duke/audry (aubry? the haven girl.): singer x fan au?

Avatar

He sees her face from the stage-just one woman in a crowd of thousands singing his song-and the world stops. It's not her looks, though he's not oblivious enough to deny that she's stunning, but something else, something that cuts right through him.

While most of the crowd is grinning ear to ear, clapping along to the upbeat music, her eyes shine too bright, like she's barely holding back tears (like she hears past the music, to the lyrics he'd written in a fit of heartbreak, to the pain he's hidden under drum beats and guitar riffs).

There's a moment-just a moment-where she sees him watching her. Her eyes widen, and she stares back, soft and uncertain.

Then she catches herself, straightens, and gives a dry smile, shaking her head. Her walls are up fast, but not fast enough; he's seen her. She's as broken, as lonely as him, and just as guarded.

He has to meet her. He has to.

duke/audrey: sit down, sit down, I'll make you dinner.

Avatar

"Sit down, sit down, I'll make you dinner," he says as soon as she walks through his door. She looks battered and exhausted in that distinctly Haven way, the way that tells him in a heartbeat that she's battled the Troubles and once again survived (always, he worries, but so far, she's always survived).

If he were Nathan, he'd gather her up in his arms, press kisses to her face, and whisper all his assurances (not that Nathan has been brave enough to do that since her return, but Audrey would let him; she'd never let Duke), but he cannot, so he falls back on what he knows: cooking for her, caring for her, and putting the pieces back together.

To his surprise, she doesn't sit down, just looks at him, like she's staring right through him.

"Audrey?"

"There was a Trouble today." Her voice is steady, though she's impossibly pale. "Everything was different. Everyone was different. Except me."

That's the way it always goes, isn't it? "What about me?" He covers his nerves at her answer with a playful grin. "I wasn't too different, was I? Please tell me I wasn't a cop again."

She gives a little laugh (weaker than he'd like, but something, all the same). "No, not a cop." She pauses, just for a second. "My husband."

It's a blade through his chest, and he looks away quickly to hide the worst of his reaction. It's just... After everything they've been through, why is she telling him this? She knows how he feels about her, and-and she chose Nathan, and that's fine, he can accept that even if Nathan isn't ready to accept the new her, but-

Her hand lands on his shoulder, and he flinches, half-wondering when she approached. "Duke..."

"Well, that's great, Aud. Lucky him." He forces a smile, turning to face her. "What can I get you to eat? Fish? Crab? I know it's late, but maybe some waffles wouldn't be a bad-"

"Duke."

Some part of him hates how, even after all these years, she can fix him in place with a single word. "Yeah?"

"Thank you. For everything." She leans forward, brushing her lips against his cheek, and he closes his eyes (she cannot see, he cannot burden her with what he feels, and-)

When her lips first land on his, he thinks it's an accident. It's soft, tentative, completely unlike Audrey. But then she grows more sure, kissing him firmly, and he cannot help but respond, burying a hand in her hair. After Colorado, he never thought he'd have another chance to do this, and though this may well be his last one, he's going to make the most of it.

At last, she pulls away, and he keeps his eyes closed, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

"Listen," she starts, and his heart pounds in his chest. "Why don't I make you dinner?"

Against his will, his eyes fly open. "What?"

She actually giggles, which, first of all, is unfairly cute, and second of all, definitely isn't the patented Audrey Freak Out he was expecting. "You're always taking care of me," she points out, "And I feel like... I don't thank you enough. So why don't you let me make you dinner?"

Now is not the time to deflect with humor. He knows that. And yet, when he opens his mouth, the only thing that comes out is, "No offense, Audrey, but I've seen your cooking."

She huffs in mock offense, but her smile doesn't fade, and she's still unfairly close. "I can cook."

It's as natural as breathing, falling back into their familiar banter. "Right."

"I can!"

"Maybe-" He forces himself to take a leap, knowing full well she could pull back (like she has so many times before) and let him crash helplessly to the ground. "Maybe we could cook something together?"

Her smile lights up the shop. "Yeah, I'd like that."

kate/duke: so are we like, a thing?

"So are we like, a thing?" She asks, settling on the ground beside him and nudging his shoulder with hers.

He chuckles, nudging her back. "That's really want you want to talk about right now? We just stopped the apocalypse, you know?"

