hi! what pens do you like to use in your sketchbook? :o

FORGOT TO ANSWER THIS these are my most often used ones

from top to bottom:

  • LePen fineliners. they bleed thru pages like a motherfucker but i like the color options and line quality
  • Zebra MildLiner. great for quick mono color highlights
  • UNI POSCA. MY MVP!!!!!!!!!!
  • placeholder for any cheap pen i buy at flying tiger. surprisingly decent stuff for sketchbook fuckery for the price
  • the next two are a double tip marker + brushpen from MUJI. great for beta fill but the bleed is also kinda nasty
  • Tombow Fudenosuke brush pens. I have both the soft and hard variety but hard is my most used. again mvp - have used these for almost 10 years

on top of that recently i caved and bought some gpen nibs and ive been having a lot of fun with that as well!!! i loooove pens and ink

Heya, Milk! You got any advice for somebody who wants to start taking commissions but doesnt know where to start? I been drawing for a while (about 10 years), but I never tried selling my art before. It's kinda scary. I don't need a lot of money right now, so it's not urgent, ive just heard people say it's good experience. Is it worth trying at all rn? Sorry if you answered something like this before

no worries!! i dont think anyones asked me about this stuff before tbh... im in a similiar boat where i dont really do these out of necessity lol its definitely worth it!! if u thought about it even briefly its worth it to try

its been a hot minute since ive first started taking comms but i guess these would do for starters:

- your following might affect comm interest - i would only get very sporadic ones for the longest time unless i undersold (DO NOT DO THIS GET UR MONEYS WORTH) so dont get discouraged at first is what im saying. get ur pals to promo the announcement posts and put urself out there and eventually someone will get interested

- you can start small and lowkey. if u wanna just dip your toes in the commissions water before doing full blown pieces its absolutely ok to start with doodle or sketch comms. they tend to be cheaper and attract client bases that way anyway - so its a win win! low stakes and you can slowly figure out what works for you

- for the love of god make a TOS. having a document of things that are and arent allowed that u can point at whenever somebody tries to pull a fast one on you is a lifesaver. mines really thorough but i like to cover all the bases

- pretty much at every step where youd think 'going back to fix something after this part would be a pain in the ass' stop and send the progress to ur client and ask if anythings off or needs fixing before you keep going. better safe than sorry. in general be communicative and upfront about any info with ur commissioner - its a nice thing to do and will make both of ur lives easier!

- make sure ur comm post includes clear examples of the kind of art u can offer - this is gonna be the forefront that attracts ppls attention! they should know what theyll be getting

- set up a comm only email or a google form for taking in comms its. much easier to keep track of things this way. actual communication can go somewhere else but its good to have a single place just for the actual initial inquiries etc.

I RAN MY MOUTH LOL. if u have other specific questions feel free to ask for a follow up i suppose!! these are just the ones i wish i thought of when i first started. i hope ur commissions journey goes well, im rooting for ya !!!!!!!

📏 What’s your go-to canvas size?

4000 x 4000px at least!!

🌈 Do you use more warm or cold colors?

scrolled thru the recent stuff to make sure and i think its actually a pretty even split currently! i think i used to sway more towards warm colors in the past...

📚 How many layers do you typically use?

forgot to finish these before my trip WHOOPS

for most of the process im a one layer guy. once i get the rough colors in everything gets merged and i paint the whole thing - usually at most a finished piece will squeeze about 8 layers out of me, including effects

HOWEVER......! my latest commission was a bg piece with separate props and before merging some additional layers i was up to 80. that one was a shocker

🐻 also secret extra option 💏 which is a question where i give you. a little kiss.

ask game 🐻 Your go-to things to draw when you need comfort?

hmmm might be a cop out answer but genuinely any drawing in general - i dont think i deliberately pick out specific subjects to draw with the goal of feeling better - i just feel better if i finish a piece!

but surefire smile causing drawings are any that feature my friends (c'mere meep 💏💏💏💏)

I've been using printify for my art do you recommend inprint?

Avatar

there was an uproar about it withholding payouts from artists but i cant really verify that as i havent reached the $50 benchmark needed to withdraw money earned without contacting staff yet lol. if printify doesnt have this its probably a better service.

all i can say really. havent used printify so i cant compare it. i mostly like inprnt for the constant site wide discounts - i would rather ppl didnt break bank on physicals of my work if it could be helped

im so sorry your fanart+description singlehandedly convinced me to check out death mark but i saw the horror tag and dropped to my knees... how bad is it (<- major chicken)

I MIGHT BE THE WRONG PERSON TO ASK <- loves horror so so much and not easily rattled

it's a vn with at most interpolated animation segments but i found it builds tension pretty well (especially the first one!). u can kinda see the jumpscares coming due to the pauses beforehand (and even those are scarce) (in the sequel u can even turn those off or skip cutscenes)

but well the game is about ghosts That Try To Kill You and features frequent instances of body horror and uncanny valley stuff, on top of a lot of other trigger warnings i wouldnt be able to list just off the top of my head. ITS LOADED I GUESS. i did not really jump at anything but loved the atmosphere throughout but like i said i eat up horror like no other

Idk if it was intentional but regardless the fact that your art of Falin encased within ribs is nuts with how it also resembles teeth biting down around her. I need to lie down

the general thing i was going for was entrapment by a part of yourself/something protective ! i guess the maw imagery was kind of inevitable in that regard, im happy to hear at least a part of my intentions came through :] throws a blanket over ya

I love seeing more of your traditional work!!! luv ur digital art too, but ur traditional stuff has such nice texture and bite to it. it's got a different flavor to it, it's neat to see :]

just curious, but besides the obvious, do you approach your traditional process differently to digital work? is there anything you prefer doing traditionally vs digitally, or vice versa?

aw thank you! happy to hear so, its been nice to get back into traditional again. knowing theres a different flavor to it thats fun to see for others is a relief too HAHA

to answer your question - yes and no lol. theres definitely aspects of my process that remain somewhat similiar (i like to work on one layer digitally if i can) but the biggest difference are the limitations that come with the traditional one. i dont have all that many materials on me! so it forces me to work with limited palettes etc. my biggest concern is usually settling on, depending on the materials, how to make the illustration pop with just 3-5 colors and ink. also, and i know its something a lot of ppl dont like, but i love how traditional forces you to roll with mistakes. i fuck up a lot lol but making it work in the end is part of the fun, plus it adds character!

overall i prefer digital for full complex illustrations, especially with a background or where id play with perspective. theres a lot of tools that can help streamline the process there. having a full spectrum of colors to work with is nice too

i LOOOOVE lining and inking traditionally. its so fun. its where my art started and i love coming back to that!!! i can never get the same type of lines digitally no matter what i try, which made me gravitate towards digital painting instead

theres times where i combine the two processes too :] traditional x digital combo artworks are also really fun
