Ok, while I’m on this kick of praising early-season DS9, I would like to humbly nominate this scene for the category of Best in Series. Or at least, like, top ten. Right up there with “So I lied. I cheated...” and “It’s insidious. Like the Federation.” I mean, the Marx Brothers patter? Inspired. Nana Visitor’s delivery? Immaculate. And most importantly, the way it gives every lead but Sisko--who gets his due in the next scene--a two- or three-line spotlight that captures something essential about who they are:

Odo’s commitment to a clear, absolute morality that transcends formal laws (“You have a code.”)

Jadzia’s mix of carefully-cultivated emotional pragmatism (“This is Kira’s decision to make”) and self-protective humor (”Well that’s rather dull”)

Bashir’s determination to be In the Thick of It even when he’s struggling to keep up (“Will someone please explain this conversation to me?”)

O’Brien’s habit of expressing deep feeling through awkward diffidence (“it’s been a pleasure serving with you”)

Quark's performative sleaze (”For you I’d have reduced my catering rates”) and pattern of trying to bond with people by baiting them

And of course the way Kira’s eyes and mouth and shoulders soften, heartbreakingly, in the little breath before she says, “These are my friends.”

It’s SO GOOD, it’s all so good, and you will never convince me otherwise.

I should note that my far-less-considered but even more weirdly specific Jadzia headcanon is that Jadzia was nonbinary before joining, in a kind of lowkey gender-indifferent way, and that Dax synced up with them and was like oh that’s cool but what if our gender was also everything everywhere all at once and Jadzia Dax was like lol yeah why not.

the reason why I'm skeptical of any plot that's like "Dax goes on Trill and starts a revolution and/or exposes the Symbiosis Commission" (it doesn't matter whether it's Jadzia or Ezri) is that imho it generally doesn't take into account anything about Dax nor how activism with the goal of social change actually works.

To me the important questions are: is there already some kind of movement within the joined people of Trill when it comes to pushing a reform of how the Symbiosis Commission works and/or a less stringent interpretation of laws like the ones that forbid reassociation? If it exists, how large it is? Is it big/loud enough that their voice is heard outside their bubble, in the larger population of unjoined people? Are there reactionary groups within the unjoined, who seek instead to keep things as they are or even more clearly delimit the existence of joined? (sidenote, I think that a slogan like 'joined people have too much privilege!' would bring a lot of people to said reactionary movements; I don't really think joined people have many privileges at all, besides symbionts being a sought-after signifier).

Whether this "joined rights movement" exists or not though it doesn't change the main fact that Dax is basically a stranger from Trill and has been for several lifetimes. Curzon pretty much left after his joining and was only back, I guess, when he was getting old enough to start thinking about passing on the symbiont to someone else. Jadzia was at least born there, though she pretty much did the same thing as Curzon once joined, and to be honest I doubt even before joining she was very keen on staying; she did choose to go into Starfleet after all. Ezri wasn't even born on Trill, did not grow up there and repeatedly says she feels no particular attachment to the traditions surrounding the joining.

If, and that's a big if, Dax wanted to push Trill to change it would be mostly a matter of doing a lot, and I mean a lot of networking, either to get a movement started or to connect with the one that already exists. That's even before laying out strategy of *how* to bring along said change. It would be a matter of relocating on Trill for years at the very least. (I know the idea of a sudden revolution is very romantic but again, joined people are a very small minority on Trill, and I don't think all joined people would be on the same side either. So that's simply not going to happen.)

I don't really see Jadzia doing any of that for the sake of it (I can't blame her for not wanting to set foot on the planet, tbh) and when it comes to Ezri the same thing applies. I think there has to be a personal reason for Dax to get over the mixed feelings they have and decide to get involved with social change on Trill. It's a thing that's been shown over and over, on DS9, that for Dax (both Ezri and Jadzia) things have to turn personal for them to understand the political/larger stakes. I love them very much but they both have this myopic approach sometimes, which imho makes them more interesting but also... kind of a terrible choice to lead movements spearheading social change. If change is the air on Trill regardless, MAYBE they could participate from the fringes. Maybe. But again, there has to be a very personal reason for them to get involved.
