RinHaruWeek is over!

The third official RinHaruWeek has (sadly) come to an end!

We’d like to thank everyone so much for participating, reblogging and liking the submissions, and cheering from the sidelines!

We trust you had tons of fun and a great time with us this year (we know we did!), and hope you will join us in 2017 as well!

Right now, we do not have a set date for the fourth edition of the event yet, but we will make sure to let you know way ahead of time - as soon as we have more information.

As usual, even though the event is technically “over”, we will keep reblogging and accepting late submissions, so please don’t stress out if you didn’t manage to complete your entry yet!

Thank you for being with us!  With much love,  The RinHaruWeek Team.

See you next water time~~!

So hypothetically, do you think Rin and/or Haru could beat Micheal Phelps?

Avatar

We know their best times in canon already, and I believe someone ( @matsuoka-lin ?) figured out that the times were good enough without any real training that, once they actually started training professionally, then yes they could beat him.

There are lots of “if"s though, like which strokes/races they’d have the best chance of beating him in and which ones he clearly excels at.

I’m pretty sure several people have talked about this–anyone have any input? :D I love this stuff XD

AAAH! This post literally has my name all over it…!! *grin!*

This screencap is from Free! ES episode 1! It shows Rin & Haruka’s score(s) after they tied and set a new tournament record. While it’s debatable whether or not we’re actually meant to be able to read the scores… It sure looks like the board says 50.0-something. I’m going to go with 50.09, personally. (Note: Kyoani has really put a lot of research into this show. They went to motherf*cking Australia just for a single episode, you know? You can’t tell me these numbers are random. Nope. No way.)

Haruka is staring at the scoreboard in… surprise… or whatever you want to call it… because, while racing Rin, he broke his own personal record. We know this because Gou tells him so afterwards:

To top things off, Rin says this in Free! ES episode 6:

Now, I’ve got to admit that the significance of all of this was lost on me for a long time. I didn’t think it was that impressive. I even thought Haruka might’ve completely blown his chances of getting scouted altogether by quitting halfway through his race in Free! ES episode 9 — and that he’d really need someone to put in a good word for him before going pro through a backdoor type of thing.

But, let’s look at the qualification times for the Olympic Games in London 2012. For the 100M Freestyle there were two ways to qualify: by the “A” time (48.82), or the “B” time (50.53). The “A” qualification allowed countries to send in  meeting two swimmers, while the “B” side allowed them to send one swimmer.

If that 50.09 is a correct reading, this would mean both Haruka & Rin already qualified for the Olympics in the 100M Freestyle. Of course, they’d have to have set that 50.09 at a FINA-approved event — during a specific time-frame. For London, this was 1 March 2011 to 3 July 2012 . And they’d still have had other Japanese swimmers to compete with (from what I understand, that competition would’ve happened at the JAPAN SWIM event in April).

Here are the 100M Freestyle results from the JAPAN OPEN for 2012:

Going by this, Haruka & Rin wouldn’t have made it with the times from Free! ES episode 1. What about after they’ve been training at a proper university-level for an entire year, though…? ;)

Here’s the thing: thanks to the very last scene in Free! ES episode 13, we know they do actually make it. Specifically to Rome in 2009. As the only two swimmers in the 100M Freestyle (presumably that’s the event we see them in).

FYI: I’m basing all of this on the confirmation we recently got that Free! is set before 2008. Considering the shots of them competing in Rome, I’m guessing they both graduate in March 2008 — and make the National Team in 2009.

For completeness, here are the 2009 results:

I’m 100% convinced Kyoani is fully aware of these times. They clearly didn’t pull that 50.0-something out of thin air, IMO. So. In order for Haruka & Rin to have made it to Rome, they’d have had to preform better than 49.08. Shave off one second in their first year at university? I’m pretty sure they can do that. And then some. (If you want to know how they might’ve done in Rome, you can always have a look at the results here!)

If you ask me, all of the things mentioned in this post explain just why so many scouts are after Rin & Haruka in Free! ES. These two hadn’t even graduated yet and they were already setting times that’d qualify (one of) them for the Olympics. It’s pretty impressive stuff. Of course they’d have a whole bunch of scouts after them!

ANYWAYS. To get back to the original question: I do believe that with proper training and a little bit of luck, Rin & Haruka could theoretically beat Phelps — who set his personal record of 47.51 in Beijing 2008. Maybe by 2012? (He didn’t compete in the 100M Freestyle in Rome 2009 or in London 2012, though. They’d have to compete with him in another event. Or in Rin’s case: butterfly.)
