So I have one copy of Secondhand Shadow left over from the Book Fest I attended a few weeks ago. SS was my first novel, but I try not to hold that against it. :)

Summary:

It’s supposed to be a symbiotic relationship: the Shadow serves and protects the human Lumi, the Lumi feeds and cares for the Shadow. But when Damon’s Lumi died young and severed the bond between them, he declined to go with her like a good little Shadow. Yes, it hurts. Yes, he’s cold and hungry all the time. And yes, his own people call him an abomination. But for the first time, Damon’s life is his own, and he’s never going back.

Or so he thinks, until he meets Naomi, a pregnant college student… and bonds to her as his new Lumi. Which has never happened to a Shadow before. Naomi has enough problems on her plate, juggling college and a crappy survival job, preparing for a baby, and getting over her cheating ex-husband. The last thing she needs is a dark, brooding fellow like Damon depending on her physically and emotionally, and hating her for it. But a vigilante among Damon’s people has his sights set on Naomi – and they both know Damon is her only chance for survival.

(Since this is Tumblr, it’s probably best to mention up front that Naomi is a devout Christian and that’s a factor in her life decisions, including the choice to continue her unwanted pregnancy. She doesn’t picket clinics or anything, it’s just her beliefs are important to her.)

This is such a good book!!!! The world is amazing and the side characters are compelling and it was riveting, I couldn’t put it down

Read the article and it would seem the upset is because (minor spoilers) Bruce Wayne adopts Dick Grayson and then Dick finds out that the Batcave is beneath Wayne Manor and comments “Wow! Batman lives in Bruce Wayne’s basement!” (Or something to that affect) and then later when Batman asks Dick to come with him in the batmobile Dick is worried about leaving without “asking his Dad, Bruce Wayne” so Batman tells him that Bruce Wayne and Batman have joint custody of him so it’s ok. And Dick Grayson, an orphan who until recently didn’t have one dad, is overjoyed to find out that he now has two!

Speaking of Hamilton, it’s super fucked up the reputation it gets because of some of its more immature fans. Like, yeah, okay, there are people out there that are treating the founding fathers like “uwu cinnamon roll characters” instead of the actual real life people they were but that’s….not the show’s fault? The show does a better job of showing them as flawed human beings than MOST historical media, which tend to glorify them and completely ignore all flaws and shortcomings.

But more than that, it’s fucked up that the show is starting to get a bad reputation or be regarded as “cringey”. This is a show that shattered records and set milestones in theatre, and it is a show that is like 99% non-white. It’s a show that was written BY a man of colour specifically to CREATE more roles for performers of colour in an industry where he always felt there was little to no room for them. Can we not discredit that or its importance just because some teens on tumblr don’t know how to be normal about a musical they like?
