Business card of Tudor Vianu, ca. 1958
Tudor Vianu (1898-1964) was born to a Romanian-Jewish family who converted to Christianity. After earning a PhD in Philosophy in Tübingen, he returned to Romania and began to work as a professor of aesthetics. He published several monographs and essays throughout the 1930s and 1940s, and wrote for magazines like the far-right literary-artistic-social periodical Gândirea.
During the political upheaval of 1946/7 he spent time working both as a professor and as Romanian ambassador in Belgrade. After the 1950s he continued his work as a professor and critic, and was made a full member of the Romanian Academy in 1955. In 1958 he was made General Secretary of the National Commission for UNESCO.
Vianu died in 1964 of a heart attack, on the day that his monograph Arghezi, poet al omului was published. He was 66.
