remember that this is always a slow time for the rpc. as we get deeper into the holiday season, remember that people are finishing classes and taking big tests. they're slammed at work or taking on extra jobs to pay the bills. people are stressed about money or family, figuring out flights or trips, dreading the colder weather, struggling to put food on the table. some people are experiencing more dark outside than light, which might mess their schedule up a bit. some deal with seasonal depression during these months.

when your dash is slower and quieter this time of year, and when less people are liking your posts or sending memes, it doesn't mean the community is dying or we're all headed for the end times. i understand that less interactions or less support might be discouraging, especially when some of us are already dealing with the doom and gloom of darker, colder months and the stress of the holiday season... but please don't turn around and scold people for their inactivity or their lack of enthusiasm. don't get fatalistic about the fate of this community and declare it prematurely dead. this period of time always happens every year. now is not the time for unfair expectations. now is the time for kindness, generosity, understanding, encouragement, and love. now is the time for "take your time with replies," and "talk to me if you need anything. i'm here for you."

FIVE TIPS FOR WRITING BETTER ROLEPLAY REPLIES struggling to get interactions? try incorporating these tips into your replies!
  1. use the five senses. sight, smell, touch, hearing, taste. where are your muses currently standing? what does the air smell like? are there birds chirping or people walking by? is there a battle in the distance? does the wooden floor beneath them creak when they walk? is the other muse wearing cologne or perfume? describe the world around them in vivid detail and paint a picture of their environment. this will help your writing partner envision the space.
  2. don't keep everything internal. your muse's internal commentary is important, of course, but when an entire reply is only their inner thoughts, it doesn't give your writing partner anything to go on (unless their character can read minds). make sure you add action, story progression, or character movement in a reply, or provide enough dialogue for the other muse to respond to.
  3. end your reply with a question. at the very end of your reply, have your muse ask the other character a question, or pepper a few questions throughout the reply. this gives the other writer a perfect jumping off point for their response.
  4. incorporate npcs and other things happening nearby. maybe your muses are in a library, and the librarian won't stop shushing them. maybe your muse gets a call from their best friend in the middle of the conversation with horrible news. maybe your muses are in a hotel room, and they hear a noisy party in the room next door. your muses aren't the only two people in the universe - expand upon it with details and breathe further life into this world. it makes things so much more fun.
  5. don't forget the other muse. i think we all struggle with this one the most. we get so caught up describing our own muse and their own thoughts and actions that we forget they're interacting with someone else. try describing the other character's stance or facial expression, the way they cross their arms. maybe their makeup is really beautiful. maybe their hair is nice. maybe they smell really bad. maybe the last time your muses interacted, they had a big fight. don't take up your entire reply talking about your muse only; talk about the other character. give the other writer something to smile about and comment on - "i loved what your muse noticed about mine! i loved their observations! they were so right!" make the other writer feel seen. this is a great way to show them you're reading their replies, loving their writing, and noticing little details about their muse.

roleplay blogs - if you post a character headcanon or a graphic and you don't want non rp blogs to reblog it, you can click the little gear at the top right of your post and change the "who can reblog?" from anyone to no one. they can still like it if they find the post, but now they can't flood your notifications with reblogs and cause a serious headache. hope that helps!

good idea: like other peoples' headcanons. enjoy the creative content your mutuals are making about their muse/s and show support and encouragement by interacting with their posts. this is such an awesome thing to do to ensure this hobby stays collaborative and creatively uplifting!

great idea: like other peoples' headcanons, then integrate those headcanons into your replies and threads with that person. did they say their muse is scared of spiders? have your muse mention that fear in your next reply to them. did they say their muse is allergic to raspberries? mention that. mention their eye color, their height, other details. add their headcanons to your replies. show them you see their posts and care about their muse/s beyond the basics. don't you love it when someone mentions something super specific about your muse? do the same for them

wanted to recommend a free app i saw on tiktok called Pocket Bard that's mainly used for adding ambient noise to TTRPGs... but would be phenomenal for setting the scene as you write replies on tumblr (or just for writing in general)! you can change the location (a city, a forest, a lair, etc.), the weather, and the sound effects around you. you can even change the level of intensity with a slider to make things more peaceful or more intense and dramatic.

