You had a front-row seat to Mercymorn’s dreamy eyes going quiet;the eye of the tempest, before she reared back and punched him full in the face. There was not force in that blow, but he whitened as though her fist had been a battering ram. He gagged, doubled over his washstand, and ejected a mouthful of teeth—a tumbling, plinking bowlful; he held his hand over his red and dripping mouth and closed his eyes, and after a few moments straightened back up, a trifle greyer, running his tongue over his regrown incisors.

“you’re a writer, can you explain your process?” yes. first, i panic. then i procrastinate. then, in a fit of productivity at 3 a.m., i create chaos.

like dedra outlining the problem with decentralised administration with the “do you think the rebels care about the lines we draw on maps?” line is great bc it demonstrates that the writers actually know what the administrative problems are with a massive neoliberal empire. It’s not just oh haha the government sure does everything slow doesn’t it, it actually explains how inefficiency is produced as a result of the state breaking itself into tiny little fiefdoms in an effort to save money. the show’s inciting incident is Cassian accidentally killing a private security guard that’s been hired by the empire to watch the less important parts of its territory. The empire took over a republic that was on the verge of collapsing in part because of these same exact problems. The empire is in a decline during this period and we are seeing its renewal of power by re-centralising itself and becoming even more dictatorial as a state

i do find it hilarious that for most of gideon the ninth harrow is like “sextus your megatheorem idea is stupid. you’re jumping to conclusions. you have no evidence. your premises are flawed and your conclusion is both invalid and unsound. bitch.” and then when ianthe reveals the lyctoral process at the end of the book harrowhark is the FIRST PERSON to go “oh fuck. the megatheorem”

i’ve talked about this before but the whole concept of jar-jar binks (and the reason why people think he’s a secret sith) is that he’s a jester character whose powers and abilities are governed solely by the rule of funny, completely overriding reality when the two conflict, so what i’m saying is. if senator binks had come back to coruscant from his mission on florrum with the CG after winning stone’s begrudging respect by failing upwards through the entire mission. and (knowing few non-politicians on coruscant himself, with little ani and obi-wan off fighting the war) naively invited his new bombad good pal commander stone to the next senatorial dinner party he attended as a plus one because the food is great and why wouldn’t he, an invitation which stone would be in no position to refuse from any senator. the most realistic way for things to play out would be that they’d be turned away at the door, and inviting a clone to a dinner meant for the political elite would read as the kind of deliberate statement about their relative equality and dignity that would isolate padme in the senate even more by further positioning their delegation as radical anti-war activists/possible separatist sympathizers.

but the funniest way for things to play out– and therefore what would happen– would be that, through a series of dinnertime shenanigans probably involving juggling, he’d fall bass-ackwards into being an incredibly charismatic advocate for clone rights, eight senators would fall in love with stone by the end of the night, and the entire party would have their hearts and minds opened to the reality that the clones are not just meat droids but bombad friends, and so, what i’m saying is. i would not bet against accidental clone rights revolutionary ally jar-jar binks and his loyal coruscant guard entourage versus palpatine’s evil plans for the GAR, because much like squirrel girl versus thanos, jar-jar is gonna win any fight it’d be really really funny for him to win.

you guys are so annoying. why do i have to see discourse every year that's like "was tolkien really a woke king or was he your conservative uncle?" the guy was a devout catholic and a genteel misogynist who maintained lifelong friendships with queer people and women, and this isn't even paradoxical because that was part of the upper-class oxford culture he was immersed in. tolkien told the nazis to fuck off (and in doing so demonstrated a real understanding of what racism is and why it's harmful, beyond simply "these guys are bad news because they're who my country is at war with right now") but his inner life was marked by internalized racism that is deeply and inextricably woven into the art that he made. he foolishly described himself as an anarcho-monarchist, and it's kind of crazy to see people on this website passionately arguing that he likely never meaningfully engaged with anarchist theory, because...yeah, no shit, of course he didn't. tolkien didn't have to engage with most sociopolitical theory because as an upper-class englishman of his position, he was never affected by any of the issues that this theory is concerned with. what is plainly obvious from reading both his fiction and letters is that tolkien's ideal political system was that the divinely ordained god-king would rise up and rule in perfect justice and humility; he didn't want a government, he wanted a king arthur, even though (obviously) he was aware that outcome was impossible. why is it so hard for people to accept that he was just some guy! his letters aren't a code you have to crack. no amount of arguing or tumblr-level analysis is going to one day reveal a rhetorically airtight internally consistent worldview spanning jrrt's fiction, academic work, and personal writings, thereby "solving" the question of whether he was a woke king or your conservative uncle. his ideology was extremely inconsistent because, at the end of the day, he was just some guy.

You’ll all sleep a lot better when you realise that actually most people, rather than being purity in human form or evil incarnate, are in fact just some guy.

To the people in the OTW Tumblr Inbox asking about how the OTW is responding to the American Election.

This is a separate post (and not a response to a specific message) because we all need to see it.

Folks have been asking Support (through the form) as well as the other social media mods, and we have now been given the following to tell you.

We are continuing to closely monitor political developments that may affect AO3 and the OTW as a whole. First, we want to assure you that there are several factors that tend to protect AO3 and its users from legal risks and challenges. These include that we are a non-profit, do not host images, do not use algorithms to promote or advertise content to users, are not aimed at children, and collect very little user data. The results of the 2024 U.S. election are deeply concerning, but the OTW remains committed to providing an inclusive space for fannish expression and will continue to fight for fans' free expression, both in court and through legislative efforts, in the U.S. and worldwide. We have seen that fans are a powerful force for promoting free expression, and we will continue to inform people about opportunities for their voices to be heard. If a bill is likely to be passed in the future that could impact our ability to provide services, our legal team will be prepared to offer updates, guidance, and legal support to our users. Fans are not alone in this fight. Both the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) (https://www.aclu.org/news/civil-liberties/the-aclu-is-fighting-back-against-trump ) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/11/2024-us-election-over-eff-ready-whats-next ) made preparations for this outcome and have developed strategies to combat anticipated efforts to curtail online freedoms. We urge our users to support these organizations and others as they fight for your rights and ours.
