“They’re dead, aren’t they?” Her voice shakes, but she swallows back the tears. Her world has turned on its head, and she has to concentrate on her next step.

The man in front of her is military through and through, but his eyes hold no shortage of compassion. “In this timeline, yes,” he agrees, and she frowns.

“This… Timeline?” 

He hesitates a moment too long. “I’m a time traveler,” he says finally, and she glances around, scanning for the closest escape route. “I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out: We can save them. Lucy, Wyatt… Maybe even the world, if we’re lucky.” 

Her sister.

His friend.

She refuses to even think about the world. 

“Got a plan?”

“Even better.” Now, he grins. “I’ve got a team.”

One of the earliest lessons a mother teaches her child is this: Don’t go anywhere with strangers. But Amy is not a child anymore, and she has not listened to her mother in a long time.

“Let’s go.”