just a heads up that if you have an adobe subscription, log into your account on a browser, go to "manage my account" > "account and security," and OPT OUT of the "content analysis" tab so they can't train their AI on your content.

also i use photoshop and i went in to preferences > product improvement and made sure this was turned off, too:

don't apologize for reblogging memes when you've got memes sitting in your inbox. sometimes you just need a refresh! sometimes the ones you've got in your inbox aren't sparking any joy or any ideas! it's okay to reblog a new one! there's no time limit on memes. there are no requirements. this isn't a job where you have to answer five memes before you reblog a new list - reblog what you like, have fun, and make sure to send your mutuals some memes, too!!

what does "reblog from source" mean? when people ask you to "reblog from source," they are asking you to reblog the post in question from 1) the original creator of the post or 2) the closest blog you can get to the source of the post. they are saying "please don't reblog the post from me. please find another blog in the reblog chain to reblog it from." they don't want to be your hub for all your content. they don't want to be used like a resource blog.

why can't i reblog the post directly from them? why do i have to go through all these loopholes to reblog a post? roleplay blogs in particular rely heavily on notifications / the activity page to keep track of replies and responses to their threads. if you reblog a ton of content from their blog, you crowd their notifications and make it hard to keep track of replies. it's polite to find a non-rp blog and reblog it from them, rather than crowd a roleplayer's activity page with your notifications.

sometimes there might be exceptions. sometimes you can't find a source. sometimes the original poster deleted. sometimes you're passing around an important psa and it's quicker to reblog directly from someone than go find the source. sometimes people don't mind if you reblog a ton from them. sometimes you make a mistake. it's okay. at the end of the day, just be courteous and civil. understand that for some people in the rpc, it's inconsiderate to flood their notifications with reblogs. you might get blocked. please read rules, respect boundaries, and if you can, find another source to reblog the post from. it's just polite.

aim for legibility and accessibility over being ostentatious and aesthetic with your blog text, especially when it comes to your rules, your pages, and other important parts of your blog that need to be read by all to create interactions. tiny, illegible fonts in a dark color on a dark background make it incredibly difficult to read, and may limit your appeal and interactivity. you may be turning away very talented, passionate writers looking to plot with you, simply because they can't read your text (even when zoomed in or squinting).

the easier your blog is to explore, read, and understand, the easier it is to gain new followers, new plots, and new dynamics.

i'm begging mutuals on roleplay blogs to start interacting. most people for what i have seen, are super comfortable with memes being the first shape of interaction, and the odd starter call too. like them, send various memes to get options.

this goes to single blogs but also multimuse blogs. i promise you, as someone with a lot of multimuse blogs, sometimes just giving a few names is enough for people to try on those muses.

interact with your mutuals. like their post, make jokes on their ooc post if that's how you feel more comfortable, share a pic or two, maybe discord. but for the gods sake, send memes, like starter calls, specially when it's encouraged.

i promise you people won't reject you.

if you have "original characters do not interact" or some form of anti-original character language in your rules... you are weak and will not survive the winter. you're missing out on unbelievably inventive characters created by your deeply passionate peers. you're missing out on so many types of interactions and unique perspectives not found in current mainstream media and the content it produces. there are so many talented people in the rpc with amazing original characters, and you're just writing them off for no reason. what a shame.

PSA: Tumblr/Wordpress is preparing to start selling our user data to Midjourney and OpenAI.

you have to MANUALLY opt out of it as well.

to opt out on desktop, click your blog ➡️ blog settings ➡️ scroll til you see visibility options and it’ll be the last option to toggle.

to opt out on mobile, click your blog ➡️ scroll then click visibility ➡️ toggle opt out option.

if you’ve already opted out of showing up in google searches, it’s preselected for you. if you don’t have the option available, update your app or close your browser/refresh a few times. important to note you also have to opt out for each blog you own separately, so if you’d like to prevent AI scraping your blog i’d really recommend taking the time to opt out.
