OC October Day 10: Edgar Clemm
A soft-spoken man who conducts funeral rites and watches over the cemetery. He and his twin sister Alana befriended Faith and Nathaniel at the convent and eventually became part of Nate’s ministry unit. Something about his solemn nature and his dreary occupation intimidates people. He is often seen pacing about the graveyard by himself, seemingly talking to no one. For as long as Edgar can remember, he’s had a strong connection with the spiritual world. While the idea of communicating with the dead is strange to others, Edgar treats it all like having normal conversations with the living. Nate used to one of those people who thought he was unsettling, but after spending some years working alongside him, he was able to understand Edgar a lot better. Edgar’s way of keeping the dead alive was through remembrance and he felt bad if people were forgotten. Edgar cleans the tombs and places fresh flowers regularly. Aside from Alana, Nate, Faith, and Jude, Edgar is friends with the town undertaker and coroner. He helps with relaying any final requests and messages from the dead to those establishments and their loved ones so that they could pass on peacefully. Like Faith, Edgar enjoys learning about what other people believe in and when Drache and Leon are revealed to be demons, he inquires about their rituals and funeral rites, wishing to be able to witness them himself. Even things like superstitions and urban legends interest him because he can still get a sense of how people perceive the spiritual world. Lord Drache’s Inner Hell | Commissions | Instagram | Twitter
OC October Day 9: Faith Hawthorne
Nathaniel’s childhood friend and daughter of the head of the orphanage he grew up in. She made a point to be friends with all the children and make sure everyone was happy in their new family, but something about Nate drew her to him. He surrounded himself with a hard shell because he either didn’t want others to hurt him or didn’t want to be a bother to others. Faith wanted to gently peel the shell back and help him form the human connections he lacked earlier on in his life. At first, he did all he could to avoid her, as she insisted on sitting next to him during meals and classes and following him around the grounds like an annoying puppy. He showed her his worst sides, yet she still considered him a friend, and Nate became touched with the way she accepted everything about him.
Faith in general is a very open-minded person in contrast to Nate who holds strict, conservative views. He constantly warns her that her liberal way of thinking will lead her in wrong directions and get her in a bind, but she believes it is healthy to understand all sorts of views. As long as people are doing good things with genuinely good intentions, they’re fine folks in her book. When Drache and Leon are revealed to be demons after Nate’s unit had been working with the scouting party for some time (they’d been trying figure out why townspeople had gone missing when it was Mary Bathory’s doing), Faith doesn’t treat them any differently. She’s always had a feeling that religious documents exaggerated the whole aspect of demons and befriends the Ardeurharts in order to gain a fairer, more accurate perception. Faith is also fascinated by wizardry, a practice frowned upon by the ministry, and wishes all humans could just work together against Nox’s forces instead of bickering over their differences. Faith becomes a good friend of Claire’s and observes her training with Drache, secretly learning spells to better defend herself and her companions. This does however become a troubling issue down the road when a spy for Nox is suspected among the ministry and Faith becomes the prime suspect due to her interests and relations.
Among the scouting party, Faith also gets along with Soleil due to her equally carefree nature. The two share their grievances over being bossed around by Nathaniel and Drache all day long. Like him, Faith enjoys teasing others and seeing them get all flustered. She can easily turn Claire in to a blushing mess by complimenting her on her looks and flirting with her in a jokingly gal-pal sort of way. However, because Faith is known to play around with everyone, Nate doesn’t realize that Faith is being genuine whenever she drops hints that she loves him. Even when she planted a quick kiss on his cheek while they were alone together in his study, Nate saw it as her fooling around and firmly told her not to joke about those types of matters. This hurt Faith and caused her to distance herself from him. While it took him some time, Nate eventually realized he had done something to her and then became the one to reach out to her this time around. Seeing that Nate knew something was wrong but was still oblivious to her feelings, Faith made some sort of excuse in order to smoothen things out. It was clear that Nate wouldn’t be returning her feelings, at least for now, and she didn’t want to put any guilt or pressure on him. Lord Drache’s Inner Hell | Commissions | Instagram | Twitter
OC October Day 8: Nathaniel Goodman A priest who does his best to serve his people and ensure their safety and security during the war. He has a watchful eye and was always wary of Drache when he was initially hiding his demonic appearance. Nate holds morality to a high standard and expects everyone to follow church’s creeds and kingdom’s law, having the tendency to be overly passionate when it comes to praising and preaching. However, while he’s always spitting searing curses at Drache, who’s just minding his own business and trying to be helpful, he praises the problematic Soleil since he’s an angel and therefore can do no wrong in his eyes. In this way, Nate has a sort of blind faith in how he unquestionably follows certain authorities, but unfairly judges people on a surface level.
