It looks like Sam and Britt are dancing near Kurt and Blaine. Is that Blaine glancing at them and then turning into Kurt's neck with a little smile all perfectly content? Nice contrast with the heartbroken Sadie Hawkins glance at Sam and Britt while he's dancing with Tina and missing Kurt so badly.)
I’d just like to point out that the Photos that everybody is “finding” that are in the frame ARE NOT THEM. There is no possible way that some of them photos could be the ones in the frame because they are the SAME photos that have been in there since the “Michael” episode in season 3. The only photo that is legit is the Warbler picture. Sorry to burst bubbles.
Oh, never mind. Unless Britt & Blaine managed to build that time machine.
Some mythology for Tina: Uttu and Arachne
With the Tina and the bowtie catching spider necklace making the rounds again, and my recent preoccupations with Mesopotamian mythology, I thought I'd make mention of Uttu (Sumerian goddess associated with good wife-hood). She was kept in the background, never a major goddess, never a Diva. Her symbol was the spider; her 'thing' was doing the weaving and sewing, the making of clothes, quietly, in the background:
"She was not insignificant, for her contributions were essential for the survival and well-being of her family, But her activities were all in the private sphere; she wielded little or no power outside her family." [x]
This is very much like Tina pre-"Props", and it's what she's rebelling against. She's a team player, sure, but that's not all she is. Is this part of her growing feminism? To reject the role of humble, invisible 'wifely' supporter--maker of the costumes for her ND family? She wants to be a Diva; and that's been her arc this season, established in "Props".
Which brings us to Arachne, and other folks have written about this (but I can't remember who, so stick your hand up if you like), who wants to be a Diva Weaver and boasts that she's even better than Athena. We know how that one goes, right? The short version is Arachne's arrogance offends Athena and brings about her downfall. She hangs herself, but Athena, pitying Arachne, resurrects her as a spider so she may weave beautifully for all eternity. It's hardly a reward.
These myths may be read as stories about a woman's proper place and, with Arachne, a warning not to overreach. Which is, yeah, unpleasant. But we can acknowledge Tina's feminism in its current incarnation is doomed to fail. (Go see Stultiloquentia's bit o' discussion of Tina's fumbling feminism.)
Who's going to be her Athena?
(some brief discussion of 4x14 below the cut, beware sp-ilers)
Thoughts about Kitty? (What?)
(Hi! I’m not dead. I feel fine, just still having some issues with social and comms stuff. I still <3 you all)
Anyway, the point of this post is I was having some thoughts, which are a little amorphous and need refining, but I wasn’t making much progress on my own.
Below, some stuff about Kitty and remixing Quinn’s S1 arc… sort of.
And suddenly I am terrified that they’ll go there with Kitty.
Me too. The whole "aren't you underage?", "I have a fake ID," "Good enough for me." thing has me worried. Is she setting him up for something awful? Do I even want to be thinking these thoughts?

More things to think about when my neurons are more lively (my brain is so sluggy today :( ).
We’re getting a lot of snow on Glee, so I want to think about this symbolism beyond the obvious snow = winter/death stuff. It seems to mean something more than this on Glee (thinking...
my first thought is it's something about wanting/yearning. I mean, that's all over the "Snow Ball" (especially from Tina's perspective, and she's the one who put together the decorations). It's also present in Kurt and Blaine's winter duets, whether they're not together but one (or both) want to be, or whether they are together, in S3, but have to pretend not to be for the sake of the show. And in Don't Dream It's Over, also, and... maybe in Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas too, for the kids on the stage? It's wanting to be a Glee club while the reality of it is kind of fractured, because they've been kicked out of their home. And possibly have divisions or traitors within their midst too (Kitty). So... yearning, and a pretty surface over something (a relationship, a group of friends) that's not quite giving you what you want, outside the scope of the song.
(I don't remember the fake snow in previous years' Christmas episodes well enough to comment on it, actually, but this is the first year we're getting snow outside of Christmas, right? And it is kind of a theme...)
Thinky, even though I had remembered the "Let it Snow" duet, I had forgot the (fake TV set) snow around the chalet AKA the end times heralding snowpocalypse! Multicorn, the snow combined with a sense of longing is great! In the winter we long for spring: rebirth and love. I'm going to play with these ideas a little more and try to break down each instance. This is a little disorganized.
Dead or Alive
So, during TBU Kurt says “I kind of feel like I’m going to die”. A few episodes later he sings Being Alive.
When Kurt asks Adam out we hear Alive and Kicking in the background. The line when Adam agrees to going out with Kurt: Who’s gonna save you?
And now I need someone to figure this out for me…
I keep thinking about the what you gonna do when things go wrong? right around Kurt’s “I was wondering” to Adam. Okay, to look at lyrics of the song — after who’s gonna save you? there are these lines:
Alive and Kicking Stay until your love is, Alive and Kicking Stay until your love is, until your love is, Alive
It’s on that last line that the scene changes to Blaine and Tina dancing together. Kurt is born in “Swan Song” — or at the very least affirms his desire to live and be vulnerable and navigate his wounds, both in his life and in performance. I’m not sure there is an answer to who’s gonna save you for Kurt except for the answer in the line “alive and kicking.” Then he’s going to stay until his love is alive and kicking, too, but his love for who? I think it has more to do with himself, and his choices, than with Adam because there is no indication that Kurt is looking to fall in love with Adam at this point in time. The last line of that bit is absolutely about Blaine, I think, about Kurt’s relationship with him and probably just Blaine in general.
And it’s interesting to note that in the part of the song not in the episode the lyric changes a little and becomes in the final seconds, who’s gonna save you? and this added just before:
Don’t say goodbye Don’t say goodbye
I love all the music choices in this episode but I think this was an especially good one.
This is all lovely and brilliant.
This is cool. During the episode I was mostly like, "Yay, more Simple Minds!" and didn't think too much about the lyrics. Good stuff here. I'd been wondering how to connect Kurt's happiness in 4x11 with his sadness in 4x10; this song works (helps show how Kurt is making a choice to open himself up to joy & more hurt despite recent events; consistent with "Being Alive" too) and it feels like it could span over the present moment (A short term thing with Adam can be nourishing) as well as future (reunion with Blaine who is the big love). There's also a little echo of Burt's advice to keep those you love close, too.
