I took a selfie with some seals! 💙 (Keep an eye out for my next post with videos, better pictures, and information about Atlantic grey seals!) • • #mermaidmargo #mermaid #mermaids #capecod #seals #greyseals #seal #chatham #chathamfishpier #chathamseals #waterdoggo #marinelife #saveourmarinelife #saveouroceans #selfie #shellfie #mermaidlife #mermaiddog #selkie #selkies (at Chatham Harbor Fish Pier)
I've been binge watching movies all day and next on my list is Ondine, which has to deal with selkies. :)
Do #selkies count towards #mermay ?? I’m really not sure as they’re not technically #mermaids but i think they’re close enough! XD here is a blast from the past pic i drew for my buddy @stressedjenny , many years ago! xD https://www.instagram.com/p/BGAHDVhg9A2/
And another selkie sketchy illustration

Eee I love this
Selkie. A mythological creature found in Irish folklore. Are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land. They’re magnificent.
SONG OF THE SEA (2014, Tomm Moore)
I started thinking about mermaids and selkies in New England.
Everyone knows that the mermaids live off the coast, but no one ever mentions it because everyone knows already and what’s the point of talking about something everyone knows?
Pudgy, blubbery mermaids that occasionally need to drown a dudebro who feels need to comment on the most practical body type for living in cold, steel-gray water.
Selkies shifting into women with big coats and tiny shorts to crash a clam-bake. Someone asks for directions to the nearest Dunkin’ Donuts, and they shrug and say they aren’t from around here. No one you ask for directions ever is.
Mermaids speaking with a Boston accent so thick that it doesn’t really sound like English at all and some people wonder if the humans picked up the dialect from mimicking the mermaids’ own language.
Mermaids sleeping in groups like otters, holding hands and sharing body heat.
Mermaids with scales in every possible shade of gray, and the longer you look at them, the more you see.
Bahaha, just so happens that I am a mermaid from New England, though my obnoxious accent is of a Rhode Islander, not a Bostonian. XD
inuit sealmerms :D
THIS IS SO AMAZING

I think part of what I love about selkies over mermaids is that seals are a little plump anyway so fat selkie ladies are totally a thing that makes sense.
Also, I love how selkie myths are ultimately about not seeking to restrict and restrain those you love. It portrays men trying to claim women in the name of romance and attraction, and women finding their escape from such treatment. Love love love.
and here it is.
my 24 hour comic
took 22 hours. and then a little longer for some edits but. I’ve still got another hour till my 24 is officially up, and I’m definitely gonna be snoozing.
For having no planning except a selkie design and a rough concept of the girl, I think I did alright. I definitely pushed my self to try new things and, I’m happy about that. there are some things I’d like to tweak but… NOPE! IM DONE!
I also learned how much I can get done when I don’t distract myself so much. have to figure out how to rein that in haha.
also, if you’re curious about the title! fun fact time thanks to wikipedia (so it may or may not be true)
Selkies (also known as silkies or selchies) are mythological creatures found in Faroese, Icelandic,[1] Irish,[2] and Scottish folklore. The word derives from earlier Scots selich, (from Old English seolh meaning seal)
okay. sleep time.
goodnightttt!!
christinedaae asked: mermaids or selkies
Selkies appear in Scottish and Irish myth and are said to be seals who can cast off their skin and become human on land. If someone should find their seal skin they can hide it, forcing the selkie to remain human and often forcing them into marriage as well. If the selkie should ever find their skin again, they will immediately transform back into a seal and return to their beloved ocean.

Her tears are salt and water. Her hair smells of ocean spray. You may keep her for now, but it is the water she belongs to – though you have all that is hers hidden under lock and key. She’ll find her way home soon, she’s sure of it. Her brothers still visit the fishermen’s wives, and her sisters still call out to her form the shore in the dead of night. Yes… yes, she must find her way home soon.
Was watching one of my fav movies: Ondine and decided I should draw a Selkie of my own.
I don’t think I’ve posted this yet - my piece for the Rookery anthology with some other just graduated SVA classmates. The theme of the book was myths and urban legends. I spent my childhood summers on an island in Nova Scotia, and I was always fascinated with seals, and, because of that, selkies.
Disclaimer: I have not made out with a seal. Yet.
asdfasd;lfkjasdklfj lesbian selkies!
