a couple of tumblr functions if you didn’t know about them:
  • you can make tags on an individual blog display from the earliest to latest post by adding /chrono to the end, for example: http://gameofgifs.tumblr.com/tagged/season_202/chrono
  • you can search through a tumblog by date using “http://username.tumblr.com/day/YEAR/MONTH/DAY”, for example: http://gameofgifs.tumblr.com/day/2012/09/16
  • you can view just the photo posts on your dashboard in mosaic form by going to http://www.tumblr.com/photos
  • you can save ask messages to your queue or drafts by hovering your mouse over the publish button and holding down “alt”, which will bring up alternative options
  • by using the url “http://www.tumblr.com/show/type of post” you can filter your dash, for example “http://www.tumblr.com/show/photos” will show only photos
  • you can retrieve previously used themes via the theme recovery page: http://www.tumblr.com/themes/recover
  • when reblogging a long text post (like this one!), click on the “as” at the top of the post to reblog as a text post, link or quote

how do i know when to use -, –, or —? i know the short one is for between words (like twenty-two) but i’m not sure how to know which length to use when writing it into the sentence (i hope i phrased that right??). are there rules? does it matter?

You’re going to be able to find a lot more in depth answer here. But the short of it is:

- : This is a hyphen.

– : This is an en-dash.

— : This is an em-dash.

The hyphen is used to connect words, like you say. Ex: Twenty-two, ex-boyfriend.

The en-dash is used in the context of a span of time. Ex: 1996–2018, February–March.

The em-dash is used when inserting a thought. Ex: He wouldn't—couldn't—go home.

Good question! Hope this helps 😊

There are so many ways to make moodboards, bookcovers, and icons without infringing copyright! As artists, authors, and other creatives, we need to be especially careful not to use someone else’s work and pass it off as our own.

Please add on if you know any more sites for free images <3

Thanks for the information!!

If you’re writing a character who does drugs, but you don’t do them or haven’t experienced a certain type, have no fear! Erowid is here. It’s an online forum where you can find out prices, and people post their experiences. From first time, to good times, to bad times. It’s so helpful, and people are super specific. Just remember, drugs are dangerous if you let them be, and you should never do anything you’re not comfortable with.

How to write a kiss

Rebloggable version, as requested by davrosbro. :)

Oooh!  Yes!  I love kisses.  Kisses are where it all starts ;).

Okay, first, remember that kiss is much, much more than just lips.  It is lips, but also tongues, teeth, eyes, faces, hands, noses, bodies, heartbeats,  breath, voice- and most importantly, a kiss is emotions.  A kiss without emotion is just wet mushy lips stuck together.  Ew.  Gross.  The most important part of a kiss isn’t the how, but the who- because of the emotions between the two people.

Okay so:

lips- Lips can slide, glide over each other smoothly, or they can be chapped and rough and dry and get stuck on each other.  They can match, top-to-top and bottom-to-bottom, or they can overlap, with one person’s top or bottom lip captured between the other person’s lips (yummy).  If there is lipstick or chapstick there is lipstick or chapstick flavor, otherwise, lips don’t have a taste (can you taste yours?).  Lips also can smack- the sound of two of them coming together or pulling apart, because they’re wet and warm and soft.

tongue- Tongues are always wet, and always warm.  They’re very versatile.  They can trace over lips, teeth, or another tongue.  They can be smooth and graceful or teasing and flicking.  When tongues are involved, there is drool.  It’s only sexy when you like the person you’re kissing, or else it’s kinda gross. :P

teeth- teeth can clack together awkwardly, or teeth can bite down sensually.  A person biting their own lip is cute, a person biting another’s lips is sexy.  A person biting gently is sensual, a person biting roughly is sexual.

eyes- Eyes can be wide open with surprise, half-lidded with desire, fully closed with pleasure.  Eyes can gaze lovingly, lustfully, wistfully, hungrily, seductively- it all depends upon the emotions of your characters.  Have them do whatever you like, but don’t leave them out- give them at least a mention!

faces- Faces are what the lips are attached to.  Noses bump, cheeks flush, ears turn red, foreheads either wrinkle or relax.  Kisses can leave lips, quite easily, and become kisses on chins, cheeks, noses, foreheads, ears, necks, throats.  Kisses on noses or foreheads are cute and adorable, kisses on cheeks are sweet, kisses on chins, ears, and throats are very sexual.  And a kiss on the lips can be all of those! <3

hands- Hands are super-important.  In order to describe a kiss, usually you want to also describe the hands.  Where are they?  Does one character have on on the back of the other’s head or back, holding them close?  Are they on someone’s shoulders pulling them near, or pushing them away?  Fingers brushing someone’s cheek or palms grabbing someone’s ass convey two very different kinds of situations, even if the kiss itself is exactly the same.

