And here are the other two illustrations I did for the @reforgedzine! I've been wanting to do matching art nouveau illustrations for these two for a long, long time and I'm very happy I finally got a reason to do it! I really like how these turned out! :D

Also, the leftover sale for the zine has now started! So go to the website if you're interested in buying one of the zines! And you can find the AO3 collection for all the amazing fics here :D

This is one of the illustrations I did for the @reforgedzine that I can finally show you all! And yes, it's my favourite — warm colours, soft lighting, and tooth-rotting fluff. Plus some really impressive metal texturing, if I do say so myself.

Also, there's a leftover sale that starts on the 10th of February, so head on over to the website if you're interested in buying one of the zines! And you can find the AO3 collection for all the amazing fics here :D

Q-Fics: To Market, To Market

@walburgablack  Steve, Sam, Bucky.  Foodieverse.  Farmer’s Market.

“Give me your wallet.”

“What?” Bucky scowled at Steve.  “Fuck you.  No.”

Steve held out his hand.  “Wallet,” he said.  “Let’s go, Buck.”

Sam glanced from Steve to Bucky and back.  “Is…  Is this a thing we’re doing here?” he asked.  “Or just your garden variety stickup?”

“It’s a pact,” Steve said, his hand still hanging in midair.  Bucky tried to duck around him, and Steve stepped in front of him.  “You promised.”

“I was drunk,” Bucky said, doing his best to shuffle across the sidewalk without meeting Steve’s eyes.

“Bullshit,” Steve said.  “Your wallet.”

“You can have mine, if that makes this conversation end,” Sam said, reaching for his back pocket.

“You can have his,” Bucky parroted.

“I don’t want his,” Steve said, his voice stern.  “He’s not going to empty his checking account buying artisanal horseradish.”

“Buying what?” Sam asked

“Oh for fuck’s sake, it was ONE TIME,” Bucky said.

MCU Bucky Barnes

So here’s the thing.

I’m a costume designer by trade, and one thing that I actually really love about Captain America: The Winter Soldier (okay, among the things I love) is the costume design and the rhetorical value given to the clothes and, well, costumes in this movie.

For example - when Sam and Steve have their heart to heart on the bridge that ends with Sam saying “but he doesn’t even know you” and Steve saying “he will” before going to steal his old uniform - the one Bucky last saw him in when he was Bucky. There are some other great costume points in this movie, actually a LOT of them (costumes, not wigs, don’t at me because I KNOW).

But one thing that has always stood out to me, and not in a good way, is the “I’m with you til the end of the line” flashback.

Now, here’s the thing, it’s not JUST about the clothes. We’re in MCU verse, so it’s MCU canon - obviously, the Steve and Bucky duo is drastically different in Marvel comics canon so - and Bucky starts this scene by saying his folks wanted to give Steve a ride to the cemetery.

Which is super cool and nice. So one, we know Bucky’s dad is still alive - and his mom, but two, we know they have a car.

So this is supposed to be when Steve is around 16? So it’s… 1936 (according to MCU wiki it totally is)

@destinaf : I know I know I know!  The flashback scene is crazy-making, but I think the OP’s wanked it pretty well!  If Bucky’s folks own motorized transport, it really has to be because of some business purpose; dad drives a cab or whatever, or has a truck for hauling. You just wouldn’t have a car at this time even if you WERE doing well; it doesn’t make sense in the space. It is also possible the the “lift” meant that Bucky’s family would have taken Steve with them in a hired car or taxi, which is more plausible then them owning one. That said, the scene is clearly meant to convey that Bucky is in every way better off than Steve, which I think is supported elsewhere in the text and which makes what happens to him all the more terrible; everything about MCU Bucky suggests that he was someone’s golden boy, IMO, and that’s usually how I write him; as the eldest of four he would have ruled the roost. (Look at how sharp he is in his uniform!) Meanwhile yes, Steve should absolutely have a black armband or something to suggest mourning–IMO what Steve is wearing is downright disrespectful for a funeral, and maybe it’s the only thing he owns but it doesn’t look shabby enough, really, IMO, for that to be the case. It’s just nowhere near formal enough and the colors are too bright. And where is his HAT? Where is everyone’s HAT?  This scene would be 100 percent better if everyone were wearing hats and chain-smoking, yes, even Steve, asthma be damned, but hey, you know, nobody asked me. :P

Oh, oh!  While I’m here, and tagging onto this because y’all are likely to be history peeps, I was just on a plane and I saw, which I’d somehow missed, Peter Jackson’s WWI documentary from last year where he’s colorized and also fixed, framed, Foleyed and motion-matched, all this WWI footage and it’s just astonishing, y’all–or it was to me.  It’s called They Shall Not Grow Old and the trailer is below. (Warning, it might make you cry. It made me cry.  Real injury, real death so, take care of yourself.) But if you can stand it, it’s worth watching.

do you ever think about how perfectly steve, bucky, and sam typify the 3 big wars america’s fought in over the past century?

