Well then, I think that puts Nobotta's first person pronoun choice into some perspective lol. He's using what's basically the equivalent of Yami Bakura's first person pronoun of choice, ore-sama. lol

Kinda neat how -don could be used for both plural pronouns AND as an honorific like -san in Kagoshima, so his pronoun can mean either "my esteemed self" in a fittingly pompous sort of way (considering Nobotta's general attitude in the manga) or as the equivalent of "we" (which could ALSO be interpreted as the royal we, now that I think about it, which would be equally pompous in this fella's case, but it reminds me more of how the King of All Cosmos would address himself if he spoke Kagoshima-ben lol).

Makes me wonder if at some point, Nobotta (and one of his descendants, Oita, in the epilogue one-shot) would've dropped the -don from "oidon" at some point in his life after doing some self-reflection. I can kinda see that happening after some character development, especially since I don't think Tochiro himself addresses himself as "oidon" at any point in his life.

In fact, Tochiro's more toned down more standard dialect (particularly in Endless Orbit SSX as far as I've noticed, as I can't 100% pinpoint what his dialect is supposed to be aside from something very much influenced by standard Japanese) kinda reflects the real life influence of current Kagoshima-ben which is being further and further influenced by the standard Tokyo dialect with some former Kagoshima-ben terms falling out of use by the younger generation.

Also explains why I struggle to parse some of what Adachi says in the live action adaptation of Ganso Daiyojohan Daimonogatari lol. Not familiar with Kyushu-ben as it was in 1980 and prior.

Yattaran in Harlock Saga is apparently not a techie. Kinda funny considering in other continuities, he was the ship's engineer after Tochiro's death. lol

Though maybe he's like me in the sense that he's computer literate but is overwhelmed by the process of fixing machines and programming. Whereas Tochiro can build and fix just about anything and probably knows how to program in assembly language and whatever other programming languages are used in the 30th century.

Another headcanon about my f/o

Tochiro's never been good with cleaning his living space. He occasionally has the urge to clean in short bursts of motivation, and HE specifically has to be the one to clean his room, otherwise he won't know where everything is.

But even if he's the one cleaning his room, he tends to struggle to find anything after cleaning his room. He also finds it to be kind of a pointless endeavor anyway because it just gets messy again and organized chaos > not being able to find anything.

Miime once cleaned his room as a surprise after his birthday. At first, he was a bit perplexed but unbothered until he struggled to find his journal, books, and ramen packs. He barged into the main deck and was like "WHICH ONE OF Y'ALL WERE IN MY ROOM?!! I CAN'T FIND A DAMNED THING!!" After that, he made sure no one entered his room without permission.... and installed a lock on his door in the Arcadia.

He outright stopped cleaning his room, only making sure things are easy to find, once he was diagnosed with space disease. He's gotta save the energy for when he really needs it, plus he still has HELLA executive dysfunction either way, so.

Whenever he doesn't have his own bedroom to himself in various timelines, he at least has a workshop to himself that's equally as messy and cluttered as his room in other timelines. Case in point, his workshop on the Arcadia in Endless Orbit SSX/Albator 84.

More Tochiro headcanons because I just thought of these today, and they're mostly about his adhd and coffee, since he's sometimes seen drinking coffee in Endless Orbit SSX.

  • So, this is the 30th century, some progress has been made in regards to how neurodivergency and mental illness is viewed and treated in many places, especially in Japan prior to earth's invasion. It's not QUITE as taboo anymore, but there was still some work to be done, especially amongst the older generations on Earth. There were some steps forward and some steps backward, after many MANY generations and political movements on Earth. With that context in mind, I can move on to the actual headcanons about Tochiro specifically.
  • Tochiro was diagnosed with ADHD-PI when he was young, and one of his teachers was the first to notice his fidgeting and attention issues. His mom was the one who got him tested and his dad was a bit apprehensive at first, still holding onto some dated views on mental health.
  • Tochiro used to be on welbutrin for his symptoms, which only helped a bit with motivation issues. After the Illumidas invaded earth, he lost access to medication as an adult, especially after joining the army as an engineer. He was already a semi-regular coffee drinker, so he ended up drinking it more regularly to compensate to somewhat mixed results.
  • With THAT in mind, coffee only rarely wakes him up. He mostly drinks it to relax his mind. It's why he regularly drinks it on the Arcadia. (his mind rarely shuts up, and the coffee calms the mental noise and even makes his focus easier when doing important tasks on the ship..... sometimes it helps his focus a little TOO well, though he's prone to hyperfixating on tasks anyhow, the coffee just sometimes enhances that hyperfocus for him)
  • If he feels like he NEEDS the caffeine, he won't be too picky with the coffee. He'd wait for it to cool enough that he can quickly chug the coffee and get it over with.
  • What he CAN'T stand, however, is coffee grounds in his coffee, they're a sensory nightmare for him, especially compared to Harlock and Tadashi's reactions to feeling coffee grounds floating in coffee. They're mildly annoyed by the grounds, but Tochiro is outright grossed the fuck OUT by floating coffee grounds and that can lead sensory overload if he's already on the edge of an overload from other unpleasant stimuli like bright cool lights, as one example, (the Arcadia's lights are mostly warmer lights to accommodate this sensitivity and Harlock does prefer warm lights as well, so they both win)
  • He prefers hot coffee over ice coffee. But again, he won't be picky if he absolutely needs it and iced is the only kind he can get for whatever reason. Easy to chug down in a pinch, but the downside is the temperature can feel uncomfortable in his mouth and especially on his teeth
  • Tadashi makes sure Tochiro doesn't overdo it on the coffee as does Harlock and occasionally La Miime. Tochiro overdid it on the coffee once and needed medical attention because of it, and he STILL felt sleepy during and afterwards.
  • He typically doesn't drink coffee and alcohol at the same time, but he did try irish creme in coffee once prior to the invasion in his early 20s.
  • Oh, and he likes his coffee black most of the time. He knows good coffee when he tastes it (and Tadashi knows how to make some good coffee even with the cheapest grounds the crew manage to get)

Ok, so while Adachi Futoshi in Ganso isn't a part of the Oyama family tree, I had a thought, like what if his lineage would eventually lead up to the birth of either Tadashi Monono in the SSX timeline or Tetsuro Hoshino?

