"AU where JGY isn't evil" tag is an immediate fic red flag for me like we could not more clearly have irreconcilable differences around this character. so how did you make him "not evil" - did you make the jianghu an equal opportunity utopia with no social class hierarchy? did you raise him and his mother out of poverty? did you allow him to experience genuine compassion and consistent kindness from his peers so he could process and move past his trauma? did you stop him from having to suffer years and years of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of his father and father's wife? no?

Okay this topic has been haunting me for a while, because I feel like I have a wildly different perception of the Yin Tiger Tally's effects on Wei Wuxian than some other MDZS fans. Specifically, I've seen some takes that include the idea of the Yin Tiger Tally as some degree of corrupting force and/or supernatural drain on Wei Wuxian's mental health within the canon of the novel.

I really wonder if the different understandings stem from being influenced by which version of the story first sticks in your head. So! Indulge my curiosity:

not directly reblogging because I dont want to argue but every day I'm more??? About how people feel about the adaptational differences with JC and the wens because like. In cql he KNEW the wens like he HAD SOMETHING with Wen Qing he personally KNEW THEM if anyone is more guilty of being complicit in knowing a party is innocent it would be him (though whether or not wen qing is actually innocent in cql is. Up in the air lol)!! In the novel he met the wens approximately once while in the middle of a half-lucid suicidal breakdown right after the worst night of his life before wwx fucked off with them to go sibling-cheat on him (from JC's perspective) like. I'm not trying to argue that JC's not a dick I'm just so confused what about cql makes so many people think the characters are more excusable in the book when they're actually not. Is it because like?? The actors are so hot that it distracts people from what the characters are actually doing???? The wei wuxian war criminal woobification beam infected everyone around him too???