Nate’s bias and obsession with following rules may stem from him being the bastard child of a married city official and his mistress. After four years, his mother gave up and left him at an orphanage. Nate spent his childhood seeing himself as a filthy, unwanted byproduct of sin and despised his parents, especially his father since he was supposed to be an upstanding citizen. He isolated himself from other children because he felt for some reason, they didn’t want him around either. Faith however was a pesky girl and insisted on hanging around him because she refused to let anyone be alone. After the ministry visited their orphanage and announced that they were opening up their convent for new members, Faith pressed Nathaniel to join them with her. Nate hesitated because he thought they wouldn’t accept him once they found out more about him, but Faith helped him realize that his parent’s sins weren’t his and that God and the church would look for what’s in his heart, not his mistakes or shortcomings. Thus, the two joined the ministry with Nate wanting to become a leader who would prevent people from giving into sin. While he has fundamentally good intentions, he comes off rather pushy and insensitive and Faith usually has to step in and cool him down.
Nate wouldn’t have been able to complete his rites and missions if it weren’t for Mary Bathory, his patron and a regular church attendee who he regarded as a motherly figure. Seemingly sweet and tender, Mary secretly took it upon herself to slay demons in the bowels of her manor. She claimed it was done to find a way for humans to attain their power in order to more effectively fight them, though in truth, she just wanted to harvest soul energy in order to extend her life and saw Nate as a tool. Nate had been conspiring with her by bringing her demons to use as subjects. What he didn’t know was that she also harvested homeless humans when she couldn’t get her hands on demons because she couldn’t stand getting older.
Nate had always disliked demons, but his hatred became personal when a group set fire to the convent, leaving him and a few of his friends the only surviving students. Since Nate didn’t view demons as people, he didn’t have any problems when it came to disposing of them. It was a righteous act of justice to him after all. Nate captures Drache believing that a filthy demon like him has no place among Chelona’s fated heroes. When the rest of the party goes to the manor to save him, Mary’s secret is revealed and Nate has his world is turned upside-down, unsure of what to believe in anymore. Mary is eventually defeated and Drache finally proves his loyalties to Nate when he helps him escape the burning manor before it collapses. Nate is horrified thinking Drache sacrificed his life for him after all he did to him, but Drache emerges unscathed and smirks at the worried Nate, calling him foolish for thinking a demon of the flames would be harmed by fire. Nate and his fellow clergymen Faith, Edgar, Alana, and Jude later join the scouting party when Drache and the gang sail to other lands to recruit supporters. While Nate is now an ally, he still treats Drache roughly, but in getting to know each other more and realizing their similarities, they ultimately become very good friends and Nate learns to not be so judgmental. OC October Day 7: Richard Henry von Chelona Lilian’s cousin and a duke of Chelona. Richard is the black sheep of his family and resented them for not caring enough for him when he suffered from a horrible back injury as a child. He had fallen off his horse during a race against his brother Clarence that he cheated on. Richard had been known to always be selfish and overly-competitive, so he’d earned little to no sympathy from close family members. However, from the rare occasions that people did feel sorry for him, he realized that he could manipulate others to bend to his will and get whatever he desires. With time, he was able to have both servants and relatives wrapped around his fingers and on a number of times, successfully got his revenge on people he disliked without having to do any of the heavy lifting.
Initially, Richard views Clarence and Lilian as weak heirs and aims to dispose of them and rule in their place, but his personal servants Dabi and Goraiya make sure that his deadly schemes don’t come to fruition by pretending to slip up. Richard expresses disdain for demons and tries to put Dabi and Goraiya in their places, but Dabi, having been his homeland’s most skilled swordsman, manages to intimidate Richard and is the only person who can openly resist Richard without getting punished.
