Hi Tumblr! Long time no see!

I’m excited to share the product of my absence!  For the past year, my thesis partner and good friend Esteban Bravo and I have been developing a computer animated short film, “In a Heartbeat,” for our senior thesis project at Ringling College of Art + Design. We are launching this Kickstarter to help cover the costs of hiring a professional composer and sound designer for our film!

“In a Heartbeat” follows an insecure middle school boy who has yet to come to terms with his sexuality. When he crosses paths with the most popular boy in school, his heart pops out of his chest to go after the boy of his dreams. Please visit the Kickstarter page for more development, information, and production artwork on the project!

We are currently mid-production, about to wrap on animation and begin lighting, rendering, and compositing the film, but we need YOUR help to make this film the best that it can be!  Any contribution helps, be it a donation or simply sharing the video and spreading the word!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! This film has been a true labor of love for us both and I am so excited to share the finished film with you this Spring!

CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW CUTE BABY CHRIS WAS?

There’s a long meta here regarding Chris and his relationships with the other skaters, but I’m too tired and too wound up over VICTUURI BEING CANON that I can’t even begin to put words together. Tomorrow I’ll probably read a fantastic meta analysis of this that I shall reblog and say THIS, while throwing confetti. I really do like Chris, autoerotic ice skating and all.

The thing that struck me this episode about Chris is how in love with Victor he is. It might be an idolization, but there’s still an infatuation there. I think Chris is meant to be a foil to Yuri and to show why Victor chose Yuri instead of continuing to skate and “belong” to everyone else.

Chris’ style of eros is not “mature,” it’s a demand for attention, specifically, Victor’s attention. This is  more specific statement on their skating styles, but since this show is about love and Chris thought about how Yuri’s “innocent” eros had no chance of keeping Victor against his “mature” eros, I’ll use this to expand on my point with their styles of the seduction of Victor.

Victor is used to people demanding and begging for his attention. He’s hot, he’s a brilliant skater, he’s very popular, and many people find him to be their inspiration for skating in the first place. We see in this episode that it’s why Chris pushes himself so hard, and we’ve seen that he’s who Russian Yuri aspires to be. But for Victor, who has seen the best skaters in the world time and time again, this is all background noise. I’m sure he forgot his promise to Russian Yuri in terms of creating choreography for him because he gets requests like that a lot. Hell, he probably doesn’t even remember the above exchange with Chris because that, too, has happened so many times. So it takes more than just being the best to attract Victor’s attention, and, in fact, Victor told us what it takes: Yuri’s ability to move with the music. Not just move in time, but to really feel it, to sink into the notes, the swell, to embody the language and emotion of the music you’re skating to. It takes a routine to an entirely different level when you’re watching someone who believes so much in the story they’re telling with their routine, that you, the audience, picture it as well. Yuri has the ability to make his performance transformative, and that’s what Victor was drawn to. Remember when Victor was scolding Yuri mentally for thinking too much during a routine? Think too much, and you won’t be able to really lose yourself in the performance and it comes off stiff.

With Chris, his performance first performance was a seduction, yes, but an aggressive, demanding one. There was a lot of sticking his butt out, ass grabbing, twerking, very in-your-face movements meant to shine ten thousands spotlights on his ass. He says that Yuri can’t compete with him, that he’ll make Victor come back to the ice. He will seduce Victor through his routine by shoving his ass out there for Victor to notice. Why? Because that’s the only way Chris can get close to Victor. That’s the only way anyone – aside from Yuri – can get close to Victor. Yuri even said in the very first episode he’d been dreaming of being able to share the ice with Victor one day, because that was as close as he knew he’d ever be able to get. Victor is so distant with everyone, while maintaining an illusion that he’s letting you get so close. It’s part of this persona he’s built. Notice how in the first episode, when he sees Yuri staring at him, he doesn’t act creeped out or ignore him or tell him to stop. He assumes Yuri is a fan and offers a commemorative photo. Yuri walking away is probably the first time Victor’s encountered that reaction, and probably why Victor stared after him. Had known about Yuri’s ability to embody the music, he would have probably done more than offer a photo.

So because Victor offers this illusion of being so close and friendly with everyone, people like Chris are angry and jealous about Victor quitting skating. Now they will be unable to grab his attention by their performances. His eyes will only be on Yuri. They’ll be unable to share the ice with him. He only shares it with Yuri. They can no longer stand next to him on the podium. Yuri has Victor all to himself at the kiss and cry. Victor still offers good luck to each contestant, but it’s Yuri he is cheering hardest for, it’s Yuri he’s offering the most hearty congratulation, it’s Yuri he wants so badly to win. Now all of Chris’ illusions are shattered (lots of shattering in this show) and he realizes he was never very close to Victor at all once Victor devotes himself to Yuri. So what does Chris do? Seduce him away from Yuri.

