The Black Parade (2013)

“Jordan Amador. 21. New Yorker. Waitress. Mild alcoholic. Murderer.

Two years ago, Jordan accidentally shot and killed a Seer: a person who can see, hear, and talk to ghosts with unfinished business. Her crime came with a hefty price, too. She has two years to help a hundred souls cross over to the afterlife or her soul is bound for hell. Tough break.

As if that weren’t bad enough, two days before her deadline a handsome pain-in-the-ass poltergeist named Michael strolls into her life. His soul is the key to her salvation, but the cost just might be more than she can handle. Solving his death puts her right in the crosshairs of Belial: a vain, bloodthirsty archdemon who won’t rest until she’s his slave. Can she rescue Michael and save her own soul, or will they both be dragged down into the clutches of the eternal black parade?“

OH. MY. FUCKING. GOD. @minaminokyoko, HAVE YOU SEEN THIS?!

I have indeed. And I’m terribly flattered by how many notes this post has now.

Personally I think the thing that makes Harry such an amazing character is the fact that he has so much power, like scary amounts but he has more trouble dealing with love than he does Outsiders. Your thoughts on that?

It’s honestly one of the things that made me bond with him so quickly.

Harry can look a dangerous bad guy right in the face and grin and make a smartass comment before he kicks their ass.

And then contrast that with the fact that he starts stuttering and gets teary-eyed having personal conversations with Murphy, his girlfriend best friend of ten plus years.

That’s outstanding characterization. When it comes down to the line, Harry’s your guy. He’s got your back and even though he’s scared, he’ll handle business and beat the shit out of the villain, but he’s terribly shy and he doubts who he is on an emotional level, and a lot of people are like that, myself included. I can fake being confident when it’s needed, but don’t make me talk about my feelings (not just silly fandom stuff, I can talk about that all day). I am a total mess when it comes to dealing with real emotional shit and I really appreciate seeing a protagonist who shares that trait.

This is amazing. As far as I see it, there’s so much nuance to his character. he could be just another average toxically masculine dude who thinks emotions are for the weak, but Harry isn’t one of those guys. He’s actually incredibly experienced at dealing with the emotions and uncertainty in his life. Within himself he has this very deep understanding of how to channel bad emotions into something productive (e.g. that excerpt from White Night about the different kinds of pain), he recognises the nuances enough to differentiate between one kind of pain and another, and he knows how necessary/inevitable it is for people to suffer in those ways. There’s also that thing he says to Lash about how anger is passion and that out of anger people can create beautiful things. I found those excerpts really affecting because I myself find it really hard to control my emotions, I generally shy away from pain, but here’s Harry Dresden who’s been through all this trauma and he is able to overcome it and make something good come of it. But on top of that, it’s also fully acknowledged that there is a whole bunch of shit he just does not want to touch. His issues with his childhood, his fear of hurting others, his dislike of change. It’s tough. He’s a champion at compartmentalising, but sometimes even that’s not enough, and a lot of the time he really, really struggles. Harry is like a lot of male characters in that he tends to push through the pain until he reaches a breaking point, but where a lot of dudes would repress their emotions the whole time and pretend they don’t care, at his core Harry is an extremely sentimental soul. He cares deeply, and he likes caring, because to care is to be human, and because his magic is only as powerful as his emotions are.

Beautifully said.

He came to his feet, angry. “Oh, absolutely, I get that. I mean, you had to stay away. Otherwise we all would have known that you aren’t perfect, you gawking, stupid, arrogant, egotistical …” He hit my chest and wrapped his arms around me so hard that I felt my ribs creaking. “… clumsy, short-tempered, exasperating, goofy, useless …” I hugged my brother back and listened to a steady string of derogatory adjectives until he finished it. “… asshole.” “Yeah,” I said. “I missed you, too.”
