I usually avoid posting photos of myself at protests but this one is important. Gun Control begins by stopping those who commit the most violence with guns: the police. Around 1 in 10 shooting deaths is at the hands of police. There are more people that die by police fire than there do by mass shooting. #BlackLivesMatter activists have already been saying this for years and it shouldn’t take white kids finally speaking up for the media to listen. Gun control without prohibiting police from killing over 1,000 people a year isn’t good enough. This should have been part of the goal of #MarchForOurLives: making the police (and guns) unnecessary for a safer society. K-12 campus police and security have arrested over 1 million students after Columbine. They haven’t prevented a single mass shooting that we know of. The real solution lies in creating community accountability projects, a well-funded schooling system, and early racial education. These shooters become terrorists because they believe in white supremacy and misogyny, not simply because they have access to guns. With these measures, we may actually be able to see the end of school shootings in our lifetime.
