"I suppose I'm...trying to ask you out on a date."
Vanessa smiles, but there's something in her eyes that makes Hermann's stomach drop.
"Of course, if you don't want-"
"I do!" She says, stepping closer. "I really do, Dr. Gottlieb. But I have a show tonight, and after that, I'm going out to dinner with a few of the girls, and I really doubt you want to tag along with me all evening."
If it's with you, he thinks, I would. I do. But he can't just say something like that. So he merely swallows, trying desperately of a way to brush this off without making it seem like a big deal.
"If...You do..." Vanessa starts. She hesitates, then continues, "You could."
"I do." The words aren't his, can't be his, because he isn't that sort of person. He's not the sort to run around after a girl all evening just to spend time with her. That is a page straight out of Newt's handbook.

"Oh, that's- That's great." Her smile grows, all the way up to her eyes, and Hermann suddenly realizes that he very well might be that sort of person.
