OC October Day 13: Claire Elbertine ((Happy birthday my soft witch daughter aaaaa…))
An orphan taken in by Eterna as her trainee and assistant. Her parents were two of the most powerful wizards, but they were careless and selfish and when they had her, they just dumped her at a person’s doorstep and ran off to god knows where. The humans that lived there attempted to raise her, but then discovered her strange abilities and tried to repress them in cruel ways. They saw her as a freak and hid her in a crawlspace, forbidding her to make contact with other people. When Eterna’s carriage got stuck in a rut one day in front of their apartment, Claire used levitation magic to set it back up and ever since, Eterna had her eyes on Claire and recommended her guardians to allow her to have custody of her at her academy, Frogfarts.
Drache first meets Claire when he bumps into her in the streets of the Capital tries to return her wallet. Intimidated by him being a demon, she avoids him until he corners her in an alleyway and explains why he’s been desperately trying to flag her down. Claire fears demons because when she was a child going out for errands, a noseless demon ended up giving her and L-shaped scar on her forehead. He mistook her for a person near her who had insulted his face. Personally, she holds nothing against Drache for being a demon and wants to befriend him, but her natural fear of them keeps her from getting too close. Seeing how knowledgeable Drache is, Eterna requests that he mentor Claire so that she can pass her exams to become a certified witch and join their party. Claire’s extremely powerful but can’t control her magic, causing her to frantically apologize for a bunch of things she didn’t mean to do. In a way, she is Drache’s opposite, having great power but being shunned because of it while Drache lacks power and is looked down on because of it.
While training together, the two eventually hit a roadblock. Claire is hesitant to go on with her studies because she feels she isn’t making any progress at all and is just causing trouble for everyone. Drache is frustrated because Claire refuses to push herself to her full potential and is subconsciously jealous of her natural talent. He genuinely wants the best for her, but she’s too afraid to do anything and her failures feel like his failures as her mentor. However, after being up-front and honest with each other, they continue to encourage each other and Drache remains one of the few who strongly believe in her even when the odds are stacked against her. Claire shares Drache’s adoration for small creatures and is the only other person Sal, Drache’s pet dragon really likes. Sal usually stays tucked away in Drache’s hood and when others try to handle him, he bites their fingers, but he gives Claire’s affectionate nibbles and is down to chill on her shoulder too.
Claire gets along well with Reiner because they’re in the same boat, being mentored by Drache. While Claire is impressed by Reiner’s ability to learn quickly, Reiner looks up to her as an older sister and admires her knowledge about magic and all sorts of and creatures and cultures. Since Claire had been locked up in her room for a good part of her childhood, she had nothing to do but read whatever books she could find. Along with factual studies, she very much liked adventure novels because they whisked her away from her dreary life. She and Leon are fans of the same series and bond over passionate conversations about their favorite heroes and villains, although Leon seems to think all the fictional events were indeed real and Claire struggles in convincing him that they’re merely stories. As much as Claire wants to befriend Rosette since she’s the only other girl in the party, she can’t help but be intimidated by her brashness. Rose does indeed care for her, but doesn’t really know how to express it without disguising it under a dozen layers of sarcasm. Claire was at first taken aback by Soleil’s overly chummy personality and didn’t know how to react to him treating her so familiarly right away. Soleil noticed that Claire wasn’t used to being around others, so he helped her realize that it was okay to let herself loose and be herself around the rest of the party, that she didn’t have to worry about formalities and such. OC October Day 12: Jude Peterson
The enthusiastic worship leader of Nathaniel’s ministry unit and a young man of many musical talents. Jude hails from Cristo, the country were the main religion of Chelona has its roots. While his other family members serve as missionaries, Jude had taken up music instead because he wanted to bring joy to people through song and melody. Coming from a smaller, underdeveloped country, Jude is astounded by Chelona’s development and is very grateful to be able to live there. Nate and Faith discovered Jude as he was trying to make what little money he could by playing his guitar on the streets. His ship was originally set for a different country, but ended up sinking, leaving him stranded on the shores of Chelona without any belongings. Jude could’ve grumbled about his situation and cursed God for letting this happen, but he was a firm believer in fate and held his head up, waiting for a blessing to balance things out. His prayers were answered when Nate took him into their family and he easily found his place in the church.
