This shit.
So Hunchback is far and away my favorite movie from Disney’s Renaissance, and it always makes me so happy that yes, people seem to appreciate it, people seem to love it, but I’mma go into exactly WHY it’s my favorite, and WHY I think it’s so crucial, and WHY I think it should be required viewing for young boys specifically.
We all know that a huge bulk of the media we’ve grown up with consistently has that one frustrating message: Being the hero means you’ll get the girl. Many boys let this mentality bleed into reality. We have “nice guys,” who feel that their niceness entitles them to romance, when obviously that discredits a female’s personal choice. We all get this, we all know this, and a lot of us get that it’s a toxic message.
So check out our hero.
He’s an incredibly good person who isn’t conventionally attractive.
Check out our lady.
Super good person, conventionally attractive.
The movie so deliberately builds up Quasi’s hopes. There’s a whole fucking song about it.
But Esmeralda, who is her own person with her own motivations and preferences, chooses another man, who is also good and also attractive.
A lot of people criticize this aspect of the movie, the fact that Quasi doesn’t get the girl BECAUSE of his appearance. But my argument? This is the best damn message a movie could ever send.
Because when things get dicey, when Esmeralda’s life in in danger, when Quasi would be putting his own life on the line, he knows that romance is no longer within the realm of possibility. He knows he won’t be “getting the girl.” He knows this, and he allows himself a moment of bitterness, he risks falling prey to the “nice guy” trope, and he almost succumbs.
“She already has her knight in shining armor, and it’s not me.”
BUT THEN HE DOES THE RIGHT THING.
He has NO ulterior motive for saving her life. NO ulterior motive for opposing the man who raised him. And he doesn’t know that he’ll get any reward, he knows he could straight up get killed for his actions, and yet he still acts.
And there’s no bitterness. There’s still so, so much love between him and Esmeralda, pure awesome platonic love, and love between him and Phoebus, and just fucking love all around, it’s amazing.
I’ve heard so many people express distaste at Quasi not ending up with Esmerelda. Like he was cheated out of some kind of reward. But have they watched the ending?
Does that look like a man cheated of his reward? Does he look like he “lost” to Phoebus? No dude, that’s a man who has everything he ever wanted, and that’s also a man who didn’t “get the girl.”
If that’s not an essential message for young boys to hear, I don’t know what is.
The writers described HoND as a “Rolling Stones” ending: Quasimodo doesn’t get what he wants (Esmeralda’s love) but he gets what he needs (freedom from his abusive guardian and acceptance by the city in general). And yes, that totally counts as a win for him.
An excellent opposite to this would be the plot to The Phantom Of The Opera (the book) He does not embrace her personal choice.
On a scale from Hunchback of Notre Dame to the Phantom of the Opera, how badly did you handle a lifetime of isolation based on deformity, and losing your crush to a guy who would absolutely place second to you in a singing competition
“Disney is working on a new Hocus Pocus film...”
“which will be a remake/reboot and will star a new cast.”
Disney animators: Awe, this will be a cute little Easter egg to put in the movie
Die hard Disney fans mapping out conspiracy theories, multiple universes, timelines, and assassination plots:
Let’s be real you guys we’re running on very little sleep right now and I’m going to try to recount everything but I might miss some stuff BUT
Wrinkle in Time - we got a preview/trailer of the movie and I really think it’s going to be amazing. The costuming and effects are really pretty. Oprah, Mindy Kaling, and Resse Witherspoon are playing the Mrs’s and Chris Pine is playing the father. Then we got Oprahed because we got a poster from the movie and I wanted to cry at Oprah yelling “AND EVERYONE GETS A POSTER! YOU GET A POSTER! YOU GET A POSTER!”
Nutcracker and the 4 Realms - this is a movie I hadn’t seen much of press wise but we now know that Kiera Knightly, Morgan Freeman, and Helen Mir will be starring in it. The mouse king will be made if thousands of mice. Misty Copeland the famous ballerina will also be starring in it. It takes you through 4 realms it kinda had a Alice in Wonderland feel to it. November 2nd
The Lion King - John Favreau came out and we got to see almost all of the Circle of Life sequence and it. Was. Amazing. Baby Simba is really cute. We only saw Mufasa from a distance tho. Rafiki looked really well done as well.
