It’s so… gross, to me. The way they did that and treated it first as just a punchline and then like… almost like it’s a good thing?

Yeah let’s put the guy whose problems arise from isolation in a padded room with no contact with anyone surely solitary confinement will be good for him.

He was finally ready to open up and change, sure it wouldn’t be easy, or fast, but it seemed like he was finally willing to try to be better. And you put him in a situation that can only make him worse.

You put into words my real problem with WOTFI 2024. I celebrate him living, but at the same time, he's now in a place of isolation only losing it further. He's still obsessing over Leggy in the prison, there's no way he's going to get better like this.

I think my biggest problem really does come down to Meggy saying, as you pointed out, "Hopefully, Mr. Puzzles will change for the better." You saw that lonely little kid inside; you saw him hide, whimper, and be scared of you. Do you think being alone, locked up in essentially a madhouse, is going to give him the chance to grow?

I understand it in terms of their safety. Mr. Puzzles is clearly still not the most stable and likely would be dangerous. That this is one of those fantasies with Leggy 2.0 says a lot.

But double-crossed? That's probably exactly how he felt. The tonal shift was too hard, too sudden, after giving such a sweet scene with Leggy and Kid Puzzles. He even turned off the TV for goodness sake, as if he was ready to move forward.

But how can he move forward like this? He's done terrible things, no doubt about it, punishment is required. But it still, as I've seen you put it, feels really gross how it was done. Don't show us a clearly abused child, give them hope, and then show them exactly why they should've never hoped. I feel like too many times now, his defeats where he's left in emotional pain are punchlines.

If they had defeated him in any other way this wouldn't feel so awful. But in real life too, this kind of treatment locking someone away will not help them. One cannot redeem themselves or improve themselves tied down in a padded room. I have so many thoughts on this but you did summarize my feelings well.

Also, thank you for also being upset with me about the lack of acknowledgment of SMG4 and Mr. Puzzles parallels.

thank you so much. Thank you for this response genuinely. People keep arguing that Puzzles “deserved it” and it was making me feel like I was wrong for having a problem with this. And I have calmed down I’m less mad about it but I still don’t like it.

Every time this man gets even a scrap of hope it is ripped away from him so violently. Of course he’s spiraling further and further.

and like. Okay. When SMG3 was defeated he was banished to the internet graveyard. It was a fitting punishment considering he intended to do the same to the crew. And it gave him space to figure things out while having him cut off from 4 and unable to cause further trouble. Puzzles needs something like that.

THIS IS NOT THAT. Not only does redemption require autonomy, which Puzzles no longer seems to be allowed to have… an asylum? Tied down in a padded room? Even just normal jail would’ve felt less cruel. They really, truly did double-cross him. He was allowed a short moment of feeling cared about, of thinking he might be able to actually change.

but instead of Puzzles getting better, the ending feels like our protagonists sinking to his level, using his insecurities against him, and making him worse.

He was READY to hope that maybe he can be more than this, that maybe finding genuine connection isn’t so far-fetched. Like you said, he turned off the TV, for goodness’ sake. I wasn’t expecting him to get redeemed this episode, but it could’ve been the beginning of that process. Instead we got insane asylum. Considering Puzzles is fully bound, a pretty… old-fashioned insane asylum.

Anyway. This too is parallels.

And thinking about it remember when the gang sent Four to “rehab” because he was kinda annoying and insensitive? It was Meggy’s idea? And Four got lobotomized? Yeahg. And she seems to genuinely think she’s helping here. I don’t think Meggy knows what she’s doing when it comes to anyone who’s in a bad mental state.

Meggy wants to help but is so profoundly Bad at It. Makes me worry about her coaching career because like even stuff as low-stakes as “person is scared”

Not blaming Meggy she is clearly doing her best. But… I do not think she has any idea what she’s doing. I like this as a character flaw for her where she sorta overestimates her own emotional intelligence and assumes she knows what’s best but it is done out of genuine desire to help.

But get SMG3 on this instead. He knows what Puzzles is going through AND he’s a licensed psychiatrist.

Genuinely, thank YOU as well for making the first post to begin with. It made me want to speak out as well, because this hurt me so much. WOTFI 2024 was fun, the song was a banger, it was just that ending that got to me so much. It hurts so much to see the hatred of the comments towards Mr. Puzzles. It feels too easily forgotten that Mr. Puzzles is a person no different than any of the others. Knowing something messed up happened to someone is not the same as excusing their actions.