It’s all he knows how to do. No one but Yuri knows why Victor chose to leave. No one but Yuri knows what drew Victor to him in the first place. Maybe they think it’s a goodwill thing, that he feels badly for Yuri and also wants to try out something new with skating by being a coach and making a winner out of Yuri who came in last the year before. What they don’t know is that Victor saw something in Yuri, and he wants to show that to the world. So Chris assumes that once Yuri loses or chokes, or Chris shows himself to be the superior skater, Victor will lose interest and go back to skating (or maybe even coach one of them). That’s why Chris’ first performance was so overtly sexual; if he causes enough of a stir, makes it sexual enough, he can seduce Victor into leaving Yuri.

But this is Victor, who has probably seen every kind of performance out there, from the subdued to the overtly sexual. What interests Victor instead is the subtlety of a performance. Victor choreographed Yuri’s routine of Eros. Eros is sexual love, and yet Yuri’s routine is not overtly sexual. I mean, the boy made it sexual in episode 6 with that lick, but that was his own doing. Victor is more concerned about the movement of his body, the gestures, the way Yuri lets the music speak through him. VIctor was more satisfied with Yuri’s performance once Yuri chose to embody a woman, rather than a man. When he’s learning how to move like a woman, he says he won’t have to change the routine at all, just change small things about the way his body moves. Subtle things. When Russian Yuri was learning his Agape routine, he snapped at Victor that he was performing it exactly the way Victor had shown him, but Victor wasn’t satisfied. He wanted Russian Yuri to embody agape, which Russian Yuri only was able to do when he thought of his grandfather. The steps of his routine never changed but his expression, the flick of a hand, maybe even the way he tilts his head changes. Subtle things. This is what satisfies Victor.

So what does all this mean? I think it’s meant to show us what exactly makes Yuri different from the rest. Not his idolization of Victor, not any physical appearance factor, not whether or not he’s a good skater. I think this is meant to reassure us that Victor chose Yuri because of what he saw in him, the sincerity and rush of emotions in that first youtube video, and what Victor knows Yuri is capable of. Remember, Christophe placed second in the previous year’s Grand Prix, and Yuri came in last, but Yuri is the one Victor chose. No matter what happens, if Yuri chokes and tanks his performance again, if he does his best, but still doesn’t get gold, or if he wins the entire thing, Victor will truly stay with Yuri because Victor’s interest and love started when he saw a glimpse of who Yuri was, and a love like that is something that will last.

Sorry Christophe, but maybe you can talk with Phichit about getting a few videos from time to time of Yuri and Victor when they’re being stupidly cute and sweet together.

@victuurimarch i don’t know if this is what you had in mind, but I hope it’s the kind of meta you wanted.

Thank you @miss-moberg! <3

I really enjoy your take on Chris! He’s not very deep, this one, but he is very human. His reaction doesn’t make him a bad person, he just is used to using his sexuality to get the things he wants. That’s another reason why this anime is so damn good! He could have been made into a bad guy, but he wasn’t.

So hypothetically, do you think Rin and/or Haru could beat Micheal Phelps?

Avatar

We know their best times in canon already, and I believe someone ( @matsuoka-lin ?) figured out that the times were good enough without any real training that, once they actually started training professionally, then yes they could beat him.

There are lots of “if"s though, like which strokes/races they’d have the best chance of beating him in and which ones he clearly excels at.

I’m pretty sure several people have talked about this–anyone have any input? :D I love this stuff XD

AAAH! This post literally has my name all over it…!! *grin!*

This screencap is from Free! ES episode 1! It shows Rin & Haruka’s score(s) after they tied and set a new tournament record. While it’s debatable whether or not we’re actually meant to be able to read the scores… It sure looks like the board says 50.0-something. I’m going to go with 50.09, personally. (Note: Kyoani has really put a lot of research into this show. They went to motherf*cking Australia just for a single episode, you know? You can’t tell me these numbers are random. Nope. No way.)

Haruka is staring at the scoreboard in… surprise… or whatever you want to call it… because, while racing Rin, he broke his own personal record. We know this because Gou tells him so afterwards:

To top things off, Rin says this in Free! ES episode 6:

Now, I’ve got to admit that the significance of all of this was lost on me for a long time. I didn’t think it was that impressive. I even thought Haruka might’ve completely blown his chances of getting scouted altogether by quitting halfway through his race in Free! ES episode 9 — and that he’d really need someone to put in a good word for him before going pro through a backdoor type of thing.