As Nathaniel, Faith, Edgar, and Alana are the Drache (uptight leader), Soleil (carefree mom), Claire (misunderstood outcast) and Rosette-Leon (aggressive, deluded nutcase) of the ministry, Jude could be considered the Reiner with his upbeat personality. Jude still has a lot to learn about the culture of Chelona, so Nate and Faith show him around and fill him in on things so he doesn’t get the wrong idea. Jude has a habit of using odd jargons that no one understands and slipping out comments that might seem offensive, though Jude most likely didn’t mean them in that sense. He also has a unique palette and eats all sorts of bizarre foods that the rest of the unit declines to taste. Jude offers to help with cooking, but Faith sends him off to pick flowers for Edgar or help Alana organize the archives. Lord Drache’s Inner Hell
OC October Day 11: Alana Clemm
Edgar’s twin sister who serves as the records keeper of Nate’s unit and is a tenacious evangelist. Shortly after the group of rogue demons set fire to their family’s convent, Alana witnessed the swift hand of God execute justice and bring death to their enemies. Ever since, she’s had the firm belief that God would always fight by her side as long as she followed every single order dictated in the holy documents. She’d continue to follow outdated practices and take instructions literally, no matter how morbid they were, even if they were most likely meant to be mere expressions. Obsessed with following God’s word, she demands that everyone follow her example as the self-proclaimed greatest disciple. Otherwise, they would without a doubt be doomed to suffer eternally in the afterlife. Those who show even the slightest hesitation, she considers beneath her and sees them as insects. Though Alana’s viewpoints are greatly flawed and have evolved to become more spiteful and self-serving than loving, members of the church are afraid to correct her or demote or remove her from her position since she’s the daughter of a prominent ministry leader. Her claims that anyone against her would be cursed seemed to ring true. Whether these unfortunate events happened just by pure coincidence or were actually dictated by God himself, no one wanted to test it and find out. Even Edgar seems to fear his own sister and doesn’t take her intolerance and aggression too well. He often describes her as being possessed by a mad spirit, causing others wonder if it were actually true. Though Edgar makes his discomfort about his sister clear, Alana still insists on being close by him at all times. She seems to have an odd fixation with “union” and “living as one soul”, since they are twins and are supposed to complete each other. She is anguished by the fact that Edgar has his own set of beliefs separate from hers and is set on making him see the world the way she does. Faith and Nathaniel seem to be the only ones who can somewhat calm Alana down and restrain her from going all-out with her twisted agenda since they grew up together in the convent. They manage to do so by stroking her ego and convincing her that others just aren’t as perceptive as her and that learning the righteous ways will be a gradual process. Unlike Nathaniel, who expresses himself honestly and boldly says what he thinks, Alana usually plays it off sweetly at first and slowly tries to manipulate the feelings of others. It is only when people openly defy her that she becomes frighteningly forceful. Lord Drache’s Inner Hell | Commissions | Instagram | Twitter
OC October Day 10: Edgar Clemm
A soft-spoken man who conducts funeral rites and watches over the cemetery. He and his twin sister Alana befriended Faith and Nathaniel at the convent and eventually became part of Nate’s ministry unit. Something about his solemn nature and his dreary occupation intimidates people. He is often seen pacing about the graveyard by himself, seemingly talking to no one. For as long as Edgar can remember, he’s had a strong connection with the spiritual world. While the idea of communicating with the dead is strange to others, Edgar treats it all like having normal conversations with the living. Nate used to one of those people who thought he was unsettling, but after spending some years working alongside him, he was able to understand Edgar a lot better. Edgar’s way of keeping the dead alive was through remembrance and he felt bad if people were forgotten. Edgar cleans the tombs and places fresh flowers regularly. Aside from Alana, Nate, Faith, and Jude, Edgar is friends with the town undertaker and coroner. He helps with relaying any final requests and messages from the dead to those establishments and their loved ones so that they could pass on peacefully. Like Faith, Edgar enjoys learning about what other people believe in and when Drache and Leon are revealed to be demons, he inquires about their rituals and funeral rites, wishing to be able to witness them himself. Even things like superstitions and urban legends interest him because he can still get a sense of how people perceive the spiritual world. Lord Drache’s Inner Hell | Commissions | Instagram | Twitter
OC October Day 9: Faith Hawthorne
Nathaniel’s childhood friend and daughter of the head of the orphanage he grew up in. She made a point to be friends with all the children and make sure everyone was happy in their new family, but something about Nate drew her to him. He surrounded himself with a hard shell because he either didn’t want others to hurt him or didn’t want to be a bother to others. Faith wanted to gently peel the shell back and help him form the human connections he lacked earlier on in his life. At first, he did all he could to avoid her, as she insisted on sitting next to him during meals and classes and following him around the grounds like an annoying puppy. He showed her his worst sides, yet she still considered him a friend, and Nate became touched with the way she accepted everything about him.
Faith in general is a very open-minded person in contrast to Nate who holds strict, conservative views. He constantly warns her that her liberal way of thinking will lead her in wrong directions and get her in a bind, but she believes it is healthy to understand all sorts of views. As long as people are doing good things with genuinely good intentions, they’re fine folks in her book. When Drache and Leon are revealed to be demons after Nate’s unit had been working with the scouting party for some time (they’d been trying figure out why townspeople had gone missing when it was Mary Bathory’s doing), Faith doesn’t treat them any differently. She’s always had a feeling that religious documents exaggerated the whole aspect of demons and befriends the Ardeurharts in order to gain a fairer, more accurate perception. Faith is also fascinated by wizardry, a practice frowned upon by the ministry, and wishes all humans could just work together against Nox’s forces instead of bickering over their differences. Faith becomes a good friend of Claire’s and observes her training with Drache, secretly learning spells to better defend herself and her companions. This does however become a troubling issue down the road when a spy for Nox is suspected among the ministry and Faith becomes the prime suspect due to her interests and relations.
