14. What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?

Write like Hemingway. I simply don't want to. Well, within reason. I am trying to dial back some of my stylistic excesses, but I just... ugh, can't stand the advice to write like someone else, and I'm not a fan of the self-effacing (or erasing) functional style that is sometimes regarded as the gold standard. It seems weirdly oppressive to me. I love it when language calls attention to its own cleverness or beauty. I love stopping reading to admire someone else's glittery, musical, or incisive sentences. Words are wonderful, and playing with them is fun!

26. Do you beta yourself? If so, what kind of beta are you?

Ambiguity! I usually self-edit rather than bug folks with my half-assed stories, so in that sense I beta myself. I do beta sometimes for others. I'm lousy at line edits, but I like helping folks strengthen their stories & solve problems they might be having. As a beta I tend to focus on how the story affects me as I read.

38. Talk about a review that made your day.

Another! \o/ the-multicorn's reblog comments on The Round Room caused a figurative falling out of my chair. So awesome.

Now I’m imagining Seven of Nine/Riker, but without seduction in the end. (I find Riker’s masculine posturing perfectly hilarious, and Seven would keep going “Inefficient.” and I would like to watch that.) Or perhaps female!Data/Riker? :D

The storyline isn't over yet, but Santana's dress in "Brave" was black and gold.

OH, good catch! That's very interesting! Given that was a dream sequence, too, I wonder how much it speaks to her motivation in auditioning, knowing it was going to lose her fledgling friendship with Rachel but going for it anyway because she needed a win for her own morale, even though, as I understand it (though Glee world does things its own way) she likely won't see the stage as Rachel's understudy, so won't get that star recognition, but she'll still get to do the work. (PR plans of director guy aside because she wasn't anticipating that I don't think?)

I feel like I may need to rewatch "Lights Out". I don't have a great handle on Santana and her relationship to making art.

Thank you! These are good ideas! I have stuck the dough in the fridge for now while I consider options. I am leaning toward seeing if I can maybe turn them into chocolate chip blondies with the strategic addition of other ingredients. I may wait 'til tomorrow to give it a go. I will let you know how it all turns out!

(eta, tess, yes, I've already made 18 cookies, so I've got 1/2 - 2/3 of the dough left? It'll be tricky, but I figure anything is going to be an improvement over the current! )

personal thoughts about objectification while being in the public eye

Okay, so I'll cop to often being uncomfortable with some of the hyper-objectifying aspects of the sex riots on Tumblr. My dash is usually fine, but there are some comments and edits I see pop up occasionally that do make me uncomfortable.

Our Glee cast is very beautiful, and I enjoy appreciating their physical beauty and sexiness, and I am grateful they share themselves with us as freely as they do. But, to me, there's still a line between what's respectful and what's not. (We may disagree on where that line is, but I hope we all appreciate there is such a thing?)

MBTI made simple (I hope)

I mostly get ENTP. And I've seen all the Ne Ni Ti Fi stuff but I have no idea what it means. (I just like taking tests. And then I like criticizing them for vagueness and/or unacknowledged assumptions and/or bad methodology. =D)

Taking tests is fun! But, oh, the MBTI stuff doesn't actually make a lot of sense without breaking down the four letter acronyms into the corresponding cognitive functions (that's the Ti (introverted thinking), Fe (extraverted feeling) kind of stuff). There's a lot of information packed into those four letters.

So, being an INTP, I have to explain things. :D

And also, there may be others who don't know how to read their MBTI acronym, so I'll do my best to summarize (mostly based on the wikipedia MBTI page).

So you start with the four dichotomies:

  1. E or I
  2. N or S
  3. T of F
  4. P or J