Aladdin - we have a Aladdin and Jasmine. Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott. And Will Smith is the Genie!
Dumbo - march 29th 2019 we got to see the life sized Dumbo. He is adorable. Also kinda scary tbh but not in a Tim Burton way which is good. Tim Burton also sent a video from set and you got to see Casey Jr and some of the Circus
Jungle Cruise - It was confirmed that there is a jungle Cruise “project” underway with Dwayne the Rock Johnson. Lol
Mary Poppins Returns - this gave me chills Emily Blunt and director Rob Marshal came out a talked about the film then they had the symphony reveal from behind the curtain and played the music live to the teaser trailer. We saw lots of silly scenes with the 3 new children and Lin Manuel Miranda dancing with his fellow lamp post men. We got to see Angela Landsbury and Meryl Streep in full costume and character as well as Dick Van Dyke who we saw dancing. Emily Blunt said she wanted to carve her own Mary and “No one can out Julie Andrews Julie Andrews”
The Han Solo project was briefly mentioned but not a lot of info since I’m sure they are very busy sorting that all out
Star Wars: The Last Jedi John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Gwendolyn Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, and Benicia Del Toro, and Mark Hamill came out to speak for a moment with writer director Rian Johnson. It was cute but we didn’t get much new information. They gave us a behind the scenes video of filming and told us they are in post production. I’m sure there was a lot in the behind the scenes but it went by so fast I could barely keep any info in my head. As they’ve said before Finn will wake up
Avengers Infinity - Marvel Unveiled their new logo for their 10th anniversary next year. A shit ton of stars came out which was cool because they literally only did a wrap on the first half of the movie yesterday. They then showed us the new trailer for the movie which had so many characters in it I got dizzy.
A while ago, I learned that the tumblr user cohvenant has apparently been reposting gifsets and edits from the now deleted vintagegal blog and calling them their own.
Here, for example, is a gifset on cohvenant’s blog: http://cohvenant.tumblr.com/post/161775078126/night-on-bald-mountain-sequence-in-disneys
And here is a reblog of the original gifset: https://odinsblog.tumblr.com/post/129204674163/vintagegal-night-on-bald-mountain-sequence-in
Vintagegal’s original post is now gone since her blog was deleted, but the reblog shows that the original source of the gifset was vintagegal. It is a simple thing for someone to save those gifs and repost them as their own.
When cohvenant’s blog first appeared, I assumed for a period that vintagegal had simply returned to tumblr with a new blog, since I clearly recognized the edits as hers. When I tried to chat with cohvenant, however, they were strangely terse and evasive, leaving me confused.
Then I saw this post from someone who had been closer to vintagegal when she had been on tumblr, expressing frustration that the blog cohvenant was passing off vintagegal’s old work as their own: http://witchguardian.tumblr.com/post/160319715501/a-blogger-is-passing-vintagegals-old-gifs-as
I made a post asking people, then, if vintagegal was back. I was told that vintagegal had not returned to tumblr. One message I received was:
You can ask both @witchguardian and @vintagesalt for more information, but from what I can gather, the gifsets and edits posted by cohvenant are not their original work.
I made a few comments about this matter on my blog, unsure about what to do about it. I tried reporting the cohvenant blog for misattribution according to tumblr’s community guidelines, but because it is not my work being misattributted and I could not contact vintagegal, I could proceed no further.
I would have left this whole matter alone from then on, but today I received hostile and vulgar messages, both from accounts that have very few posts and seem to be almost made with the purpose of spreading malice:
I want to make clear that I do not mean to “spread lies” about cohvenant. I am only stating the evidence that has been given to me by others and that I can see with my own eyes. I did not even want to get involved with this debacle and would have let the matter slide if I did not get these hateful messages. If, in spite of all the evidence, myself and others are wrong about cohvenant, then I will be deeply sorry.
From all the evidence attained so far however, it seems plain that the cohvenant blog is reposting gifsets and edits from the former vintagegal blog. Even if “vintagegal isn’t even a blog” now, that does not change the fact that vintagegal’s blog did exist before it was deleted and vintagegal originally made those edits and they do not seem to be cohvenant’s own.