When Drache and his party set sail for other lands, Dabi and Goraiya find the opportunity to return to their country. Outraged by their defiant behavior, Richard sneaks off after them and like Lilian, ends up having to stay the trip since the ship is too far to turn back once Drache realizes he has more stowaways. Now far away from the comfort of his castle, the prissy Richard struggles with having to deal with bugs, bland meals, suffocating heat, and sleeping on hard, filthy floors. Dabi realizes that outside of the kingdom, Richard has no power over them and refuses to do a single thing for him, although the soft-hearted Goraiya still offers his services out of pity for the shaken up duke. Richard is astounded by how much Lilian enjoys traveling and being around all sorts of people and realizes how strong she truly is in her determination and ability to adapt. When a wave of insecurity starts to wash over him, Lilian helps him out of it by encouraging him and staying by his side throughout their travels. Unlike everyone else in the party who’ve distanced themselves from him (Rosette even nicknaming him “Dick” to get under his skin), Lilian isn’t bothered by him at all and calls him by Henry, his second name that he prefers more. He feels guilty about the undeserved ill feelings he used to harbor against her and comes to admire and even adore his younger cousin. As he becomes more humble and respectful, he earns the friendship of the rest of the party and realizes that in order to truly be a good ruler, he has to have a heart for others like Lilian. OC October Day 6: Lilian von Chelona The humble princess of Chelona who full-heartedly loves her people and wishes to go out and see her kingdom with her own eyes, although her overprotective guardians keep her on a short leash. The princess bears a lot of physical similarities to Rosette and when Drache and his party travel to the Capital, the huntress gets mistaken for the princess who had gone missing and a Prince-and-the-Pauper situation ensues, with the girls temporarily switching lives. When Drache sees Rosette being accompanied away by guards, he and his party try to clear things up, but Rosette sees her opportunity to live in luxury and denies knowing them, leaving them baffled.
Just a little while earlier, Leon, who was ordered by the demon king to kidnap the princess, poses as a guard and lures her away from the other guards by tricking her into thinking they were sneaking away to have fun. However, other thieves recognize her and target the two with the intention of profiting off her as well. Lilian, who had been drilled with self-defense lessons ever since she learned how to walk, fends them off with intense strength, leaving Leon too terrified to pull any shady moves on her. Hearing the commotion, Drache, Reiner, and Soleil catch the troublesome young demon in the act of kidnapping and have him tied down while they try to figure out how to get things resolved. Drache, without hesitation, threatens to turn Leon in to authorities, but Lilian insists Leon actually took great care of her, causing Leon to be smitten by her kind forgiveness. Instead, Reiner proposes that they just keep Leon under their watchful eye and he eventually settles in as a permanent party member.
On Rosette’s end, the huntress fully welcomes the opportunity to be pampered as princess. After some time however, she starts to grow irritated with her guardians’ strict ways and how the lower class and poor were being neglected. Lilian had been upset by this fact too, but her proposals to help them were always overlooked because people treated her as nothing more than a figurehead. However, Rosette’s unwavering fierceness intimidates officials and brings about improved policies.
As much as Drache wants to replace Rosette with the gentler Lilian, he and his party bring her back home and Rosette is then found out and kicked out. Rather than getting upset by Rosette taking advantage of the situation for her own selfish desires, Lilian admires Rosette for having the confidence to do what she did and better serve the people. Having befriended Drache, Reiner, Soleil, and Leon during her time outside of the castle, Lilian maintains connections with them and convinces her family to work with Eterna in funding and assisting their scouting party. She even sneaks away from home once again to join the party when they later sail across the sea to scout other lands. They are already halfway to their destination when she is discovered hiding away onboard, so Drache allows her to stay even though he’d get an earful from her guardians.
Despite being a dainty young lady, Lilian is physically strong and high-spirited with an itch to explore the world around her. She and Reiner immediately hit it off like siblings and share the same fascination for learning new things outside of their sheltered lives. Unlike most of the people around her, Lilian doesn’t harbor ill feelings towards demons since she’d become close friends with her servants and treats Drache and Leon with the same respect she’d treat anyone else. She thinks Leon’s chuunibyou tendencies are cute, but she genuinely worries about whether he’ll grow out of it or not and gradually tries to help him see reality. She sees Drache as an uncle and treats him with familial affection, although Drache has a hard time dropping the formalities since he’s feels the pressure of the responsibility of looking after the royal heir. Lilian views Rosette as an older sister and while most gripe about her rotten attitude, Lilian is one to point out her good qualities. Knowing that Lilian looks up to her makes Rosette want to improve herself and she usually softens up when the princess is around her. Lord Drache’s Inner Hell | Commissions | Instagram | Twitter
OC October Day 5: Rosette Rosette grew up in the slums as an orphan and had become a huntress in order to make a living, stealing and robbing if it came to it, though Drache and her party members later make sure she stopped the latter habits. She’s a brutally honest person who only looks out for her own needs and claims that she would easily abandon others if they held her back, although her affection towards her newfound companions slowly grows with time.
