Finally, some high quality copies of tracks from The Smurfs and the Magic Flute! Glad Youtube showed this to me randomly. Only other copy was taken straight from a vinyl record which DOES have its charm, but it's nice to hear it this crisp and clear.
God, he's so cute when he's laughing. >w<
Call me crazy but I kinda like The Smurfs and the Magic Flute better in PAL speed than NTSC speed. The songs sound more chipper and cheery that way somehow and it just kinda feels right.
So the French lyrics to the smurfs' little ditty in the movie came STRAIGHT from the comics. Well at least I can kinda parse what the small set of lyrics were now lol.
So, the movie version of Magic Flute had a point where Johan sent Earl Flatbroke (or Lord Mumford in the UK dub) a letter posing as a letter sent by Oilycreep. Flatbroke apparently couldn't read it and his advisor had to read it to him. In the comics though, he could read it just fine.
My thought is Flatbroke CAN read his native tongue, he just couldn't read Johan's forged handwriting because Johan's handwriting is real intricate and fancy looking to begin with and Oilycreep's handwriting is even MORESO and far less legible in comparison, so he wouldn't be able to read either of their handwriting. Both their handwriting styles would definitely be illegible to us modern folk, I mean, have you SEEN medieval writing?
Just some screencaps of smurfs that make me squeak from the cuteness ^w^
Apparently, "Schtroumpf à La Fête" or Actor Smurf in the US dub of Magic Flute, has a couple other French names and is called Reveler Smurf in the English comics if the Smurfs wiki is to be trusted. Though, I think "Party Smurf" would've been a much cuter name for him. ^w^
Him and Poet Smurf kinda win the award for best smurf voices in the French dub besides Papa Smurf's chill old dad voice. Poet Smurf's singing is so pretty and Reveler/Actor Smurf's voice is just too cute!
Who's that? Why, that's princess Genevieve buying a gift for her lovely Sir Thierry. I love that she made a little cameo in this movie, she's so cute!
Going back to The Smurfs and the Magic Flute for two reasons.
- To get some shots of the interior and exterior of the king's castle. I noticed that the room layouts are quite consistent with how they're drawn in the comics, I love that detail. Makes me wonder how Peyo guided the background artists when working on this movie, did he show his own sketches of the castle layout or references from the comics? Like, we got some good exterior shots of the castle from a couple different angles and we're shown a LOT of different rooms, corridors, battlements, and some nice outdoor shots from within the castle walls in different angles! I'll have to compare the screenshots I take to get an idea of what the floor plan would be.
- To play "spot the pretty lady" because there are some cute female background characters in this movie. Seriously, they're so CUTE!
I'm specifically looking at the French version because idk, watching it in French kinda feels more natural. Though I only understand about as much French as a preschooler, so it's like I'm a kid again watching a movie on tape. But at least my mind can separate words and parse what's being said most of the time now. I'll have to practice with some recordings of irl people tho to really get an idea of how speaking works. Also, I really like the French voices.
The casting director in the UK dub of The Smurfs and the Magic Flute totally missed out on an opportunity to give Peewit a higher pitched nasal cockney accent. Like a slightly less cowardly sounding Penfold from Danger Mouse. I honestly think a voice like that would suit Peewit quite nicely in the UK dub. lol
"Dis flute's only got six 'oles innit?"
So I read that tournaments could be held after an official knighting ceremony where the new knight can demonstrate his skills. With that in mind, I like to think that joust at the beginning of The Smurfs and the Magic Flute IS that tournament for Johan. His first proper joust after becoming a knight and earning the title of Sir.
His parents would be so proud. Assuming his parents are even alive that is, which is questionable.
Look at this fella. A bright ray of sunshine, he is. uwu
