What's your favorite cover you've done? I'm really interested because you seem to favor political stuff later on and at the start you mostly did tabloid parodies.

That’s a really tough question because I have different relationships with different works? IDK I guess there’s this kind of disconnect sometimes between how much effort I put into something, and how much I actually like the end product. For instance I spent aaaages planning and brainstorming and executing the movie within a movie idea, but I’m not super happy with the whole thing now that I look back on it?

So I guess what i’m most proud of, and what are my favourites are two different things that kind of cross over a bit. Combine that with the fact this whole thing started out as me being frustrated with the hyperbolic and invasive nature of trash rags, rather than a real attempt at creating any kind of in-universe media and I guess I have a lot of weird feelings about a lot of the stuff I’ve done over the years.

I’m most proud of You Know Who He Is: Stark Naked mostly because not only did it take a bunch of research to get the look of a GQ magazine right (which, by the way, is a magazine I have never read in my goddamn life!), and then the added effort of writing the copy and then trying as hard as I could to get Tony’s voice right throughout. I spent literal days reading it back out loud with all of his intonations and inflections to try and get the whole piece as spot on as I could.

What are my favourites though? Honestly, I really do prefer the political or technological ones. Every time I look at Rhodey on the cover of Wired I’m like fuck yes that is awesome and YOU DID THAT. I think about that time I put the Hydra symbol on Cap’s helmet as a commentary on the media’s constant quest to either vilify political figures or put them on a pedestal, and the use of sensationalist imagery to sell copies and Then they went and did Hydra!Cap in the comics a couple of years later and I was just like... No I did not want to be this kind of prophet. I think about the Economist cover where I couldn’t figure out what the reaction would be to literal aliens coming out of the sky and decided to just go with a safe for work version of What the Fuck.

So yeah, really really long answer to probably something you were thinking would mayyyybe be a sentence or two, so sorry about that. But yeah, here you go. My personal faves (not including that Tony one up there because its long AF). I’m also really sorry about the overabundance of Steve here, it wasn’t intentional at all!

Have you guys done anything with the new folks yet like Scarlet Witch or Ant-Man?

“you guys” is one person. I haven’t made anything new for a long time, sorry. Been cray busy at work so this blog is kind of on semi-permanent hiatus for new stuff (although I’m still suuuperr keen to reblog anything from other creators, just a reminder folks tag it!). I’m not super invested in either character so the inspiration just wasn’t there.

Could you do something involving Stycky? Like paparazzi photos of them kissing or something and it finally revealing why he doesn't stay with women long enough?

Normally I would reply individually, but seeing as this is an anon, I’m taking a moment to share this with the group.

Do you watch Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and if so, what are your feelings on the season thus far?

Okay, I'll answer this last one because I couldn't resist it before going to the land of nod.

Anyhoo, I've made my feelings pretty clear on AoS in the past, but basically I feel that it's a far inferior to both the films, and shows of a similar genre that it should be looking to for inspiration. I understand that being in an earlier timeslot limits what it can and can't do with the content, but so far I've been underwhelmed by the writing, acting, and consistency of the show in general. I have stopped reviewing the show for The Comics Herald because I feel that I can't contribute anything to the conversation other than the same repeated criticisms, and that makes me sad.

My general rule for TV shows is to give them three episodes, and if they don't keep me interested then I won't spend time watching them. So far I've given AoS twelve episodes, and that's only in the interest of staying up to date with current MCU continuity. I understand that there are plenty of people out there who are loving the show, and I don't begrudge them that, nor is this a criticism of those who are fans. Personally, I've never really been much of a fan of Joss Whedon (I can hear the gasps of incredulity all the way from the bottom of the world), so I guess that plays a part in my enjoyment of the show.

I really love your blog, but I have to ask... what's up with Natasha not having a secret identity? I don't quite get your logic there

Well, here’s my little headcanon…

Unlike the big battles that happened in older comics, the events of the MCU take place in a world where cameraphones, the internet, and instant communication exist. The MCU is contemporary to the world we live in.

In the events of both Iron Man 2, and The Avengers, Black Widow is seen fighting without a mask, against people who could easily identify her if seen again, and (in the case of The Avengers) in a public arena where people have cellphones, cameras, and the ability to instantly share images.

People in the real world have videoed and photographed disasters and attacks while they have happened around them, so it stands to reason that the same thing would happen in the universe the MCU exists in.

Basically, I find it infeasible that the faces of Natasha and Clint, as well as Steve to an extent (he removed his mask during the battle) would not have been shared across the internet for all to see, while S.H.I.E.L.D. was still in HOLY SHIT WHAT IS HAPPENING mode.

But it’s movie logic, I hear you say.

Well… I’ve actually found the MCU to be pretty good when it comes to logic, particularly issues surrounding identity and the way modern technology would affect real heroes should they exist in our world.

In addition to all this, you will notice that Natasha’s real name is never used in any MediAvengers posts. She is always referred to as ‘Natalie Rushman’, continuing on the identity that was created during Iron Man 2.