Among the scouting party, Faith also gets along with Soleil due to her equally carefree nature. The two share their grievances over being bossed around by Nathaniel and Drache all day long. Like him, Faith enjoys teasing others and seeing them get all flustered. She can easily turn Claire in to a blushing mess by complimenting her on her looks and flirting with her in a jokingly gal-pal sort of way. However, because Faith is known to play around with everyone, Nate doesn’t realize that Faith is being genuine whenever she drops hints that she loves him. Even when she planted a quick kiss on his cheek while they were alone together in his study, Nate saw it as her fooling around and firmly told her not to joke about those types of matters. This hurt Faith and caused her to distance herself from him. While it took him some time, Nate eventually realized he had done something to her and then became the one to reach out to her this time around. Seeing that Nate knew something was wrong but was still oblivious to her feelings, Faith made some sort of excuse in order to smoothen things out. It was clear that Nate wouldn’t be returning her feelings, at least for now, and she didn’t want to put any guilt or pressure on him. Lord Drache’s Inner Hell | Commissions | Instagram | Twitter
OC October Day 8: Nathaniel Goodman A priest who does his best to serve his people and ensure their safety and security during the war. He has a watchful eye and was always wary of Drache when he was initially hiding his demonic appearance. Nate holds morality to a high standard and expects everyone to follow church’s creeds and kingdom’s law, having the tendency to be overly passionate when it comes to praising and preaching. However, while he’s always spitting searing curses at Drache, who’s just minding his own business and trying to be helpful, he praises the problematic Soleil since he’s an angel and therefore can do no wrong in his eyes. In this way, Nate has a sort of blind faith in how he unquestionably follows certain authorities, but unfairly judges people on a surface level.
Nate’s bias and obsession with following rules may stem from him being the bastard child of a married city official and his mistress. After four years, his mother gave up and left him at an orphanage. Nate spent his childhood seeing himself as a filthy, unwanted byproduct of sin and despised his parents, especially his father since he was supposed to be an upstanding citizen. He isolated himself from other children because he felt for some reason, they didn’t want him around either. Faith however was a pesky girl and insisted on hanging around him because she refused to let anyone be alone. After the ministry visited their orphanage and announced that they were opening up their convent for new members, Faith pressed Nathaniel to join them with her. Nate hesitated because he thought they wouldn’t accept him once they found out more about him, but Faith helped him realize that his parent’s sins weren’t his and that God and the church would look for what’s in his heart, not his mistakes or shortcomings. Thus, the two joined the ministry with Nate wanting to become a leader who would prevent people from giving into sin. While he has fundamentally good intentions, he comes off rather pushy and insensitive and Faith usually has to step in and cool him down.
Nate wouldn’t have been able to complete his rites and missions if it weren’t for Mary Bathory, his patron and a regular church attendee who he regarded as a motherly figure. Seemingly sweet and tender, Mary secretly took it upon herself to slay demons in the bowels of her manor. She claimed it was done to find a way for humans to attain their power in order to more effectively fight them, though in truth, she just wanted to harvest soul energy in order to extend her life and saw Nate as a tool. Nate had been conspiring with her by bringing her demons to use as subjects. What he didn’t know was that she also harvested homeless humans when she couldn’t get her hands on demons because she couldn’t stand getting older.
Nate had always disliked demons, but his hatred became personal when a group set fire to the convent, leaving him and a few of his friends the only surviving students. Since Nate didn’t view demons as people, he didn’t have any problems when it came to disposing of them. It was a righteous act of justice to him after all. Nate captures Drache believing that a filthy demon like him has no place among Chelona’s fated heroes. When the rest of the party goes to the manor to save him, Mary’s secret is revealed and Nate has his world is turned upside-down, unsure of what to believe in anymore. Mary is eventually defeated and Drache finally proves his loyalties to Nate when he helps him escape the burning manor before it collapses. Nate is horrified thinking Drache sacrificed his life for him after all he did to him, but Drache emerges unscathed and smirks at the worried Nate, calling him foolish for thinking a demon of the flames would be harmed by fire. Nate and his fellow clergymen Faith, Edgar, Alana, and Jude later join the scouting party when Drache and the gang sail to other lands to recruit supporters. While Nate is now an ally, he still treats Drache roughly, but in getting to know each other more and realizing their similarities, they ultimately become very good friends and Nate learns to not be so judgmental.