But, let’s look at the qualification times for the Olympic Games in London 2012. For the 100M Freestyle there were two ways to qualify: by the “A” time (48.82), or the “B” time (50.53). The “A” qualification allowed countries to send in  meeting two swimmers, while the “B” side allowed them to send one swimmer.

If that 50.09 is a correct reading, this would mean both Haruka & Rin already qualified for the Olympics in the 100M Freestyle. Of course, they’d have to have set that 50.09 at a FINA-approved event — during a specific time-frame. For London, this was 1 March 2011 to 3 July 2012 . And they’d still have had other Japanese swimmers to compete with (from what I understand, that competition would’ve happened at the JAPAN SWIM event in April).

Here are the 100M Freestyle results from the JAPAN OPEN for 2012:

Going by this, Haruka & Rin wouldn’t have made it with the times from Free! ES episode 1. What about after they’ve been training at a proper university-level for an entire year, though…? ;)

Here’s the thing: thanks to the very last scene in Free! ES episode 13, we know they do actually make it. Specifically to Rome in 2009. As the only two swimmers in the 100M Freestyle (presumably that’s the event we see them in).

FYI: I’m basing all of this on the confirmation we recently got that Free! is set before 2008. Considering the shots of them competing in Rome, I’m guessing they both graduate in March 2008 — and make the National Team in 2009.

For completeness, here are the 2009 results:

I’m 100% convinced Kyoani is fully aware of these times. They clearly didn’t pull that 50.0-something out of thin air, IMO. So. In order for Haruka & Rin to have made it to Rome, they’d have had to preform better than 49.08. Shave off one second in their first year at university? I’m pretty sure they can do that. And then some. (If you want to know how they might’ve done in Rome, you can always have a look at the results here!)

If you ask me, all of the things mentioned in this post explain just why so many scouts are after Rin & Haruka in Free! ES. These two hadn’t even graduated yet and they were already setting times that’d qualify (one of) them for the Olympics. It’s pretty impressive stuff. Of course they’d have a whole bunch of scouts after them!

ANYWAYS. To get back to the original question: I do believe that with proper training and a little bit of luck, Rin & Haruka could theoretically beat Phelps — who set his personal record of 47.51 in Beijing 2008. Maybe by 2012? (He didn’t compete in the 100M Freestyle in Rome 2009 or in London 2012, though. They’d have to compete with him in another event. Or in Rin’s case: butterfly.)

A closer look at Shuu Tsukiyama’s true nature + why I think his flamboyant persona is a coping mechanism for his loneliness.

I can see how easy it would be for those who have only watched the Tokyo Ghoul anime to mischaracterise Shuu. Besides the gourmet arc, he serves no relevance to the plot other than as pointless comic relief who flamboyantly prances around in over-saturated suits while screaming his ‘El Dorados’ and ‘Spicy Spices’ and basically making a complete mockery of his manga counterpart. But Shuu’s character is a lot more intricate than that. In fact, I whole-heartedly believe that Shuu is actually a very lonely individual whose flamboyant personality is a subconscious facade and coping mechanism that helps him deal with his loneliness. I’m not going to go into extensive depth about his relationship with Kaneki (there are already plenty of lovely and well-written analyses floating around), instead, I want to explore why I think Shuu is actually one of the most complex characters in the entire Tokyo Ghoul series, as well as one of the loneliest.

My reasoning behind this? Well, let’s start with Shuu’s family.

Not much is known about Shuu’s background. All we know is that he’s from a very wealthy household and that we never see his parents. While he’s not the first manga character in history to have an unexplored family background, this is quite strange in the Tokyo Ghoul series, after all, we get to learn about the family backgrounds of characters such as Kaneki, the Kirishima siblings, Hinami, Amon, Nishiki, Yoshimura, Akira, and Yomo. Hell, we’re hardly 20 chapters into TG: re and we know more about the families of Urie, Saiko and Mutsuki than we do Shuu! Why is this? I feel like it’s Ishida’s way of suggesting that Shuu doesn’t have a very deep and important connection to his family like many of the other characters.

This idea is further reinforced by the audio drama, with Shuu himself revealing that as a child he used to calm himself down by screaming and playing Chopin, or calling out to his servant Matsumae. While this does serve as humour in the context of the drama, it also raises a few flags. As a child, wouldn’t your first natural response to trouble be to seek comfort from your parents? This suggests to me that Shuu’s parents were never around, or just didn’t care, as he’d rather seek the security of his maid or his own devices. And then in the flashback to his high school days in Re, we learn that he was a high achiever and at the top of his class. Why would such a wealthy rich kid try so hard (unless he’s naturally gifted)? His family has enough money that he’d probably never have to work a day in his life. I feel like this could possibly be because he was seeking acknowledgement from his parents, or even his peers. He has lived such a lonely childhood that he just wants someone to recognise him.