As a little girl, when Rosette was on the verge of starvation, Soleil took it upon himself to become her guardian angel and helped give her the strength and will to live. He was the one who taught her how to hunt and cook and cared for her like she was his daughter or little sister, since she reminded him of a younger sibling from his past life as a human. One day, Soleil was suddenly reassigned to a different region by his superior Lune. Days pass and with time, all memories of Soleil faded from Rosette’s memory. Despite her not remembering him, Rosette now carries a subconscious feeling of abandonment and distrust and becomes the harsh, selfish person she currently is. Now, Soleil constantly tries to get her to remember the time they spent together, but she just gets annoyed by his clingy nature and denies everything.
Before their scouting party was formed, Rosette had been a bounty hunter and turned demons in to Chelonian authorities to reap the rewards and get revenge on the rotten creatures who were the cause of her father going to war and dying. Reiner partnered with her for a while to learn more about demons and when they encounter a weary Drache who’d been suffering in the wild after he was banished from his realm, she had no mercy in turning in his sorry corpse if he didn’t cooperate. Reiner insisted on keeping their captive alive since he didn’t like unnecessary violence and when they learn about Drache’s situation, Reiner convinces her that they should work with him to take down the demon king Nox. For the longest time, Rosette despised the fact that Eterna established Drache as their leader and continued to take jabs at him. Even though he was greatly bothered by this, Drache continued to be the bigger person, earning Rosette’s respect and making her realize that demons weren’t inherently evil.
Rosette in general gives others a hard time with her sass and sharp tongue, but Leon becomes her most common target. Because she doesn’t like Drache ordering her around, she takes her frustration out on the poor younger demon by belittling him and his nonsensical “mastery of the dark arts.” She doesn’t quit it until Reiner steps in, since he’s one of the few people she has a soft spot for and sees him as a younger brother. When Claire later joins the party, Rosette gets frustrated by her inferiority complex and wants to help her become more confident, although her way of doing so was to tell her to suck it up and stop being a wuss. This made Claire mistakenly think that Rosette, the only other girl in the party that she really wanted to befriend, hated her guts and she started anxiously avoiding her. However, during a partner mission, Rosette made it her chance to help Claire understand that it was okay to speak her mind and open up to the other members and helped her stand up for herself. OC October Day 4: Reiner Lichten Reiner comes from a noble family who is seemingly blessed by good fortune in everything. He is pure, kind, and happy-go-lucky and always looks for the good in others, although that leads him to become easily manipulated at times. Reiner is the “light as white and pure as snow” foretold in Eterna’s prophecy and amiable people from his hometown highly revere him as the one to defeat the demons and restore peace when in fact, he’s just a ridiculously lucky guy who accidentally hits all his targets on point and has no idea what is going on for the most part. However, out in the rest of the kingdom, no one ever believes Reiner when he reveals his identity as the hero of Chelona since his naive nature and cowardice causes them to doubt and discredit him. By traveling with Drache and the others and fighting in the war, Reiner matures and is able to prove himself.
Shortly after leaving his hometown, Reiner had helped Rosette out when she was backed into a corner by thugs and ever since, they became friends. At least that’s how Reiner saw it, as Rosette initially was just taking advantage of his fortune. However, not too long after their party with Drache and Soleil was formed, Rosette threatened to walk out of the group since they wouldn’t operate the way she wanted them to (they were serving others before meeting their own needs). Reiner wanted her to trust in them and Eterna’s word, but Rosette, who’d always been jealous of Reiner’s fortune, finally expressed her true feelings. She confessed that she’d only been using him and that she was frustrated because he couldn’t fully comprehend how difficult the lives of other people were since he’d always been sheltered. She stormed off for a while and left Reiner disheartened and shocked that some people saw him the way Rosette did. He was truly was a humble person who wanted to help people and didn’t mean to rub anyone the wrong way and after hearing her sharp words, he felt like he couldn’t do anything right even with all the luck in the world.
Soon after their falling out, Reiner was called to make an appearance at a public event at the capital city. Rosette had been lingering in the crowd and after seeing how badly the townspeople were treating him as a joke, she came to his defense and stood up for him. Seeing how vulnerable Reiner was made her realize that he was still a child who wasn’t ready to take up his role as hero and that he needed companions to help him experience the world beyond the walls of his family estate. After the two make up and promise to try and understand each other better, Rosette takes it upon herself to be a sort of big sister to him. She’d be pushing him to strengthen himself and wouldn’t baby him like Drache or Soleil do, but she’d be there to fight anyone who tried to bring Reiner down.