Here are other examples of vintagegal’s original edits and the apparent reposts of cohvenant:

Vintagegal’s original post (from a reblog): http://sazi-skylion.tumblr.com/post/80922833002/vintagegal-disneys-fantasia-1940
And there is much more of the same…
All I am doing is presenting the evidence before me and saying that I do not like being sent hateful messages calling me horrible names.
Thank you.
I shall tag people who might spread the word, since I cannot report the blog and don’t know what else to do about the gifsets and edits besides offer the information available: @mickeyandcompany @animations-daily @disneyfeverdaily @jackieblue1565 @minnothebunny @jaehaerysthewhitewolf @lisuli79 @animated-disney-gifs @briannathestrange @lovelydisneys @margots-robbie @imagitory @askadisneycharacter

Y’ALL my sister just dropped a theory about Moana on me and I’m
Grandma Tala. She seemed like a fairly healthy old woman on the whole, right? Dancing with the sea and the rays, doing Old Crazy Lady things etc etc. Okay. Sure.
The thing is, my sister suddenly pointed out that, ever since Moana dropped it as a baby, Tala had possession of the Heart of Te Fiti. The source of Life.
And then she gave it to Moana, who ran off with it to try and get the islanders to voyage out for Maui, and… suddenly deteriorated. Died.
What if the Heart had been keeping her alive. Te Fiti gave Life to the islands, but in the hands of another, what if that isn’t what it does? What if the Heart grants immortality? What if Tala knew, and still gave up the Heart so that Moana could find Maui, restore Te Fiti, and save Motunui?
And if that’s what the power of the Heart really was, no wonder the monsters wanted it.
And that’s why Moana survived in places she should have died, INCLUDING venturing the realm of spirits aka the underworld
okay this is awesome, i love it. i was just thinking the other day about how like, why was it that maui stole the heart to give its power to humans, but then moana carries it all over the place and never displays any supernatural powers at all? it would be really cool if its power was just to keep people alive. like, that’s all the power you need, as a human: just being alive. and from there you can accomplish everything yourself.
also, moana didn’t even need maui’s powers, when push came to shove. this guy who pulled up the islands and pulled down the sun and could turn into a shark and everything, and the most important thing she took from him was just how to sail the open ocean. she only really needed a demigod to recover information that had passed from her people’s living memory: once she had it again, once she and the knowledge were alive together, she was unstoppable.
humans didn’t need te fiti’s powers. humans didn’t need maui’s powers. humans love and appreciate the gifts given to them by benevolent gods and heroes, but when it comes to taking care of business— and taking care of each other— just being alive is enough power for anyone.

REBLOG TO SAVE A LIFE
Hey guys! I was linked a post to buzzfeeds definite ranking of all the Disney animated movies and it was just so far off and unrealistic, I wanted to make my own version, but not be biased about it lol
If you would like to help me out and have like 20 minutes or so, that’d be awesome. I made a survey for you to rank the WDAS movies. The link is at the bottom of the post. You can either number them OR drag them in the ranking (which I find easier). The way that I do it I find the easiest way to rank things. I start with Snow White and Pinocchio - Which one would I rather watch (Snow White) so the ranking stays the same. Then Fantasia is the third one on the list. Would I rather watch it more then snow white (no), would I rather watch it over pinocchio(yes), so i would move it to second place. Then comes Dumbo, would I rather watch it then snow white (no), fantasia (no), pinocciho (yes) so it goes in the new third place. That’s just my way of doing it. you can do however you like! It’d help if you’ve seen the majority of movies but if you haven’t just put th ones that you haven’t seen at the bottom of the list it won’t matter too much! If you have time this would be helpful! Thank you!!
Tumblr seems to be making blogs unfollow each other, again.
This is a common issue, but the number of messages I’ve gotten from others for the past few weeks is alarming. Even my roommate had noticed that he was no longer following me out of nowhere. And friends mentioning that I had unfollowed them as well. For whatever reason, it seems to be happening with mutuals. So, keep your eye out for any missing blogs from your dash. And check any mutuals you are in regular contact with.
Peace.