This also explains why his interactions with Chie are so strange, with him referring to her as his ‘pet’ and even giving her a collar in the Re omake - he doesn’t have many friends (Chie even accuses him of having none), so of course he doesn’t know how to properly interact with them! We even see in a flashback in Re chapter 23 that he used to play music with his servant Kanae, which just shows how little friends he has. It’s quite peculiar to share such a close relationship with a servant (as loyal and endearing as he may be), and I think it’s quite interesting that this relationship would take precedence over any other relationship that Ishida could show between him and his family or (non-existent) friends. In addition, it should be noted that Shuu has been bedridden with depression for three years and it’s his servant who’s caring the most and helping him - we haven’t seen even a glimmer of family concern, and this only reinforces how little presence Shuu’s family has in his life.

While we might not know much about Shuu’s family, we do know that he’s quite fond of reading, even admitting to Kaneki that books have helped him through many hard times.

While some may argue that this was just his way of tricking Kaneki into empathising with him, I truly believe he was being genuine (after all, he’s had to deal with the difficulty of a lonely childhood). In fact, I even think it’s possible that one of the reasons why Shuu is so passionate about Gourmet food is because of books. Ishida seems to really like the idea of exploring literature and books in his work. Kaneki compares himself to the Goat in Sen Takatsuki’s book, and Ishida strongly insinuates the parallels between Kaneki’s situation and Franz Kafka’s ‘A Crossbreed.’ And then we get the scene where Shuu passionately discusses his adoration for Savarin’s ‘The Physiology of Taste’ with Kaneki. For someone like Ishida, who’s so meticulous about details in his manga, I feel like he would only go to the trouble of including this scene if it actually served some sort of purpose to the plot or characters – in this case, fleshing out Shuu’s character.

It’s quite possible that due to Shuu’s loneliness and subsequent refuge in books, he discovered the wonders of Gourmet food through Savarin’s work (in fact, he probably found most of his interests through books - fashion, foreign languages, martial arts etc), and then felt inspired to join the Ghoul Restaurant so that he could connect to others of similar interests. As such, he goes out into the world hiding behind an extravagant and eccentric personality in hopes of charming others and making new friends - which we see doesn’t work. In fact, it’s very likely that Shuu doesn’t even realise that his eccentric personality is a facade or that he’s actually very lonely. If anything, his flamboyant personality could very well be a subconscious coping/defence mechanism, and his passion for Gourmet food serves as a distraction from his loneliness, but somewhere along the way it became so prevalent in his life that it, combined with his ghoul ethics, completely twisted his sense of morality. This also explains his desire to consume food of the highest quality. As Shuu’s beloved Savarin once said: “tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.” Since ghouls have such an important connection to food, Shuu probably believes that if he eats only the finest food, it’ll make him more admirable to others. This further justifies why it’s such a huge damage to his ego when Rize makes negative remarks about his picky tastes.

With such a lack of close personal relationships in his life, can you really blame Shuu when he fails to understand or empathise with Nishiki’s devotion to Kimi? It’s not until he joins up with Kaneki’s group that he’s reminded of how lonely his existence really is, witnessing first-hand how dedicated Kaneki is to caring for and protecting his friends and how much they in return care for him. This has quite a noticeable influence on him, and we see an example of this during his encounter with Naki, where he observes Naki’s outburst of not wanting to be left alone with the grief that accompanies loneliness, before throwing himself in front of his friends to protect them from Akira’s attack. While in retreat, Shuu praises Naki for his act of loyalty, before silently hoping for Kaneki’s well-being - this coming from the same ghoul who once ridiculed Nishiki for protecting Kimi!

Shuu doesn’t understand it, but he subconsciously yearns for a relationship similar to the one Kaneki shares with his friends, and through his interactions with Kaneki’s group, he eventually begins to care for others (such as Hinami) and genuinely wishes to be considered one of Kaneki’s friends.

His inexperience with friendship, however, makes it difficult for him to comprehend his feelings and he confuses this with hunger, convincing himself that he’s using Hinami as a pawn to get to Kaneki, and that his only interested in Kaneki as food. But as we all know, he completely feels otherwise.

image

While some of this analysis relies on speculation, I strongly believe Ishida is trying to portray Shuu Tsukiyama as a lonely individual whose flamboyant persona is mostly a subconscious coping/defense mechanism, as well as someone who never truly learnt what friendship means until he met Kaneki. Unfortunately, this complex side of his character is often disregarded or ignored, and the horrible characterisation the anime has made of his character isn’t helping anyone.
