surratt was such an asshole not to mention a coward. he heard his mother (though, she was obviously guilty too) was going to get hanged, had every chance to stand trial and take her place, lessening her sentence, and he didn't.

i completely forgot about hippolyte havel's very nice article from a few years after the assassination. that's pretty neat. "I remember vividly the change in his face when I told him that my knowledge of the Polish language was too limited to converse in it.