noses- Noses are annoying.  They easily get in the way, especially for first kisses!  People have to tilt their head to one side or the other, and if they don’t, noses bump.  I’d only mention noses if a kiss is supposed to be awkward or uncertain or nervous.

bodies- bodies are either close together, or far away.  Someone can be surrounded comfortingly by someone’s arms, or terrifyingly trapped by them.  Bodies are warm or hot, they are calm or nervous, relaxed or tense.  Body language says a lot.  Is your character pulling away, or moving closer?

heartbeat- Hearts can beat fast or slow, and that’s about all they can do- but there are lots of reasons why they do!  A heart can beat fast with fear or excitement or nervousness; a heart can pound with lust or race with terror or sing with joy.  Hearts can glow, cower, or shatter.  When you really want to drive the emotions of a character home, mention the heart.

breath- To me, the most consuming part of a kiss is the breath.  The air that someone else has just breathed going deep into your lungs is very intimate.  Lips and tongues don’t have a taste, but breath does.  Each person’s breath tastes different, smells different, and surrounds a person differently than anyone else’s breath.  Breath can be warm and sweet, breath can be hot and sexy, breath can be hot and frightening.  It is something that is very present and should not be left out.  A lot of writers leave breath out.  And it’s so important; it’s the most intimate part of a kiss.  Someone else is breathing into your lungs, and it’s either heaven or it’s hell.

voice- Voice conveys much, even without words.  A voice can groan, whimper, gasp, moan, catch, whine, scream, sigh.  Voice can convey emotion powerfully, and while some kisses are silent, usually they’re not.

emotion-  Emotion is the most important- and the thing you try not to say.  You want to describe it, through all of the things above, so that it’s perfectly clear what your characters are feeling, without you ever using the “feelings words”.  If they’re in love, their bodies will lean close, their eyes will smile, their voices will giggle softly.  If they’re nervous, their palms will sweat, their noses will bump, their voices will shudder.  If they’re afraid, their muscles will be tense, their faces will grimace, their lips will not open.  Emotion is the color that you keep inside your mind as you write; it’s the base line that drives the description behind everything else you say.

Wow, that was a lot!  Gosh I hope it wasn’t too much!  Keep in mind not every kiss has all these things- this is just a list of things to consider when writing a kiss, and based on how long of a kiss you want to make.  Keep in mind that typing “they kissed for a long time”…that’s six words, it takes half a second to read, so that’s a short kiss!  If you want a long kiss, you need long sentences that make the reader linger.

So maybe to start off, pick three things on the list to describe in your first kiss.  Don’t try to do it all- that would be too much for even the most epic kiss.  Just pick what’s most important to this particular scene, to these particular characters, and describe those parts along with the lips, and you’ve got yourself an awesome, emotional kiss. <3

yknow what i’m just going to give a quick bit of advice for any DnD or whatever tabletop players: if you’re trying to create a character and are stuck on their background, give them a job. Like a normal-ass job.

We have a witch in our party, but his greatest contribution to our campaign so far is that he’s also a fucking lawyer. The fact that in any given situation he can read the legality of our actions, the punishments for digression, the loopholes through it, it’s turned out to be absolutely vital to how we get through our dumbass shenanigans.

Our fighter, meanwhile, has a job as a professional dominatrix, and you’d be amazed how often it comes up? Her intimidation checks are through the roof she can just slam the butt of her spear against the floor and everyone shuts up and listens to her, it’s fantastic.

Like maybe this is an obvious thing to a lot of players, idk, but i have just been utterly charmed by how much you can get out of it–both in terms of utility and personality–if you have your character paying the bills not with dragon slaying, but with regular human professions.

local psych and writing major with bad grammar here to tell you about subtle body language shit people do when they’re talking to help out with writing interactions:

  • note that people who are high self monitors will notice these behaviors more often and can adapt to different conversations more than those who are low self monitors, who may not realize that they are reacting inappropriately in a situation.
  • second note that we only remember a fraction of dialogue and conversation, what sticks in our mind is how a person made us feel during the conversation
  • women, parents, good teachers, and actors are more sensitive to gestures and expressions and noticing subconscious behaviors in others.
  • please note that some of this may not apply to everyone, keep in mind where these social situations could change for your neurodivergent, mentally ill, and disabled characters

under the cut, i go through non-verbal interaction, gestures, personal space, and eye contact

How to Pick a Birth Date Guide

Okay this is like one of my favorite things in the world to do, picking a birth date for your character can be an insanely fun thing if you play into the astrology side of things. On one hand, you have a month and a number and a year, and that’s it. On the other, you have a fun little side tool to show your character off, play matchmaker, and laugh with your friends over a daily horoscope like nerds. Really? You’d give that up? I mean don’t take it so seriously you ignore plotlines or something, but– well here’s how to get that little part of things set up! Since I love it and all. Did I mention I’m a huge nerd? No? Well Mom, Dad, I have something to tell you…

Sometimes people like to write things about florist’s shops.  Here are two things you need to know, the most egregiously wrong things.