"Yeah, and you kissed me."

"I did." He grins. "Don't remember you complaining, though."

"Does it sound like I'm complaining? I'm clarifying."

"Clarif-" He shakes his head, eyes dancing. Rather than finish his sentence, though, he simply turns, brushing her lips with his. “Does that clarify things any?”

“Nope.” But she can’t stop her own smile.

“Seriously? You’re gonna make me say it?”

“Yup!”

“Fine.” He wraps an arm around her, and she leans into his side, resting her cheek above his heart. Today was close-too close-and hearing his steady heartbeat is going a long way toward soothing her frazzled nerves. “Yes. We’re a thing. Happy?”

It’s a half-sarcastic question, but her answer is sincere enough to surprise them both: “Yeah. I am.”

AN: An extra scene between Audrey and Duke at the end of 2x01 (ao3

Audrey liked staying late at The Gull when Duke was closing. Usually she helped out, she enjoyed staying busy and talking to just him, when they were both too tired for games. Lazy flirting and bad jokes and Duke convincing her that she had to listen to just one more song. The ritual of it helped her relax, even after a particularly grueling today.

She also hoped it served as payment for all the times she and Nathan asked for his help. She should probably work on her thank yous.

Today, she didn’t even sweep.

“Are you going to tell me who she is?” Duke came over to where she stood, leaning on the wall and gazing down at her.

Audrey had spent the entire day figuring out who this woman was and now she had to figure her own self. Her head was spinning in circles. “She’s Audrey Parker.”

He shifted towards her, and his voice was sure and steady. “You’re Audrey Parker.”

Despite knowing he was wrong, hearing the words from Duke helped ground her. This was another part of the Troubles. And she understood Troubles. Because surely nowhere else would have problems like these.

She tried to hold herself still, not wanting Duke to see how shaken up she really was. “That’s what I thought.” The words stuck in her throat. She could barely say them but she needed to hear what Duke would say. ”We talked. She is Audrey Parker.” She turned away from him and walked to the bar where she could sit. She didn’t want him to see her cry.

Duke followed behind her, standing so close.“And that makes you…” She wanted to pull him into a hug and never let go because maybe she didn’t know who she was but she liked who she was with him, with Nathan, here in Haven.

She tilted her head away from him, staring blankly at the bottles across from her. “The thing I had to tell you. The other day?”

Duke placed his hand lightly on the space between her shoulders. “Yeah?”

Audrey took a deep breath and sighed. “I’m Lucy Ripley.”

“Ah.” She looked up and saw he had ducked his head down, and he was smiling.

“You knew.” Anger spiked in her until Duke started rubbing her back gently.

“No, but it makes sense.” His voice was so steady, so calm and reassuring.

They say in silence, and Audrey leaned into Duke, his arms sliding around her, holding her loosely.

“Nathan thinks she’s a fake. That she’s Troubled. But it’s me. I’m -” She didn’t really know how to finish. It was a Trouble, right? She was Troubled because in Haven it always came back to the Troubles.

But it didn’t feel like a Trouble.

“Nathan is a good friend.” She pressed into him and felt the rumble of his voice now that her head rested on his chest.

“And you?” Duke had always been there for her, never left her alone when she asked. Wasn’t that what made a good friend.

“I’m a bad friend. Always have been.”

“Oh, that’s not true.” She looked up to meet his eyes. He smiled.

“But if you were Lucy Ripley and Audrey Parker is someone else, maybe you are someone else entirely.”

“But who is that, Duke? Who am I?”

“I think you get to decide.”

Duke kissed the top of her head and she sat there, contemplating who she would be tomorrow.

Duke/Evi for the sentences?

She wakes in a hospital, aching to her bones, jerking so suddenly that she does not notice the hand curled around hers until it is too late; Duke's eyes shoot open, and he manages-barely-to keep from falling completely off-balance.

"Duke... You're alive," she breathes, staring at him in awe, horrifying images of Wade Crocker, a monster who called himself Croatoan, and Duke sacrificing himself for Haven still lingering desperately in her mind.

He looks at her like he isn't altogether sure she hasn't lost her mind. "Yeah, well, you're the one who just got shot," he mutters, and beautiful realization dawns: Everything after that was just a dream.
