Some stuff in All Out!! that differentiates it from other sports anime/manga
((I really want to elaborate on this but I’ll try to keep this brief bc of slow internet connection))
1. First of all, All Out!! has something that most sports anime/manga do not have (dare I say no sports anime/manga actually has that at all), and that thing is body diversity. Some visual examples:
See, usually fat characters in sports anime/manga (or in any media, really) are just there for fat/food jokes, as the funny characters who aren’t very important. But not in All Out!! In All Out!!, they are important, crucial even. They are strong, they are intelligent, serious, attractive, strong-willed, intimidating, sexy (look at my boy Hikaru, seriously it’s the first time I’ve seen a fat character portrayed as sexy, I’m in love)
And another thing, those characters aren’t just chubby, they aren’t “squishy“, they are downright fat and big and I lovE THEM LOOK AT MY BOY HIROTA HE COULD LITERALLY TACKLE ME INTO ANOTHER DIMENTION AND I’D THANK HIM–
Yeah, anyway, body diversity, body positivity
2. One of the characters is an orphan and lives with his abusive, potentially homophobic brother. Yeah, you don’t usually see that in other sports anime/manga. Usually, the big bro in sports anime/manga is either supportive or a bit of a jerk, he doesn’t emotionally abuse his little bro, guilt trip him, or ask him if he’s had sex with one of his closest (male) friend because of how close they are (I actually made an entire post about it here)
3. You know that scene in sports anime/manga where a character starts disliking the sport they’re practicing and thinks of quitting but eventually comes back (think of Haikyuu, with the second years trio)? Well, the same thing happened in All Out!! Except the guy didn’t come back.
Though as you can see, he really didn’t hate the club. He just couldn’t take it anymore, he was tired, he just couldn’t do it. Actually, keeping up with the club would have surely had a terrible effect on his health.
And I love how they treated this. All Out!! showed us that it’s okay to give up. That it’s not worth continuing something if it’s gonna fuck you up in the end. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad person, it doesn’t mean you’re weak, it doesn’t mean you’re worthless, it just mean you’re human. You have things you can do and others you can’t, and that’s it. Giving up is okay.
And this is honestly so refreshing, because in sports anime/manga, it’s always “Keep going!“, “Never give up!“, “Work harder!“
It’s never “You can stop if you can’t do it”, and this is honestly so important
Also, the team (esp the captain) did try to hold him back, but ended up understanding what was the best for him, so they let him go, but not without a comfort hug from the captain to tell him “It’s alright, we understand, please keep supporting us”
4. The captain is an actual maiden.
No seriously. Sometimes he’ll be this huge, buff, intimidating guy who could probably kill you with a tackle
And the next he’s just like
“Umm dude can you stop clasping ur hands like that it’s kinda gay”
“?????? Ummm but i’m a fucking princess??? Sorry I don’t make the rules”
This boy is so fucking honest, so determined, so dedicated to his club. He loves rugby, he loves his teammates, he’s ready to do anything for his team to achieve victory. But he’s also so humble. He’s the type of guy who won’t even celebrate a victory because he’s not used to it?? He also tries to be intimidating but would never, ever look down on someone, because he’s like that, because he respects people, because he’s a good boy
But also he??? deliberately styled his hair like that to look intimidating?? He likes the color pink?? His phone wallpaper is a pink sakura??? He wears shirts with flowers on them?? He?? LOVES SWEETS??? LIKE THIS BOY WOULD LITERALLY KILL SOMEONE FOR A MACAROON?? He also cries A LOT??? HE CRIES WHEN HE’S HAPPY HE CRIES WHEN HE’S SAD HE CRIES WHEN HE’S ANGRY??? PLEASE PROTECT MY BIG BUFF INTIMIDATING SON HE’S ONLY 17 AND GOT OFFENDED WHEN HIS COACH OFFERED HIM TO TRY SOME BEER
HE’S LITERALLY THE BEST CAPTAIN IN SPORTS ANIME/MANGA HISTORY Y’ALL???
5. Also, not very important (it’s more for fanservice than anything) but yknow how Haikyuu!! is famous for the character’s thighs? And Free! and KnB for their pretty boys? Yeah? Well
We’re also pretty good there too
Yeah so it’s getting late so i’ll end this here, but I just wanted to make this because the fact that All Out!! is getting so little attention it pretty saddening tbh, and I was hoping to maybe get some people interested. If you’ve got some more reasons as to why All Out!!’s an amazing anime/manga, please feel free to add to this post
To conclude: a determined mushroom son