1. It makes no fucking sense to sketch out a bouquet before you make it.  Every individual flower is different in a way that cannot really be adjusted the way other building materials can be adjusted, and each individual bouquet is unique.  Just put the fucking flowers together.

2. No one — in months and months of working at the flower shop — has ever cared what the flower/color of the flower means.  No one’s ever asked.  It’s just not something people tend to care about outside of fiction and it’s certainly not something most florists know.  You know what florists know?  What looks good and is thematically appropriate.

Here’s an actual list of the symbology of flowers, as professionals use it:

Yellow – for friends, hospitals Pink – girls, girlfriends, babies, bridesmaids Red – love Purple – queens White – marriage and death (DO NOT SEND TO HOSPITALS) Pink and purple – ur mum Red, orange, and yellow – ur mum if she’s stylish Red, yellow, blue – dudes and small children Blue and white – rare, probably a wedding Red and white – love for fancy bitches

Here are what the flowers actually mean to a florist:

The Fill It Out flowers:

Carnations – fuck u these are meaningless filler-flowers, not even your administrative assistant likes them, show some creativity Alstroemeria – by and large very similar to carnations but I like them better Tea roses – cute and lil and come several to a stalk, a classy filler flower Moluccella laevis – filler flower but CHOICE Delphinium – not as interesting as moluccella but purple so okay I guess Blue thistle – FUCK YEAH, some fucking textural variety at last!  you’re getting this for a dude, aren’t you? Chrysanthemums – barely better than carnations but better is still better Gladiolus – ooh, risky business, someone understands the use of the Y-axis, very good

Focal points:

Long-stem roses – yeah whatever Lilies – LBD, looks good with everything, get used as often as possible Hydrangeas – thirsty fuckers, divas of the flower world and rightly so, treat them right and they make you look good Gerbera daisies – the rose’s hippie cousin, hotter but no one admits it Peonies – CHA-CHING, everybody’s absolute favorite but you need guap Orchids – if this isn’t for a wedding you’re probably trying too hard but they’re expensive so keep ordering them

You know what matters?  THE CUSTOMER’S BUDGET.  THAT’S TELLING.

-$20 – if you’re not under 12, fuck off, get your sugar something else $30 – good for bouquets but an arrangement will be lame $40 – getting there, there’s something that can be done with that.  you can get some gerbs or roses with that and not have them look stupidly solo. $50 to $70 – tolerable $80 – FINALLY.  It sounds elitist but this really is the basic amount of money you should expect to spend on an arrangement that matters.  That’s your Mother’s Day arrangement.  You’re probably not going to spend $80 on a bouquet. $90 to $130 – THE GOOD SHIT, you’re likely to get some orchids $130+  – Weddings and death.  This amount of money gets you a memorial arrangement or a handmade bridal bouquet.  Don’t spend this on a Mother’s Day or a Babe I Love You arrangement, buy whosits a massage or something.

Miscellaneous:

  • Everything needs greening and if you don’t think that you’re an idiot.
  • As a new employee, when you start making arrangements, you can’t see the mistakes you’re making because you’re brand new and you’re learning an art form from the ground up.
  • With a few exceptions customers don’t have a clear plan in mind.  They want you to develop the bouquet for them.  They want something that will delight their little sweetbread but you’re lucky if they know that person’s favorite color, let alone flower.
  • Flower shops don’t typically have every kind of flower in every kind of color.  Customers generally aren’t assed about that.  Most people don’t care about the precise shade of the rose or having daffodils in July, because they’re not boning up on flower language before they buy.  That would imply that they’ve got a clear bouquet in mind and, again, they don’t.
  • Being a florist is essentially a lot like what I imagine being a mortician is about.  You’re basically keeping dead things looking good for as long as possible.  You keep the product in the fridge so it doesn’t rot and look horrible by the time the family gets a whack at it, and in the meanwhile you put it in a nice container.

