For them, driving in a snowstorm was 0/10, would not recommend.
