i'm just gonna say what we're all thinking. it's fucking bullshit that we still don't have an anglerfish emoji. in this day and age.

just consider the potential of being able to send a little picture of a fish with a bioluminescent lure dangling in front of its mouth in conversations. it would revolutionize online communication as we know it. deep down we all know this.

there r so many emojis i always stumble across something like 🗜 and i think who the HELL would ever use this emoji. and then i think abt some guy who probably works w those things all the time n hes so happy he can use this emoji. and im happy for him

My dad has started using them regularly in conversations to make the underrepresented emojis feel included, which is very cute in theory, but it means I get texts like:

Anyways this is the only correct way to use emojis have a very 🪔 day

reminds me of this interaction I had with my parents

they were in the same room and apparently when they got my explanation text my dad threw his phone down and said “how the FUCK does she expect me to know that”

So my friend and I were wondering about how new emojis are born.  Turns out you gotta write a proposal and submit it to the Unicode Consortium.  I was looking into it and found the proposal for the broccoli emoji (link).  It’s just so wholesome:

You gotta justify that the new emoji has multiple uses.

Then again, maybe not so wholesome:

By now, I’m like 5 pages into this proposal and I’m like, “why did someone take the time to write an 8 page document on why we need a broccoli emoji?”  Then I saw this:

These guys just really like broccoli.

Rating the Red Circle Emojis

Apple:

6/10 - its fine i guess. gets the job done. its a bit shiny which i dont really get but overall its nice. actually kinda pleasing the longer i look at it.

Google:

5/10 - very flat but there is a TINY bit of shading which i hate. choose one. but it still works and gets the point across. its fine.

Microsoft:

7/10 - now normally i hate microsofts giant black borders but it really works for this one i think. its simple. its cute. i like it.

Samsung:

3/10 - why the fuck is it so shiny. thats not a red circle thats a sphere. what the fuck am i supposed to do with a sphere. fuck this.

I rate “Man Fairy” emojis

A cute woodland sprite! A mischievous boy, currently casting a spell on some mortal to tie their shoelaces together. 9/10 why is he wearing board shorts?

Oh man. Oh bro. This one is rough, from the color palette reminiscent of a Claire’s final clearance sale, to his oddly positioned hidden foot, to his vacant death stare. 1/10 give him a pair of pants.

This one is more representative of a fairy, it doesn’t convince me a tiny fey creature is living in my phone like the others. His head is not connected to his body, which is somewhat disturbing. 3/10.

This looks like Samsung saw the Apple’s Man Fairy on TV as a child before google existed and drew it in his school notebook from memory. 7/10 he did a pretty good job.

This looks like the love child of Tinker Bell and Winnie the Pooh. I don’t like to call things “childhood ruining” but if I ever do this’ll be the first. 2/10 at least give him ears.

A drastically different approach from Facebook, this is not your run of the mill sweet fairy boy. He came from a distant frozen wasteland. He has never done a good deed in his life, not once. And he wants to fucking RAGE. 10/10 I’m genuinely scared.

This is just the tooth fairy. 2/10 I have a personal grudge (my teeth were worth FAR more).

Damn. I’d let him raw me on a toadstool and the chipmunks could watch. 11/10.

just a simple unicorn trying to get by, soft and kindhearted!! she’ll share her magic with you and not ask for anything back, if you’re lucky she’ll show you were to pick the best berries 5/5

soft and cute but all i want is for them to please stop staring at me 3/5

the kind of unicorn that can only be summoned by gay wizards in the most dire of situations. hes also gay 6/5

duck emoji rates

my goodness look at the amount of detail on this one. the colors, the shading, everything is just spot on. you can almost make out the individual feathers. truly a marvelous mallard. 10/10

i see they went with one of those brown varieties of duck. while this is a bold move on their part, i feel as though it loses a bit of its personality. i’m just not really feeling this bird.  7/10

this looks like a modern colorization of the famous duck from the hieroglyphs. i am absolutely in awe of their dedication to the medium and commentary on the transformative nature of art. 10/10

look at this good boy! he is patiently awaiting a treat and i wish to reward him with a multitude of gifts. 11/10

yuck. 2/10

ohoho, what a dynamic three quarters angle! the artist’s ability to capture the essence of duck in 3d space is so refreshing to witness. 10/10

this bird’s looking a bit sickly, i think it has to do with the highlights being in weird places. hope he feels better soon. 5/10

a bit more minimalist this time around. the lack of legs makes it seem as though he’s resting on the surface of the water, and i really admire how it sets a scene and makes me feel like i’m really there. 9/10

i’m really digging the positive energy coming from this bird. i can’t explain why, but i feel like that animal’s my friend. 10/10

this is a goose. 0/10

I’m crying at the pure rage I feel from the last one

Investigating the Potential for Miscommunication Using Emoji

An interesting study by Hannah Miller and colleagues at GroupLens looks at how different people interpret emoji differently. Key quotes:

What this figure tells us is that if an iPhone user sends a Grinning Face with Smiling Eyes to a Windows Phone, Samsung, LG, or Nexus user, the iPhone user is sending a mildly negative emoji to someone who will receive it as a relatively positive one. […]
One finding that really surprised us is that a good deal of the potential for miscommunication may come from different interpretations of the exact same emoji rendering. In other words, two people looking at the exact same emoji on the same smartphone platform can interpret that emoji quite differently. For example, in the case of the Apple emoji Grinning Face with Smiling Eyes, there were some people who thought it was more positive while others thought it was more negative. […]
Overall, we found that if you send an emoji across platform boundaries (e.g., an iPhone to a Nexus), the sender and the receiver will differ by about 2.04 points on average on our -5 to 5 sentiment scale. However, even within platforms, the average difference is 1.88 points.

The results are from their paper in the proceedings of the 2016 AAAI International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM 2016) – the full paper (pdf) is here

I’d be interested to see if people’s perceptions of emoji meaning change over time. For example, when I first used to see the face with tears of joy emoji, I used to get it confused with the crying emoji, but now I think of them as VERY distinct. And I just avoid using the Apple grinning face with smiling eyes emoji because I couldn’t figure out whether it was happy or not.