Maybe Meggy really isn't the best person to be trying this emotional intelligence at all, you're right. Honestly, as someone who probably should go see a professional therapist herself after all her trauma, she might not be the best person to deal with someone else's trauma. She doesn't know what is best for others, probably not even herself. Look how long she pushed back her own traumas and refused to face them. Kudos to her for reaching out as she did in the song, unlike anyone else, for recognizing that scared child, but how it turned out is utterly terrible.

Speaking of scraps of hope being torn away from him...

Leggy seems to be gone for good. So, the one friend he still feels he has, likely for good now, has been torn from him forever. The friendship he felt for Leggy was not healthy, it was not even real. That's even more tragic. He wasn't even allowed to have that. But there's no way he can gain any kind of proper friend in an ASYLUM. If Leggy's in this "better place" with Kid Puzzles, it clearly didn't help Mr. Puzzles in the slightest. He's more obsessed with friendship than ever now... in a place where he's all alone.

What makes this double-crossing even worse to me on reflection? Mr. Puzzles, subconsciously, was definitely crying for help. His kid self right there on his screen even as he prepares to end them? He looks scared, sad, alone... Meggy saw this, it made her change her approach.

What makes me even more certain that this is a clear cry for help is the fact that the portal came to exist at all. There's no way he created that intentionally, and it only started to flicker into existence when Meggy showed signs of reaching out. It didn't disappear after that, it stayed. Subconsciously, he truly did want the hand to be offered to him, and his cry for help was answered.

Further going into how she is absolutely unqualified to be handling this, I know she's angry at Mr. Puzzles, but a kid is outright telling you he's never had friends and is showing how deeply he's escaped into TV, and these personal feelings towards Mr. Puzzles do not help here. Her response is aggression because she still sees that monster. Very understandably, considering her friends are in danger. But Meggy does not have enough in common with his kind of pain to truly understand. (Enter SMG3 and SMG4, who would likely understand better even if they're not showing signs of it canonically.)

The only way she was able to be better for him is as Leggy, a being that now no longer exists. A being that was never her. Meggy probably never was going to be the right one to reach out to him. I wonder if Mr. Puzzles, lost in his current madness locked up is even aware that the Leggy he knew is gone for good? Or does he see her as a traitor? Needing "Leggy 2.0," who will never betray him and is totally still here, considering his cry for help ended up well...

Anyway, you hit the nail on the head again and it made me think even more why this bugs me so much. The facilities in this universe are terrible, Meme Rehab alone shows that, I'm genuinely terrified for the kind of "treatments" they'll give Mr. Puzzles. Maybe the next time we see him it'll be like SMG4 lobotomized, maybe "reprogrammed" because that's the only way you could do that to someone with a TV for a head so far from human now physically.

Whatever happens to him there, it won't be good for him. SMG3 had the chance to make something of himself in his defeat, and it wasn't easy. Let's hope SMG3 with the psychiatry degree comes in here soon because EVERYONE is in need of therapy, but especially Mr. Puzzles.

Otherwise, Mr. Puzzles is on the path of further deterioration... not anything for the better.

I really am scared of how they’ll try to “treat” him. Really scared.

Granted, no one in this show is great at emotional intelligence except maybe Tari. But Meggy is just. The worst person for this situation. She’s the most affected by Puzzles, he desperately wants her to be something she’s not, and this stuff just generally isn’t her strong suit.

It would be interesting to have like. Three trying to work with Puzzles on this because he’s been there, man. But have everyone become concerned that SMG3 is spending so much time with Puzzles and like…convinced that Three is either brainwashed or relapsing. Would be such a fun direction to take things and we could finally address stuff like this.

Just like Yknow Three wondering whether anyone actually trusts him or if they all still see him as the villain. Drama. I dunno I just think Puzzles and Three should interact more. Dynamic with a lot of potential. Others seeing Puzzles as too far gone and Three wondering what that means for him. If they hadn’t needed him for the whole Zero situation… would they have said he’s “too far gone” too? (the answer is obviously be no because Four invited him to the 10th anniversary party before he knew about Zero. But insecurities are often illogical)

Give Meggy a break it’s someone else’s turn on the emotional turmoil and trauma.