Anyway that’s flowers.

this is magnificent and I love hearing about ppl job feilds

okay this is possibly bonkers advice but I’ve found that writing a cover letter is so easy if you just like. briefly inhabit the persona of a high elf who thinks they’re hot shit and cannot imagine why any of their previous work experience would be anything less than gobsmackingly impressive. “as you will see in my resume, I have extensive experience with…” “I am ideal for this position because…” “I’ve noticed this thing you do well and here’s how I will help do it even better…” just really go for it you know, just act like you’re already half hired

Writing Pregnant Characters

Some facts:

  • A normal human pregnancy is 40 weeks (nine months) long from the start of the woman’s last period
  • 1 out of 9 children in the US are born prematurely
  • Pregnancy is split into three trimesters: the first lasts from weeks 1-12, the second from week 13-28, and the third from 29-40/birth
  • 3.3% of births in the US are twins, and less than one percent is triplets. These do not reflect historical figures, as women over thirty – the group reproducing now – have a greater chance of having multiples
  • The hormones estrogen and progesterone have the strongest effect on pregnancy
  • Possibly the worst nine months of a woman’s life

Detecting Pregnancy

  • A missed period is the most obvious symptom of pregnancy. A woman might not know she’s pregnant for up to five weeks.
  • Fun fact: sperm survive up to seven days in the uterus
  • Cramping and implantation bleeding – one of the earliest signs – occur after the fertilized egg attaches itself to the wall of the uterus (6-12 days after fertilization). The cramping and bleeding feel and look like normal menstrual symptoms, but disappear after a few days.
  • A woman’s breasts will feel achy because of hormone fluctuations

1st Trimester a.k.a. The Worst

  • Morning sickness is the chronic nausea that plagues women during pregnancy. Contrary to its name, morning sickness can strike at any time, even when the woman has not had food. Then it’s dry heaves and burps. Morning sickness can cause dehydration serious enough to land a woman in the hospital.
  • Cravings and the rejection of certain foods occur
  • Fatigue is common during the first term, as the woman’s body accustoms itself to the new hormone levels
  • Violent mood swings are also another nasty symptom of pregnancy (caused by hormones)
  • Some women suffer “metal mouth,” which is caused by excess estrogen. Metal mouth makes a woman’s entire mouth taste like a nickel. Some prenatal vitamins make it worse.
  • Women who have been pregnant before have fewer of these symptoms
  • Most miscarriages occur during the 1st trimester

2nd Trimester a.k.a. It Gets Better

  • A lot of the symptoms present during early pregnancy – morning sickness, fatigue, and metal mouth – disappear
  • 75% of pregnant women acquire gingivitis
  • The woman will start to put on weight. A healthy woman puts on 25-35 lbs. during pregnancy. An underweight woman should put on 28-40 lbs. Overweight women should only put on 15-25 lbs. A woman with twins should put on 35-45 lbs.
  • The baby noticeably moves – or quickens – in the uterus at about 20 weeks. Towards the end of the 2nd trimester, the quickening will seriously impair the woman’s sleep
  • Stretch marks around the belly, breasts, thighs, and buttocks become prominent
  • Hormones give a woman’s skin a permanently flushed look and darken the skin around the face
  • Hair growth increases (it all falls out after the baby is born)
  • The hands, feet, and ankles begin to swell. Some women jump an entire shoe size during pregnancy
  • The body begins to ache, especially around the back, abdomen, groin, and thigh. This is the woman’s body carrying the growing fetus 24/7. Back pain is combatable by sleeping on the side and a pillow between the legs. Most women also experience headaches, but cannot take medication for them as the drug may harm the baby.
  • The “baby bump” is noticeable in women at a healthy weight at around 12-20 weeks. The bump shows sooner in women who have already been mothers.

3rd Trimester a.k.a. Get This Thing Out of Me

  • The only thing the baby is doing at this point is growing. Women put on the most weight during this trimester, about 1 – 1 ½ lbs. a week. The breasts alone may gain two lbs, further compounding any back problems.
  • Back pain is the leading cause of complaint amongst pregnant women. Carrying ~20 lbs. of infant every day is a strain on the muscles. Pain pills are still out of the question.
  • Women experience small contractions prior to the real thing. The false contractions disappear after awhile, whereas real contractions will become closer together and more painful.
  • As the baby grows, it grows up into the lung cavity, restricting the woman’s breath.
  • The belly button sticks out
  • Women get less and less sleep, from the size of the baby, its movements, and anxiety about birth
  •  Women go to the bathroom more frequently because the fetus is pressing down on their bladder
  • Heartburn, hemorrhoids, constipation, and varicose veins are some other problems that characterize the last three months of pregnancy
  • If a women bleeds slightly, it may be a serious sign of trouble, including preterm labor

I’m a very lazy person. I know my characters well, but every time I try to fill out a proper character sheet, I either get distracted or simply never finish them.

SO!

I made this! A silly, simple character sheet in which you only have to check boxes to get to know your dear puppet character. Use to your heart’s content, and if you’re going to repost, please credit! Enjoy~

Now that’s a character sheet I wanna try out!
