Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
Some time ago, I blogged about how my then 4-year-old’s starting Pre-K had forced me out of my comfort zone a bit, as starting school brings with it many new connections all at once. The older I get, the more I embrace my innate introversion. I accept it for what it is and have no problems with it, but when I do allow someone into my space, I consider it something special. Since that other blog post, I’ve become good friends with some of the other parents from the class, and we all adore her teacher, which I think I had mentioned previously.
Well, I said all that to say that last night we actually had *gasp* dinner guests! We had my daughter’s teacher and her fiancé over for dinner. I spent most of the day preparing - the house, even more than the food. Keeping the kids from wrecking the house as I cleaned was more work than the meal itself! Still, we pulled it off somehow, and I must say, it was really, really, fun.
Both kids were thrilled to have visitors, especially those particular ones, and my husband (who is many times even more introverted than I am, if that’s possible) hit it off famously with Paul, the fiancé. They quickly bonded over Sci-Fi and talked the entire evening, which doesn’t happen with my husband. Usually, if he doesn’t know you well, he keeps to himself, so that was huge. As for me, I felt more relaxed than I have in months. Anything and everything bugging me was put completely out of my mind while they were here, and it’s always nice to see how well the kids interact with Alex, the teacher (short for Alexandra). She’s a natural with them, and after all the years of experience she’s had working with kids (even before teaching), it’s no surprise. As a result, although she has no kids of her own yet, she’s someone who totally gets it in a way that most childless people don’t, even when they think they do. That allows us all to feel comfortable with her, and I value that level of comfort. It’s not easy to find.
So, yeah. We had guests over for something other than a play date or birthday party, and it was great. I can’t wait to get together again!