Reiner is the optimist of the party and never fails to cheer anyone up. While most people are hostile to Drache for being a demon, Reiner greatly admires his bravery and knowledge and looks up to him as a fatherly figure. Reiner is also one of the few people who isn’t harsh on Soleil for skipping out on his share of chores and loves hearing about his travels as an on-duty angel. While others grow irritated of Leon’s over-the-top chuunibyou behavior, Reiner enjoys playing along with him and eagerly listens to his tall tales because he knows no one else is willing to, not even Drache. Lord Drache’s Inner Hell | Commissions | Instagram | Twitter
OC October Day 3: Leon Ardeurhart Drache’s younger brother who wants to bring him back to the side of the demons. He impersonates Drache and brings chaos to a village to tarnish and expose his brother’s identity as a demon. He believes that having the humans reject Drache would cause him to return home, not having been informed that Drache would be apprehended as soon as he stepped foot on demon territory. Drache and his party had made the village their base for a few weeks and the villagers had grown fond of them, especially Drache, but they didn’t know he was a demon since he hid his pointed ears under his hood. Leon impersonating him turns most of them against Drache for a short while until his friends find this out and try to clear his name.
Leon acts as a minor antagonist for a good while, popping up every now and then to thwart their plans (to no avail) and beg his brother to come back. After Leon fails in kidnapping princess Lilian and is threatened with capital punishment, Drache finally has him join their party instead as an alternative. Even as the newest member of the party, Leon declares Reiner as his mortal enemy and vows to take down the young hero someday for the sake of all demons (though his hostility stems more from jealousy since Drache is more affectionate towards Reiner). However, overtime, Reiner’s sweetness grows on him and they become best friends since Reiner is one of the few people who believes in him and goes along with his escapades.
Like Drache, Leon also shares their family’s weakness in magic. While Drache utilizes his power in small but skillful bursts, Leon recklessly dishes out all his energy at once in order to look cool, rendering him useless just moments after his burnout. He has strong chuunibyou tendencies in how he constantly brags about his nearly nonexistent powers, talks about made-up conquests, gives his spells edgy names, and dramatizes everything he does. All this is done to cover up his major insecurities, as he had been bullied as a child for being weak. Drache is embarrassed by Leon’s delusional nature and tries to avoid being around him, which Leon doesn’t understand since Drache was in fact the one who started playing pretend with him when they were children in order to help build up his little brother’s self-esteem. When Drache grew older, he learned to accept his shortcomings and made up for them in his studies, but Leon continues to cling onto his fantasies. OC October Day 2: Soleil
Soleil is an angel banished from the heavens for becoming too attached to humans. After Drache, Reiner, and Rosette save him from drowning after he fell from heaven, he sticks with the party in order to pursue Rosette, who he looked after for as a child. Soleil had seen Rosette living a dreary life on the streets and stepped in to serve as her guardian angel for several years, although angels are instructed to only heal during dire situations and protect humans from demons. Soleil was torn when he was called to serve in a far away region, but convinced himself that Rosette would now be able to fend for herself with the hunting skills he taught her.
Soleil is elated with having the chance reestablish his relationship with Rosette, but Rosette, not remembering who he is, is irritated with his clingy nature and often disregards his affectionate gestures. She often claims he has no business with her, but it doesn’t stop him from lovingly doting on her.
As a banished angel, Soleil had his connection with the Heavenly Host severed and thus he can no longer receive the holy spirit used for healing and combat. In order to conserve his energy, Soleil basks in sunlight and often gets scolded by his party members for not carrying his weight. While he should tell Drache and the others about his condition in order to smoothen things out, he keeps it to himself because he’s afraid that they would replace him with a more effective healer. He’s loved Rosette and has grown to love Reiner and Drache and if they parted ways with him, they would forget him in a matter of days since the memory of divine beings fades quickly after losing contact. The fear of a second banishment from his friends always looms over him, but Soleil tries to cover up his anxiety with a carefree smile. Lord Drache’s Inner Hell | Commissions | Instagram | Twitter
OC October Day 1: Drache Ardeurhart A demon lord whose family had been sheltering and aiding humans during the century-long war. After being found out and banished from his realm, he befriends Reiner, the naive young hero of Chelona, and Rosette, a brash huntress, who had originally planned to turn him in to authorities for bounty. Seeing how cooperative Drache is with giving out any info they needed about the demons, Eterna the Elder Witch appoints him as leader over Chelona’s Scouting Party to gather allies across the land.
Although Drache is weak in magic, he is well-studied and acts as a mentor to others, notably Reiner and Claire, who lack control over their abilities. Along with handling foreign connections and serving as a bridge between humans and demons, Drache is heavily burdened with the task of looking after his troublesome party members. He often has to put up with their shenanigans and scold them like children, but at the end of every day, he’s grateful to be a part of their little family of misfits.