I think that'd be interesting. While Nobotta's lineage leads up to Tochiro's birth in the 30th century, Adachi's family name ended at some point at the birth of daughters and then those daughters wound up joining with the Monono and Hoshino families, and in the 30th century, Tetsuro and Tadashi resulted from that.

Idk, just a neat little idea playing around with the whole ancestry aspect of the leijiverse.

Also, perhaps Ban Idai from Miraizer Ban can trace his lineage to Nobotta's younger brother? Just kinda spitballing here.

Tochiro hyperfocuses like a goddamned champ. I wonder how many times he forgot to eat while he was tinkering with stuff or building the Arcadia. How many times did Emeraldas and Harlock end up giving him food thinking "Yo, you forgot to eat lunch a few hours ago, so I brought you this".

The times he feels he NEEDS to do something and stubbornly sticks to that thing, whether it's fixing the ship when he needs to rest after an injury or it's driving through a disease/cancer causing wormhole to fix Emeraldas's ship, or wandering off to a random western town to find his people in Gun Frontier despite Harlock and Shinunora telling him "Bro, you're gonna get yourself killed!"... it's numerous.

He's like my black cat endlessly looking for his toy mouse because it's his favorite. If he's got something he needs or wants to do, he's dead set on it until it's done. I imagine in the case of tinkering, that might've lead to moments where he ended up staying up all night only realizing he did so after randomly looking at the clock and realizing "Oh shit, I've been tinkering with this machine for literal HOURS!! O_O" and going to bed at like the crack of dawn. I know I've done that many times lol.

I wonder if that's part of the reason he rarely bathes in some timelines lol. The other part maybe being executive dysfunction or a negative association with past bathing incidents like someone forcing him to bathe and being too rough with him.

(I do suspect that that, the lack of motivation, and the fact there's only like ONE bathing area in the boarding house could be why Nobotta hardly bathes unless he's made to bathe, and the landlady's attempts to make him bathe probably only exacerbates that issue long term. As for his unwillingness to wash his boxers... idk maybe that was to save money, like forgoing a trip to the laundromat in favor of buying food?... or more boxers??? As if that's cheaper somehow??? Idk, I liken Nobotta's endless buying of boxers to my doordash addiction thanks to having less energy to cook half the time lol. And the mushrooms seem to be the result of rain leaking into his closet, as moisture DOES lead to the development of mold and other fungi after a while, and you DON'T want that. Nobotta's just lucky the mushrooms that grow on his boxers are actually edible inky cap mushrooms and not something poisonous (yes, I do believe they're supposed to be based on the inky cap mushrooms Leiji found growing on one of his clothing once and fed to, iirc, the creator of Ashita no Joe?). Eating those mushrooms is still kinda cursed tho lol.)

I realize we haven't spoken (directly) before, and I hope this isn't too weird of an ask to receive, but I honestly just wanted to comment on how bafflingly different Tochiro's various English voices are as demonstrated in your comparison post, I've never seen such a wild span of voices given to a single character before, haha

Avatar

Exactly! That's a HUGE variation over the course of a couple decades. I feel like the closest English va in sound to Kei Tomiyama's take on the character from the 80s and prior, that I can think of, would probably be either Don Messick or Paul Frees. His og voice in Endless Orbit SSX is so warm and comforting imo.

I do think John Payne and Edwin Neal are my fave English voices for him, the former matches Tomiyama's more quieter delivery in the Galaxy Express 999 movie and Edwin Neal I can kinda see being a somewhat fitting voice for him in Endless Orbit SSX if an English dub of that were to be made nowadays (maybe with a different line delivery but still).

Knowing my love of overanalyzing small aspects of a series' universe, I sometimes imagine what an in-universe medical research paper on space disease would look like, and having a sort of grounded in reality look on how it affects the body.

Considering the 1978 Harlock anime's flashback episodes don't refer to space disease by name but rather described by Tochiro as his "anemia acting up", it's safe to assume that space disease is a blood disorder, if not a cardiac disorder or both, but very likely affecting blood cell count or even affecting the hemoglobin on top of that. While it's incurable in the SSX timeline, and perhaps the disease is unknown in the 1978 timeline and assumed to be a different disorder (or very well COULD be an irl disorder causing anemia in that timeline), medications DO exist that slow down its progression while treating flare ups, much like treatments of some irl diseases and disorders, like beta blockers that treat heart problems or medications designed to slow the progression of certain cancers. (though the medication we do see Tochiro use in SSX seems to be more for treating flare-ups, same goes with the med Kei Yuki's dad is seen taking for his heart issues).

Basically, the only option is to treat the symptoms and hope the disease takes one's life later rather than sooner, and perhaps slow the progression as long as one can. And for all we know, that could also be what Kei Yuki's dad was suffering from in his only appearance in SSX, further emphasizing its affects on the heart as well as the blood.

It's clear the disease has been known about for quite some time. Perhaps it was discovered in the 29th century if not a couple centuries after humanity started settling in other planets. Surely that wormhole in SSX ain't the ONLY place people have contracted space disease from.