steve is the soldier who fought in world war 2. he’s the tail end of the glory and honor of war. his reasons for fighting are clear cut, moral, as far as he can tell. but the weapons used are too deadly, too fatal for glory and honor, really. there’s the attempt to treat enemy combatants with respect, with honor, all while killing them quick than has ever been possible before. there’s the unease of the shift from the old style of fighting to the new. there’s the tiredness that only comes from a second global war in only two decades. there’s the closure that comes from unprecedented total destruction. the thought of “maybe now we can go home. maybe now we can build lives like our parents, those of us that are left.”

bucky is the soldier who fought in vietnam. he’s the one that couldn’t dodge the draft, that couldn’t evade the fight no matter how hard he tried. he’s the one who followed the orders he had to, and rebelled against all the others. his uniform was askew, more civvies than not. he didn’t look a soldier, and he didn’t fight like one either. he didn’t know why he was fighting, who he was fighting. he saw too many innocents die by the hands of his comrades, of himself. he felt agent orange burn his lungs, saw orphans crying in the streets. he came home, the rat-a-tat of machine guns echoing in his ears, always. he disembarked a plane, and was spat on by anti-war protesters. he couldn’t even be angry– he agreed with them. he participated in the winter soldier investigations, confessed what he’d been forced to do, and that almost abated the weight on his shoulders. almost.

sam is the soldier who fought in afghanistan. the modern soldier, with just as much shit as the rest of them. the difference is, where steve was greeted with celebrations and bucky was greeted with vitriol, sam is overlooked, forgotten. he suffers in silence, expected to endure without protest. sam copes, but not all vets are able to do the same. afghan war vets are the ones who take their own lives in droves, the unacknowledged, unknown aftershocks from an invasion founded on half-formed ambitions from men in suits who’d never have to bear the real burden. sam is the modern day vet, unknown, unseen, unthanked.

So is Nat the Cold War? People don’t see a soldier when they look at her, because she really isn’t, just like the cold war was never really a “war”. Nat is the spy on the run, the power never fully unleashed, the constant sense of fear that there is no backing down, no running– there are no vets of the cold war, but there are always the living casualties.

nailed it

when the mcu tries to gently Just Good Pals steve and bucky i want to laugh at them because, like. they were the ones who structured their arc, from the very beginning, as a story about leaving a plucky sweetheart behind in the states when you ship out. it could have been lifted wholesale from practically any wartime romance filmed between 1940 and 1950. “i just wish they’d take me into the army too– i’d go with you, show that fuhrer a thing or two– just promise me you’ll take care!”  “darling, don’t worry, you can do your part right here at home– it’s ever so important to the war effort!” it’s the theme of fucking “tender comrade” and “since you went away” and “mrs. miniver” and i could go on and on

the part where steve gets turned into a tall dangerous hillshire farms beef log is the surprising science fiction twist; but the part where he grumps about being Left Behind by a uniformed hottie is 1000% period-accurate romantic dramedy that could have been screenwritten by david o. selznick. i’m sorry mcu i don’t make the fucking rules. this is just how it is. give them their v-e day kiss already and let me rest

also THEY are the ones who put a searching-for-romance subplot in Winter Soldier where Steve says he just can’t find anyone with “shared life experience” 30 minutes before his lifelong best friend who is also a super soldier and was also frozen and also missed the last 70 years comes back from the dead

like what the fuck did they think they were trying to convey there

23. Nothing good happens past 2am (wrong number)

“What?”

Steve wasn’t a grumpy person by nature, but when his phone rang at 3:45 am the night after he’d been up for 30 hours finishing a window display in his shop that he just couldn’t get right, he was inclined to be a little growly.

“Rhodey?” the voice on the other end of the line asked after a slight pause. “You don’t sound like Rhodey.”

“What the hell is a Rhodey and how am I meant to sound like one?”

The voice gave a slightly strangled laugh. “Rhodey is my best friend. I thought this was his number.”

Despite himself, Steve seemed interested in this now and he reached out for the bedside light. “It’s not.”

“Clearly.”

Steve chuckled at the sarcasm. “How does this even happen in this day and age?” he asked, rolling over and settling back against his pillows. “You’re meant to save numbers under contacts so that this doesn’t happen.”

There was a beat of silence and Steve’s brow furrowed. “Hello?” He pulled the phone away from his ear and squinted at the too-bright screen to check if it was still connected. “Are you still there?”

“I got mugged.”

The stranger’s words were muffled, but Steve still heard them. He bolted upright in his bed and cursed. “What? Are you okay? What did they take? Did they hurt you?”

“Wow. For a stranger, you seem very concerned.”

personally I like to think steve’s birthday isn’t actually July 4th but someone asked him when his birthday was when he was doing his little show tour thingy and he just said it as an accident and/or a panic response in a bid to seem even more patriotic and everyone believed him and now it’s like 100 years later and he’s too deep in the lie to back out now bc he knows all the avenger’s would fucking publicly roast him if he admitted july 4th wasn’t actually his birthday- like he would literally never live that down- so he lives his life in fear that some bitch ass historian is gonna find his birth certificate and expose him

avengers: happy birthday, steve!

bucky, eyes narrowing: what the fuck your birthday isn’t until-

steve, holding back tears: shut up

Bucky tries to hand him a birthday card one cold December day, and Steve tackles him out a window before anyone else can see what he’s holding
